- Melissa stays longer in Louisiana. I get the shelves put up and more shelves started. The calf gets sick. Cutting more firewood. The cold weather sets in.
The things you do in a day Joe! Please let Melissa know that prayers are going up for her Mother each day and for a safe return home. Awesome video Joe, Blessings! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯
When you homestead, there's never a dull moment. Hope everyone gets better. All the best to you and yours over the holidays.
Take care, Melissa. I wish and praying 🙏🏼 for your mother health. Love watching 👀 video.🐕🐕🐕🐈🐈🐄🐄🐄
Joe I enjoy watching from Arkansas, I cattle ranch if I could give a little advice put hay in hay ring same way you stack it.When you place on its side water will soak all the way through the bale. If you stack it the way it comes out of baler it is layered not to absorb water. I appreciate the video’s very much.
Thanks for sharing with us today Joe. You have your hands full right now and we pray that things improve for you all, your Mother-in-laws health and your calf getting better. Stay safe and hang in there. You and Melissa have a Merry Christmas . Fred.
joe and melissa have a nice Christmas 🎄 and a happy new year, my friends ❤.
Dang, sure sorry to hear Mellisas mom is not doing good. I hope the calf is doing much better by now. I recently identified a tree in my back acerage as a western red cedar. But I double checked the next day and nope. I was bummed. Your shelves look awesome! You are a wonderful caretaker of your homestead and your people. Im sending you all good wishes.
The colder it is the more hay they will go through.
When you started the video talking about the temp changes, I figured that's why the calf got sick. Animals can get sick with large temp changes like that. Glad your vet was able to come out.
Positive healing waves for Melissa’s Mom and the Calf.
Hey Joe.I wanted to wish you and your family merry Christmas love watching your videos take care and stay warm
That was so funny! When you were talking about milking the cow and the milking schedule and the dry out and said, ‘I just go out there, give her the spoon in the morning and give her the spoon at night, rub, scratch under the little thingy and I’m done. 😂
Welcome to farming and ranching , it never seems to be a calm in the storm .😊
Thank you Joe! Have a Merry Christmas! Always enjoy your channel!
Joe the cedar shelves are beautiful.
Merry Christmas to you and Melissa!
Nice one. A very enjoyable video to watch.. 🙂👍
Got a lot on yoyre plate Joe, wow! Take care friend
Joe the shelf looks so nice.🎄
The one cow was doing the happy dance!!!
In our house, I used doorstops that fit on the hinge pins. They adjust to allow the door to open just as wide as you need it to. I placed them on the top hinges to keep them out of the way of Linda's wheelchair. They might work for you too. They're available at most hardware stores, I think. Lowe's had them in white and brass. The white ones could even be painted, I would think.
Merry Christmas!!
Good grief, Joe! You sure do have a whole lot of nothing much going on! Thoughts and prayers for Melissa's mom.
Great video man
Thanks for sharing
WHAT? THE CALF GOT SICK? O NO❣️💓
What you need is a hay feeder that's about a foot or 2xoff the ground
I've never tried Jack's pizza. I usually get the Motor City pizza. I will lift the pizza out of its baking tray and pour the missing toppings back on the pizza and I add 2 tbsp of vegetable oil to the baking tray and put the pizza back in the tray and then I bake the pizza. I really like the crispy fried crust.
Waving a hand from Texas
Happy Holidays Joe and Family, be safe!
Smart move do it before bad weather or it will get you.😊
There should be a picture of Joe next to the definition of "industrious" in the dictionary! That kind of cold would be a definite "no go" for me. 😮
you convinced me that a wood boiler it,s not made for me 😢 .
Hey Joe when you mentioned needing a skid steer with no cab to clean the old cow bedding and manure outta there shelter come spring I’m curious why you don’t use your telehandler?? I’m not sure if your machine has a quick attach on it or not but I’ve seen farms use telehandlers for many different jobs like facing feed piles, loading mixer carts and plowing snow on dairy farms. I live near Green Bay and haul heavy equipment for a living and it’s pretty common for customers to rent telehandlers with multiple attachments like 48” forks, 96” forks , lifting hook, and different size buckets. If your machine runs and operates maybe try to find a bucket for it🤷🏼♂️👍🏼.
Looks so organized in the work room
the shelves look great,
Hey Joe get a bucket for the telehandler
Woohoo!
Look in clear lake, Minnesota, there. It was a guy that used to make picnic tables with that red cedar
You can not be miserly with the hay in winter. It keeps them warm and healthy, plus the cow needs extra feed when pregnant,, you eat a good meal every meal time
Joe, I’m so jealous. I have a propane heater heater in my garage/shop and it’s broke with no hope of fixing it.
Merry Christmas everyone
At about 6;30 in the video when you let the cattle out by your little hay pile, I noticed the 2nd animal 'dancing' a bit. Might've had cold feet or didn't like the snow. OTOH dancing cattle can be a sign of stray voltage going to 'earth' and animals will easily feel this in their feet. Your power utility will be happy to help you check for stray voltage and cure any issue if found.
Every time I bring them something like that or open a new pasture they give me a happy dance. That was a happy cow, not one that was in distress.
Cold sets in. Was it a surprise..... Suppose people make their choices to put up with snow.....
one of those skid steers you stand on the back might be what you need
Put a ball in the cows water trough it will keep it from freezing. A ball big enough for me wind to move the ball around
Peace
Work is never done
Nothing will tie you down to one location, like livestock.
They do have heated water hoses on Walmart apps and probably Amazon- Under RV water hose
or he could just wrap the hose
Well I know they have snow shovels for your ATVs do they have anything that would possibly work that you could get an attachment to your ATV to scoop it out as it’s much smaller and shorter? I know they have rakes for the back of the ATV that you could maybe just rake it out and pick it up with your regular tractor also a chain drag if you want to break up the poop in the area where the cows poop so it dries out faster.
