Believe me, it's not envy, but I just love that someone is living the life that I would like to have lived. Being disabled I get great joy watching everything about narrowboats. On warmer days I often ride my mobility scooter down to Little Venice which is five minutes from where I live. A flask, sandwich and a book, and watching the boats head on down to Regents Park and Camden Lock, lovely.
Such wise words…..Just do it! Exactly what we did. We didn’t hire like everyone said we should, we just bought a boat and did it! And not looked back. Absolutely loved the story of making instruments in Africa 😊
My partner and I chose the narrow boat life for the freedom and the more relaxed lifestyle, we have been mortgage free from the age of 38, now 44, and both earn a full time wage with no mortgage or rent to pay and minimal bills, we think we have definitely chosen the right lifestyle for us!! It all depends what you can live with. We’ve been on our 26 foot narrow boat for 6 years now.
My partners boat is 26 foot, he is full time live aboard, I go visit once a month, have to say its a bit cramped for me, couldnt do that for long, keep telling him he needs a bigger boat :)
Some times on a binge I'll skip the Q&A's to see more of the scenery and pubs. But man this was the best video in the series so far! Very cool story and insights. I'm leaving what I and others thought was my dream job and totally understand that trapped feeling. Was a fine dining chef tired of looking at the same 4 stainless steel walls 90hrs a week. Now I'm joining the maritime union!
Having been a continual cruiser for many years I can honestly say that it has been the best years of my life. It’s been hard work on occasion but the experience has outweighed any negativity & the thought of moving back to a house isn’t in my future. Love your enthusiasm & will raise a glass (rum of course) in recognition of a kindred soul 🦆💕
Heidi - greetings from Poland Now I know. Thanks so much for telling your story. A very strong lady that decided to follow her dreams and has never regretted it. Fabulous!
I love how you answered these questions❤️. Much more fun than just sitting there. Cool graphics too. I always enjoy your vlogs so much Heidi❤️. I am so happy you are living your best life, the joy comes through on your vlogs🥰.

Heidi, great finding out some of your history and how you came to be living on a narrowboat. It's amazing that you're living your dream life now, and how many people can say that? Keep living your dream.
I loved your story, you are a very interesting person. I have lived in boats on the sea and on the canals of Europe for the last 34 years and also in caravans and campervans and I have met some really special and interesting people along the way, I am without a boat now but live in a campervan still. I am really enjoying your videos and your fabulous music. Xx

I find it amazing that people look at narrow boaters, van lifers and various other alternative lifestyles to be down on their luck. We don't all want the huge house, 2.4 kids and white picket fence...
Lovely to hear your story. We always dreamed of living on a boat, but the time was never right. In the end we realised we weren’t getting any younger so sold our house and had a boat built. 👍We’ve been on the water for 18 months now and absolutely love it ❤️

With making it easy for Jackie to find you, use what3words.
Thank you so much for your RUclips videos! Watching your videos make for my life HAPPY! I really appreciate your sense of humor and positive energy. Hello from Portland, Oregon, USA!
Thank you, Heidi for an amazing episode. What an interesting life you have led. I have followed you from the beginning, and as we live in Chester, have walked many of the canals you have been on (we are committed towpath walkers, and love to be beside a canal!) A few weeks back, when walking through Middlewich, we saw The Rum Wench, but sadly, no sign of you! I was excited as it is the first narrowboat I follow on RUclips that I have seen. I will continue to keep a look out! Thank you for your vlogs, you bring a great sense of fun to youtube! Love from Maggie xxx

Like me you had boating experience before buying your first narrowboat. From your inflatable tender to the cruiser you could sleep overnight on then 43ft narrow boat. For me it was kayaking and dinghy sailing before jumping into an empty 56ft shell.
I would say by now..I'm hooked! I don't care for stuffy or uppity folks..you are neither.. It's easy to see you are living your life to the fullest with happiness and joy 😊 Very refreshing and quite fun to come along..Thank you Heidi 😊
The first comment I have made to you I believe. Probably because this latest vlog is so good and so interesting I have no choice but to say so. You are a great personality and I am keen to ensure I watch you often. Your partner seems a bit shy but never mind. Your boat is seriously well kept and unusual. All the best , Anthony . X

Thanks Kaz, it takes so long to write the music then go through all the process with iTunes, RUclips etc but I’ll keep trying to add more when I get chance 😃❤️🏴☠️
Great way to answer questions. Well done. I don’t drink but I think if I was lucky enough to live on a Narrowboat I’d keep a bottle of rum incase I passed you by. Now I better get to bed. Helping my sister haul her two horses in the morning.
