    The area called "Tondo" has a reputation. Good video m8.

    Who keeps telling travelers to stay in Malate? That's why people have a bad impression of Manila. It was the downtown area in the 1950s and before. Now, it's the old, crumbling part of the city. The new downtowns are Makati and Ortigas (starting in the 90s), and BGC (starting in the 2000s). Another area coming up is Bay City, where Mall of Asia is and all the big resorts and casinos. You picked the part of the city that stopped developing decades ago. It would be like going to L.A. and only seeing Compton

      @@STEADY599 You should check out Legaspi Village which has some nice tree lined streets, and is very close to Greenbelt Mall. Way nicer than Malate, with more than a few attractive and friendly ladies walking around. Cheers.

    • @minim6981
      @minim6981 5 лет назад +2

      @@matthewadams1874 nah, there's a lot outside the malls. Parks, markets, bars, restaurants. It's not inside the malls. And besides, malls like Greenbelt are really different from typical malls you find anywhere.This expat lives in Legazpi Village. Here's a video of him walking around his neighborhood
      ruclips.net/video/mZhzehsSiOA/видео.html
      The good thing is, a lot of expats live there, so nobody cares that you're a foreign. Unlike in Malate. And if the clean part of Makati is too boring for you, there's always the redlight district (P. Burgos)

    Really been getting my travel fix watching your videos, Steady Eddie. The section in this where you couldn't find a beer was amusing. Serious question though. Do you always try to get a room safe? If not, how do you secure your valuables? Travel lock? It's nice to be able to lock up your wallet and passport, and just take what you need for walking around.

    Great video and nice walkabout Ed! I lived in Manila for a year and whilst it may be a Super busy, crowded and polluted city it’s the people that really make it special, they’re almost always happy and smiling even if they don’t have much in the way of personal possessions. The poorer people seem to be happier than the rich!!

    Where in the heck are you walking? I was there about the same time that you were (I stayed about a month) and I was at a few different hotels about a 10 minute walk from the Robinson's Mall. I had no problem finding places to have a nice cold one in that area. Finding places that serve red horse was hard but not beer. One day I walked 12 miles up and down the Baywalk and there are tons of bars and cafes along the bay.

    Been watching your live streams during lockdowns and this video from Manila came into my recommended. Just had a watch and it reminds me of the first time I visited Manila. The city has always felt more Latin American than Asian to me on the times I have visited. It's probably due to the Americanism of the place following the Vietnam war and the general layout of the city. Malate is rough around the edges, but a great night out at a budget. Makati is more upmarket and more expensive though. I am pining for another Asian adventure as soon as we are allowed to travel again without the restrictions! I bet you are too!

    Stay or spend your time in BGC (Bonifacio Global City) instead. you won't regret going there, it's only a 20-30 min cab ride from where you are. All the Brit expats and travelers stay and hang out there now. There are loads of safe areas in Metro Manila nowadays, just get out of the old and rough districts (Malate, where you are) and into the newer and nicer parts of the metro. It's like travelling to London, only to stay in the most run down part of the city lol. Have fun!

I buy Smirnoff Mule at 7-11 and drink it at the store (tables outside). Not familiar with malate, but I do enjoy ermita (near US embassy, Rizal Park, and the aquarium). I live in Iloilo. In Manila, you can either travel cheap or lux and that will obviously affect your experience. You're obviously in older part of Metro Manila, Malate (Muh-lah-tei) and your journey looks as if you're traveling with a small budget. I suggest you become familiar with Uber/ Grab, and travel to areas in Makati, BGC, Rockwell, and Alabang etc. Travelling to old congested neighborhoods by foot is not gonna be a pleasurable time. Remember people that Metro Manila is a Megacity, so we're talking millions of people and different walks of life. We have 40 million more people than Thailand, but the one advantage is that you can talk to any of us and we will understand you well. An example would be when you asked the tuk tuk driver, "what are these cyclones?!?" The guy understood you completely, and responded in a sarcastic manner "Tricycle." And even repeated for you, but you failed to catch on. English is the lingua franca here, its 2019 there are plenty of sites and vlogs that will guide you to the right places in Manila. Manila is like Rio, walking through the old sections by yourself with no guide will not end well.

