It's astounding that any economist would think consumer spending is the core sign of a strong economy. It's a strong sign of free credit as evidenced by the REPO bailouts
Right now consumers can't even spend anything, even those who are liquid. So non-essentual businesses like car dealerships and electronic shops are going to suffer hard. Which will cause them to lay off workers. And no one knows when it's safe to go outside again. Could be as late as June. The USA and the EU are really fucked.

Car companies have almost all of their new cars on notes and have to keep inventory turned over to make profits. Situations like this they are literally losing money by the day, with no end in sight. Terrible times for debt heavy companies, as they are getting hit the hardest, the same with airlines.

I am so frustrated by the fact that even though the writing is so clearly written on the wall for our impending economic doom, people continue to be in denial. I tried sharing some information with people I am close to and many still dont want to hear it. They told me they are stressed out enough as it is with the coronavirus and dont want to worry about something else too! Its crazy that people would rather put themselves in harms way than swallow a couple truth pills and take decisive action to help secure their future. These are going to be very interesting times ahead of us.

Thank you Peter for giving us our daily dose of economic reality. I am so frustrated by the fact that even though the writing is so clearly written on the wall for our impending economic doom, people continue to be in denial. I tried sharing some information with people I am close to and many still dont want to hear it. They told me they are stressed out enough as it is with the coronavirus and dont want to worry about something else too! Its crazy that people would rather put themselves in harms way than swallow a couple truth pills and take decisive action to help secure their future. These are going to be very interesting times ahead of us.

It requires thinking to understand these concepts. Unfortunately, the majority live their lives in illusion 😔 or delusion. I know, because this is the myth that our parents give us. Because their parents gave it to them, from generations 🙄 to the next. It takes a hell of a lot of emotional energy to escape this trap. It's no one's fault. It's just life! 😢

I've followed you since may of last year and have been educating myself. I knew the crash was in when during the December repo market, yet I am paycheck to paycheck. It hurts man.