That was fantastic Heidi. I messed that macci turn up. Smashed into the wall. Totally blobbed it. That's a hard turn. Well done. See you on cut Mrs pirate ladies...
Was nice of you to tell us your story and how you deal with things, what's puddings story. I've really enjoyed your vlogs and look forward to watching them. I don't know why people think only down on your luck types would boat. No different to living in a caravan. Be safe hugs to pudding, you and Jackie
Great video, Heidi. I've had issues with that woman too. She banged on my window with a big stick, a minute to 20.00hrs demanding I turn my engine off. The next day she had a go at Lesley, who had had a bit to drink and she told her what she thought of her 🤭. A shame she cannot embrace the lovely location and boat life that comes and goes. She told me CRT will be putting a no mooring sign up opposite her house 😂 That was over 2yrs ago. Can't believe she used to be a boater. 😲
Another great video, very interesting! We must seem like a bunch of nosy viewers with all of the questions you've gotten. Thanks for sharing some of your history with us Heidi.
What a wonderful story about your life ,i wish i had the bottle to do it , but old age, I'm 67 tomorrow, and a knackered back has put paid to that , you go girl, love your down to earth videos keep them coming , 😁❤👍
I can’t get anywhere at the moment …. Everywhere is shut 😂 Poolstock locks shut, so can’t even get on the L&L the boat lift is shut, the Macc is shut, Cheshire locks are shut, Wigan flight is shut, the Rochdale is shut, Huddersfield Narrow shut 😫😫 it’s a bleeding nightmare 😂😂
Unfortunately this narrowboat life is not possible where I live in Texas so I really enjoy the narrowboaters I've been following for a few years. I'm glad I found your RUclips channel. Just found Rhapsody in Blue also. I've been following Country house Gent and Cruising the Cut.
Very informative, thought about getting a narrow boat years ago before we relocated to the philippines. Lovely to see the canals and english countryside again though. Thanks for your videos. GBU
Well done you! Following what you want to do is great! It's nice to have a financial backup as you get older though...as I am just realising as I'm getting nearing retirement age!
Wow that was informative! Those questions were the ones many of us have wondered about I myself figured "It's none of your ^%$#@ bizzness!" But then you asked for questions! Great stuff. I'm really looking forward to v2. Where did you live near the Rochdale? 'Ebden Bridge?
So cool to learn about you!! What did you teach? Music per chance? Just making that leap bc of the “found” instruments. What an amazing thing to do. Thank you for sharing all of that. You don’t look old enough to have taught for that long and done so much! Must be the dewy English air. Good for you!
Great vlog and very interesting. I am loving getting rid of everything. We have realised we still need to get rid of more though so now being ruthless when fetching boxes.
Yeah it’s hard work haha I have 2 drawers for clothes so when I buy something new I have to throw something away 😂😂 I do have loads and loads of jumpers and coats hanging up though …
I am in the process of hoping to live on a narrowboat , the only thing I can think of as a negative is , what am I going to do when I’m older , where am I going to live if I sell my home . Should I worry about this , will I be housed by the council if I ever need to be as I couldn’t afford to buy again or privately rent. Do people always end up in a house eventually. I’m 59
Ahoy Helen, I think I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it as I’m enjoying myself too much at the moment 😂😂 i do know lots of boaters who live aboard full time that are in 70s but a lot will head to marinas for winter … if you can afford to keep your house then do so for peace of mind 😃
Another great video, still frozen here. Looking forward to warm weather, a garden and swimming. Keep them coming I always enjoy your videos. Your lifestyle choice is an amazing choice. I moved to the country long ago for a reason just like that. Pay was a lot lower but living in the country is amazing and harder. Would never go back to the city. I love your choice if I was younger I would consider it. Alas I hope just to rent a narrowboat one summer.