    • @minim6981
      @minim6981 5 лет назад +4

      I agree with all this except for the last part. Manila is nowhere close to being as dangerous as Rio. Manila isn't even as dangerous as American cities like St. Louis or New Orleans. Even the worst parts of Manila are relatively safe. Manila just seems more dangerous because it's poorer and the people look scarier compared to East Asians and other Southeast Asians.

    you unfortunately went to the slum area mate, Filipinos are naturally friendly and laughs at about everything, cheerful in most times, i reckon it's best to do some research and just like every foreign country that you go to, please walk with a mate for your own safety, it's much more fun as well, try enjoy the malls and just ask anyone, people are generally more than happy to help, you have to be quite attentive with the accent, Filipinos pronounce things in a different way hence a bit of a slight barrier there but once you get used to the accent Filipinos speak good English generally, stay safe, enjoy the place and make the most out of your stay, cheers!

    Good for you to walk around Malate area for the first few days, so you will know what is the difference between highend area and the residential area. Malate is residential area..but as for me..good to be around with these bunch of residences rather than in high end. Yes, most of them are very territorial, but if you show them that you're not an easy target as well as not an arrogant, then they will be your friend. They will tour you around for free. Yes, indeed..you need as well to mind your 3, 6 and 9 as always. But keeping it low profile....You can find a cold beer in any sari-sari store or 7-11...Good luck and just be yourself...Don't hesitate to ask anyone with care of course....😊

    Your serious apprehension about the safety aspects have been my number one concern in the Philippians...As far as I'm concerned all cities have there dangers but the stories out there about kidnapping, gangs and political unrest etc. The stares you were getting from the locals, (except the girls, they were smilin') sure didn't look that welcoming. I'm just glad your taken one for the team. Get your ass to a beach town, I'll hold off on the judgment. Thanks again Ed, I really appreciate it. That area, the run down buildings is similar to Phnom Penh.
    Also, the safety issue, don't worry. I've been living in Phnom Penh since 2004, back then the city was very different place to what it is today. Very little street lights, broken roads, and an uneasy edginess of the police. It took a brave individual to go down riverside alone, mostly we went in groups, but having said all that a bit of common sense and awareness goes a long way. Nowdays,with the advent of social media,it is easy to shame and condemn a place,so people are aware of that..so most places are generally safer. Easiest thing is don't make yourself a target, respect the locals and you will be fine.

    You may be lucky and not run into any danger but someone else may go there later and find trouble, I think it depends on being in the wrong place at the wrong time as well as how streetwise you are and how much common sense you have. I must say Ed; you picked a somewhat dodgy place to stay on your first visit to Manila, over there by the zoo. Years ago, I had a bunch of kids throw rocks at me as I crossed an open lot in attempt to get to that zoo on Quirino Ave. And, that first major street you traveled was Mabini, and at night, that particular area is beyond dodgy.
    Even though most people in the Philippines are very friendly, there are those who aren't, and I think the main problem is that the police don't place a premium on protecting visitors as does Thailand. The next time you stay in Malate, try the Tropicana Hotel off of Pedro Gil, a very nice hotel in a safe area of Manila, near Robinson's Place Mall.

    You should have headed up to Ermita for beer. A lot of Australian owned bars up there with cold beer. The Duck Inn, Southern Cross, G-Point(one of my favorites), Cowboy Grill. The problem you are having is the place you're staying at. You're all the way down by the Manila Zoo. I've passed by that Victoria Hotel many times on my way to the zoo. In this world of RUclips there’s a lot that can be known ahead of the visit. Micha and Justina are humble smart and young vloggers, You can tell by their vlogs that they do their research so that they are well informed. Interacting with locals anywhere but especially in the Phils whee the ppl are so welcoming will take you far in places and knowledge. Have an open mind and be accepting of other culture.

    from where you are staying, it's a few minutes walk away from Roxas boulevard, (pronounced rohas) boulevard where you can find manila bay. it's a lovely place to go for a morning walk. i say morning because it is nearing summer season and humidity strikes just before noon.
    it also helps to ask around since Filipinos have a pretty good grasp of the English language but lose that British accent a little and make it more neutral.
    when looking for people to ask, best to ask millennials (someone who is around the 20s to 30s age range) they have the best command of the English language by age demographics. our countri's no call center capital of the world for Americans for nothing.
    be a smart traveler (research, ask your hotel). it's always good to be adventurous but you also need to do your homework.
    im pretty sure, you will enjoy manila if you do the things i mentioned.
    go to Harbour Square near ccp (cultural center of the Philippines. excellent view of the Manila bay.
    other manila places to visit are intramuros, luneta, national museum and rizal park. these places are adjacent to each other and they're free except for the museum which has a minimal fee. the best time to go there. Sunday morning. wear light clothes and bring comfortable walking shoes.
    malls to try near your hotel.
    avoid taxis and download grab. it's the southeast asian version of uber.
    1. Robinsons place manila
    2. SM mall of Asia specially on evenings (its a very big mall but to save you time, ask for where is san miguel by the bay.
