In America I don't understand why people degrade Passats so much. In Europe such as in the Balkans, or Poland Passats are literally worshipped vehicles, and people absolutely love them.
Because mechanics in the us don’t like working on them which makes them money pits. Parts are also expensive/unavailable over here. Americans like Japanese stuff.

The transmission issue you have might be the TCM that is sitting on the passenger floor, when i got my Audi A6 c5, it had water coming in from the front windshield and I had to replace the TCM and seal the crack from the windshield, this happens to Audi A6, Allroad and Passat all same model.
In the Balkans this car is an absolute legend. It will run through mud, snow, apocalyptic conditions even broken in half. You can use it as a tractor or go shopping to the local market. You can race it and blow your turbo, it's cheap, who cares.

You can add a 6 disc cd changer in that compartment on the left in the trunk. It just has one plug. I know cd's are kinda old but its still a cool option. I put one in my 03 Jetta.
Passenger side grit is metal in the paint from the brakes being bad. Use a iron remover and then clay bar and that should clean it up. The transmission is a ZF 5HP and are known to have issues. Like stated in another comment check the tcm for water damage and pull that cel code, it may be a torque converter issue.
Keep that Auto-trans alive and install a TransGo shift kit. $60/ 2 hours to install and get another 100K out of that ZF09 tranny. It saved my Passat from the junk yard.
I ran a 2003 Passat 4 Motion diesel that was mapped to 180 bhp for 2 years 40,000 miles in the UK. Was a brilliant reliable car it averaged 40 mpg and we also have a 1.9tdi estate which we bought in 2004 that now has 194,000 miles.,only replaced the clutch at 185,000 miles and still the original exhaust.
I have a 2004 Passat 1.8T 4Motion 5 speed manual with only 116k miles. I love my car. Bought it as a non runner for $750 bucks with 110K miles at the time in 2019. The former guy ruined the ECU and didn't know you had to do an immobilizer defeat with a used ECU so couldn't get it running. Just put a used ac compressor in it a few days ago and it works great. The original owner was a complete low IQ prime ape that never knew what he had or how to take care of or appreciate it. Now I'm trying to repair all his failings including all the typical B5.5 gremlins.
Maybe the last owners did but I don’t think so since they just traded it in and the dealership didn’t even touch the car since I asked the buy it the day it came in😂

The leaks are never just leaks on these. Change the PCV valve, clean crankcase breather hose, both valve cover breather hoses (replace front long one), and the f shaped hose that connects them to the pcv. High pressure causes the leaks. After that you can do valve cover gaskets, cam shaft seals, cam shaft cap seals and cam tensioner gaskets. lol.
Get a good iron remover for the grit on the paint and build up on the wheels, Chemical Guys has one that'll fit into your growing collection of products. Also don't use acidic cleaner on the painted wheels, it'll be hard on the paint and your skin and nostrils. Clay bar works wonders on baked on brake dust. Congrats on another great VW find. 👍
Very nice car. This passage have two pockets right and left in the trunk. Look better there. You love this care they have better ride than golfs. This generation have Audis A4 platform and the 4 motion is actually Quattro.

If the maintenance is in time then the reliable is good. If the check light appears and we drive with out to check it because the car run ok then we don’t wait the reliability to be as it should. Yes the Japan car had better readability but the ride is poor. This is a fact. Nowadays all car are good and the most problems aren’t actually problems but malfunction infotainment and connections issue. That’s my opinion.

Congrats on the Passat!!! I have 2 w8s and they are the best snow drifting in the winter will be awesome. On my w8 wagon when I first got it I was having range sensor issues causing the tcm to not know what gear the car was in I would possibly look into that.
I had 2 of these. Exactly same spec Great winter car for me in Canada but they have a tcm issue on passenger side where water gets in and fries the computer and no matter what you did for valve cover gaskets the thing was always leaking oil from somewhere
Maybe iron fall out will help that passenger door it will be metal from the brakes flaking off and sticking to the car same as why the wheel didn't fully clean up you'll need a strong alloy cleaner and good brush for that it will come clean again
30v are notorious for leaking valve cover gaskets.. I had 3 b5 a4 same engine with manual.. great engine mine had 357k miles still ran like champ. Just valve cover gaskets ehhh

I’m telling you, cam chain tensioner gaskets, blah blah blah, or else you’ll constantly be chasing oil burning/leaks. It’s really hard to see in there. I had that issue mine was a selenoid every time I would reset the check engine it will work fine until the selenoid acted up
That color on the Passat is really similar to tempest blue on the mk6 Jetta