Hello there Heidi ,just finished clearing the snow from the drive way and supper is almost ready .I have just 3 questions for you . (1) how come your fantastic sense of humour is always so full of fun and upbeat ? (2)How come you always look so beautiful ,lovely complexion when you're outside so much or maybe that's your secret .? (3)Can you tell the strength of Rum just by tasting it.? and this question is entirely optional (4) Will you Marry me *grin* I'll be back in a bitXX
Love the vlog and the very diplomatic way you answered the question about boaters ‘being down on their luck!!!!! ‘ like you we chose it for the much better lifestyle, so much less stress than when we were working. Our health has much improved since living on our boat. And as for the old cantankerous female….I can’t call her a lady, I would have moored where you stopped, you were knackered and not doing anything wrong! Thank you for being so down to earth and entertaining x
Wow thats been fantastic..you visited my country S.A! I think, yes, as much as there are times that its tough and people who complain, you have a life that is simple, less complicated and fulfilling. Would love to give it a bash but my wife keeps laughing. Maybe we will do it for a holliday. Looking foward to next week. The questions Nd answers have been awesom👍
Yes I love your country … I was in Durban, Pretoria, Ladysmith, Maritizberg and Lasuto … kwazulu natal region and the gorgeous Drakenburg (excuse spellings as on my phone) Come for a holiday - try before you buy 🏴☠️😃
@@TheNarrowboatPirate aahh Natal is lush and almost tropical climate. We stayed in Cape Town but we have immigrated to the UK now. My wife, came over in Dec. 2020 (she has British citizenship). I arrived in Nov. 2021. We stay in Scotland and loving my new home. Will definatly look at a longboat holliday.
I sometimes wonder what is wrong with people , that woman was like those who buy a house next to a church then complain about the bells ringing ! ( If any one is wondering you are not supposed to run your engine or a generator if moored near housing, between the hours of 8pm and 8am according to the CRT website) Nice to hear how you came to live on a boat too , Cheers ! Hic !
Hey Heidi. Fellow boater here and I’m on a 56ft tug style narrowboat and it’s my full time home. I do enjoy your vlogs for sure. I have a very rude sense of humour and you proper make me belly laugh. Your own music reminds me of some classic 80’s stuff from the likes of Visage and it’s great! I have to say you were very polite with that total bell end of a woman……I wouldn’t have been for sure! I’m surprised there hasn’t been a load of boaters moored up there, just because we can. As you quite rightly said, the canals have been there 200 years and you bought a house which backs onto a navigable and active canal. As long as the 8am-8pm rule is adhered to, she can do one! 😁
@@metalsnapper6728 aww thanks for your lovely comment and I’m glad you are enjoying them …. It was only 3.30pm and that woman obviously isn’t getting much 😂😂 I found a better mooring in the end anyway, so she can do one 😂 miserable bugger 😂🏴☠️
your lucky to be able to boat year long. iam north of peterborough ontario canada on the trent system lots of ice and minus 10 to minus 20C + love the canal boat trips
Re: operating costs - My rate for mandatory health insurance (US) as someone currently unemployed is $6000 a year. (oof) That's JUST health. Not mortgage, fuel, electric, etc. etc. which are all added expenses.
Great vlog as usual, so very informative and an insight into your life, thank you for your great vlogs, me and missus love em, love to you and Jackie xx
0 seconds ago I am catching up on some of your past videos and you answered loads of my questions on here. You have made the choices which give you the lifestyle you want. I seems that teaching has lost out this time. You sound like a fun teacher to have had, but if the 'system' didn't suit you, then best to be out of it. If ever you need cash, you can go back for a while.
Ahoy guys, I’ve done all the Birmingham ones but didn’t go to droitwich as there is a very low bridge there and I would have to take all the shite off my roof 😂😂
Loved this...really interesting...I'm now at the stage where I want to work from my boat and get that complete freedom, instead of not being able to go too far from my job...I work in schools too, so obviously can't bring my work home...imagine the risk assessments haha 😄 Cheers 🍻
You were very restrained with the Hyacinth woman. Living near a canal not wanting to hear boats?
I'm binge watching. Bloody lovin it!

