For almost their first four decades of coexistence, Major League Baseball’s two New York clubs were like distant relatives, inextricably tethered to one another yet entirely uninvolved in each other’s lives. Even though both teams enjoyed their time in the postseason spotlight during the second half of the 20th century, they never once crossed paths in the playoffs.
At long last, though, in the autumn of 2000, the two crosstown rivals finally met on baseball’s biggest stage, squaring off in an unforgettable showdown that not only revived one of baseball’s most delightful and long-dormant institutions - the Subway Series - but also represented a pivotal moment in the histories of both New York franchises.