Thought you were drying her off ?
Yup you chose a smart Women!! she sees weather stays where it is best , Melissa please have few shrimp for Me,,
They are both moving south next summer to retire...
@@mikefoss4962says no one. He tells us all the time Melissa doesn’t like that hot weather.
Did she take the dogs with her haven't seen them
Joe what temperature did it drop to in the area of the chicken coop where the calf is with the cold snap?
5 degrees.
It’s too bad you can’t build an online to cover the Haybale but also make it tall enough that you can squeeze in the Haybale with your tractor like if you need it 10 feet high or whatever. I just think it would be a kit better for the cows Cannot have wet gross hay.
Hopefully your keys don’t fall behind the washer haha
Wouldn't it make more sense to use the pallette forks to stab the frozen blocks of hays\straw and lift them? Saves the time and muscles, wouldn't it...?
Hi Ann. Nice hearing from you. I do not exactly know what you are saying? I used the bale spears on the tractor to do it? The bales being frozen is no different than if it is 80 degrees out, they are not any harder being below zero.
I just cut down a bunch of red cedar but I live in Virginia
I imagine cutting through frozen ash wood will dull a blade real fast.
Red Cedar? They consider that an invasive species here in OK. they get ground up into mulch.
How much does one of those round bails weigh?
What is one of the best headlamp do you use ?
Fighting girl was what we bought and have but the last time we bought them was in 2021. We are still using them. I just looked them up, ours are the 12,000 lumen and they are no longer available.
To bad your 12 hours away from Missouri. I have 80 acres of western red cedars, you could come get a trailer load.
Are they aromatic cedar? I would make that drive.
Please email me. homeandcabininc@outlook.com
I just looked it up and I believe western red is the aromatic. PLEASE email me.
11 hours for me to get to St Louis. I would gladly make the drive.
Why dont you rig up the Tele Handler with a bucket and some forks and use that ??
Joe......dude buy small round rolls cause they gonna waste half of it......2 cows all ya feeding get small rounds......
Oh brrrrrrrrr 😲
Take a little bite in your hand after giving it milk right wayit will suck it out of your hand
Are you going to tear down that old green trailer? Sure would give you more room to push snow. It’s kinda of an eye sore.
That's good for storage !
Joe is so meticulous about how things look. I’m surprised that trailer is still there too.
Yeah definitely an eyesore
Joe does everything buy himself ,if it bothers you that much why don’t you volunteer your service.
In general, Joe has said he will have the trailer hauled away…but it’s not high priority with the $ cost involved.
Aren't your animals as cold as you are? they also feel the cold, and their ''stalls'' are really not isolated at all, not even closed, so i can just imagine how hard it is for them. Maybe it is time to think about them as beings that suffer the same as we do... little compassion, thought and love usually does the trick.
No. Animals live outside. A shed is all they need.
@@claire_A-T yeah??? then why do they get sick? I think they deserve a warmer place to be in, no drafts and better protected. I have seen many, MANY videos were the farmers do offer more protection and heat to their animals. They live outside, in conditions that do not harm them at all.
Oh please. You obviously know nothing about cows. Please do some research before commenting. The worse thing I could do for those cows is to have a heated shelter for them. That would be a quick way to see how fast our cows can die. Cows are not dogs.
We are dairy farmers from western New York we put heat lamps on young calves that can't produce enough heat on there own especially in that cold weather you might take it easy on your comments try to be a bit more mellow it just a person's opinion. @@NorthernSeclusion
@@NorthernSeclusion of course. Dogs are dogs and cows are cows. And then there are farmers and farmers, and very different ideas of how to keep their cows healthy and happy. Here in Normandie, we provide the cows enclosed stalls to sleep at night or take warmer refuge on very cold, rainy or snowy days, lots and lots of good hay and feed during the day and ice free water And our cows do not get pneumonia or any respiratory diseases because of the harsh weather. They are happy cows and we are happy farmers with loving and respectful behaviour toward our very expensive and important cows. (and chicken, rabbits, ducks, goats and pigs also) Guess it all depends on how you perceive each one of the animals you have under your care!!!

Where r the dogs, u usually have At least one out and about with u
In the winter they stay inside unless they are doing their business. You do not see them much during the cold months. Sometimes I post pictures on the community facebook page but not much in the videos.
Joe, you couldn't do what we do. We're sitting here watching someone else work. You couldn't watch one of your own videos just for entertainments sake. I'm surprised you have the patience to edit.
Your calf is sick because you leave him out in the below freezing temperatures. Why don’t you make a stall inside one of your buildings and bring him inside where it is warm until he is big enough to handle the cold weather. You will lose that poor animal if you don’t take care of his illness. I cant understand why you took a small calf away from its mother and now you have to bottle feed it. Take care of your animals.
You are 100% wrong. PLEASE do some research before posting stupid comments. You have no idea what you are talking about.
I hope you will take better care of that poor calf….not sure I will continue to follow you as it’s hard to watch your callous treatment of the poor animal…stuck outside in those frigid temps, all alone, without even another animal to help him stay warm. I am disappointed as up till now I have enjoyed your channel content. But there is enough cruelty in this world already…
Wow !
Teresa, you seems to have missed key points in your comment. Joe built a shelter for the cows with a roof for them to get out of the cold weather. Also the baby calf is in the chicken coup. When the baby calf got sick Joe called out a vet. Now what part of this is animal cruelty? I think you over-reacted.
The calf is in a shelter out of the elements & wind. And the calf has food & water and has an insulated jacket. Joe has called a vet who has given antibiotics. He can’t put it in with the other cattle because they might get sick.