Aww thanks again for your lovely comment 😄🏴☠️
That was fantastic Heidi. I messed that macci turn up. Smashed into the wall. Totally blobbed it. That's a hard turn. Well done. See you on cut Mrs pirate ladies...
Hahaa it was a fluke 😂 see you soon Rippers 😂🏴☠️
everything you own is on the boat? That's absolutely brilliant. Hopefully some day I can de-clutter to that degree
At least I can find everything 😂😂
Just discovered your channel recently Heidi, and I’m hooked!
Love the sound of that old Lister engine thumping away.
Aww thanks for watching Jon and taking the time to leave me such a lovely comment 😄🏴☠️
Hello from New Jersey, USA. Enjoyed the video very much. Looking forward to the next one. Be well and stay safe.
Thank you Mark 😃🏴☠️
@@TheNarrowboatPirate You're welcome 😊
Was nice of you to tell us your story and how you deal with things, what's puddings story. I've really enjoyed your vlogs and look forward to watching them. I don't know why people think only down on your luck types would boat. No different to living in a caravan. Be safe hugs to pudding, you and Jackie
Thank you 😃🏴☠️
Gutting you have to deal with people kicking off but it was good to see and hear what silly issues people might have with you pulling up
Great video, Heidi. 😲
She really is a misery … well I found a much better spot in the end anyway 😃🏴☠️
A great question and answers, Really look forward to your videos,
Keep on cruising And don’t run out of rum 👍
Thanks John 😃🏴☠️
Hehe ... I already watched this one and you really didn't know what you were letting yourself into! Good fun and informative x
Thank you 😃🏴☠️
Another great video, very interesting! We must seem like a bunch of nosy viewers with all of the questions you've gotten. Thanks for sharing some of your history with us Heidi.
I’m glad you enjoyed it, thank you for your support 😃🏴☠️
Brilliant content , young lady . Really enjoyed your narrating style , keep it up ..
Thanks very much Vic 😃🏴☠️
Brilliant video style for a Q&A session really loved it - all the best from Thailand 👍
Thank you 😃🏴☠️ I love Thailand 😂
What a wonderful story about your life ,i wish i had the bottle to do it , but old age, I'm 67 tomorrow, and a knackered back has put paid to that , you go girl, love your down to earth videos keep them coming , 😁❤👍
Thanks Phillip 😃🏴☠️ Happy Birthday for tomorrow too 😃🏴☠️🎉🎉🥃🥃🍺🍺
you must come up to the Lancaster canal and down to Glasson Basin....
Aww thanks for watching 😄🏴☠️
Very informative, thought about getting a narrow boat years ago before we relocated to the philippines. Lovely to see the canals and english countryside again though. Thanks for your videos. GBU
Thanks for watching 😃🏴☠️
I would like to know about the little oil lamp just behind your left shoulder, I am a big fan of oil lamps.
That is a French one .. I’ll try to a close up in a future video 😃🏴☠️
Well done you! Following what you want to do is great! It's nice to have a financial backup as you get older though...as I am just realising as I'm getting nearing retirement age!
Life’s short 😂🏴☠️
Wow that was informative! Those questions were the ones many of us have wondered about I myself figured "It's none of your ^%$#@ bizzness!" But then you asked for questions! Great stuff. I'm really looking forward to v2. Where did you live near the Rochdale? 'Ebden Bridge?
Thanks Mike, just a few miles away in Todmorden 😃🏴☠️
So cool to learn about you!! What did you teach? Music per chance? Just making that leap bc of the “found” instruments. What an amazing thing to do. Thank you for sharing all of that. You don’t look old enough to have taught for that long and done so much! Must be the dewy English air. Good for you!
Thanks Jayne, I used to teach creative music and music technology 😃🏴☠️
Great vlog and very interesting. I am loving getting rid of everything. We have realised we still need to get rid of more though so now being ruthless when fetching boxes.
Yeah it’s hard work haha I have 2 drawers for clothes so when I buy something new I have to throw something away 😂😂 I do have loads and loads of jumpers and coats hanging up though …
@@TheNarrowboatPirate I think it’s the clothes I’ve struggled with the most I used to have 3 wardrobes now about 10 hangers lol
Great vlog great answers as it should be have a great week
Thanks very much Caroline 😃🏴☠️
@@TheNarrowboatPirate , thank you for the reply, yes I think I’ll probably do the same...live for the moment. ❤️
That was very interesting - especially hearing about your life. I look forward to the next one.
Thanks Ruth 😄🏴☠️
Another great video, still frozen here. Looking forward to warm weather, a garden and swimming. Keep them coming I always enjoy your videos. Your lifestyle choice is an amazing choice. I moved to the country long ago for a reason just like that. Pay was a lot lower but living in the country is amazing and harder. Would never go back to the city. I love your choice if I was younger I would consider it. Alas I hope just to rent a narrowboat one summer.
Thank you Richard 😄 i hope it warms up soon 😄🏴☠️
@@TheNarrowboatPirate Another month at least to warm up.
Hi Heidi. You did an AWESOME job with this video! I'm looking forward to part 2.
Thanks so much Justine, that really means a lot 😄🏴☠️
Hello there Heidi ,just finished clearing the snow from the drive way and supper is almost ready .I have just 3 questions for you .
(1) how come your fantastic sense of humour is always so full of fun and upbeat ?
(2)How come you always look so beautiful ,lovely complexion when you're outside so much or maybe that's your secret .?
(3)Can you tell the strength of Rum just by tasting it.?
and this question is entirely optional
(4) Will you Marry me *grin*
I'll be back in a bitXX
😂😂 My inbox was overloaded with them …. I’ll try to finish them off next week …..
How do you manage in the winter when the canal is frozen? Do you pay to stay in a marina over winter?
You would have to watch my previous videos to see how I cope on winter I’m afraid 😂 and no I don’t go into a marina as I’m a continuous cruiser 😃🏴☠️
Those solar boxes look like handy storage. Are there any tunnels that you can't get through with those on?
My boat sits low in the water so I easily got through both Standedge tunnel and harecastle tunnel with them on 😄🏴☠️
Thanks for a great vlog. Can I ask, where did you get that cool tiller pin? :-)
Ahoy, I got it from a boat selling them on the canal 😄🏴☠️
This is very interesting thanks saving for future references
Love the vlog and the very diplomatic way you answered the question about boaters ‘being down on their luck!!!!! ‘ like you we chose it for the much better lifestyle, so much less stress than when we were working. Our health has much improved since living on our boat. And as for the old cantankerous female….I can’t call her a lady, I would have moored where you stopped, you were knackered and not doing anything wrong! Thank you for being so down to earth and entertaining x
Thank you for your lovely comment … I ended up in a better spot anyway, she was a right miserable sod 😂🏴☠️

@@TheNarrowboatPirate yeah we ran into one on the Rochdale canal a few months ago!
@@rowena11ful Scotland is so beautiful but I bet you are freezing your nips off up there at the moment 😂😂
It has t been too bad so far. But apparently this winter up here hasnt been as cold as last year...will have to wait and see.😀
I sometimes wonder what is wrong with people , that woman was like those who buy a house next to a church then complain about the bells ringing ! ( If any one is wondering you are not supposed to run your engine or a generator if moored near housing, between the hours of 8pm and 8am according to the CRT website) Nice to hear how you came to live on a boat too , Cheers ! Hic !
Thanks Garry, yeah it was really annoying haha but I found a better spot anyway 😃🏴☠️ it was only about 3.30pm too
I think she needs a gang of narrowboats to Moor up opposite her house.
Thanks Daniel 😃🏴☠️ wow I felt cold just reading that and I’m sat next to a roaring stove 😃😂
Great Q&A style. Cheers from Tasmania.
Thanks Steve 😃🏴☠️
Hello Holly! I’m over to you (and subscribed) from Northern Narrowboaters. I’m sure you had some time with those two! ❤️🇨🇦
Ahoy thanks so much for watching 😃🏴☠️ yes I had a fabulous time with the Northern Narrowboaters 😃🏴☠️ I’m Heidi by the way 😂🥃
🤭 Damned spellcheck! ❤️🇨🇦
Re: operating costs - My rate for mandatory health insurance (US) as someone currently unemployed is $6000 a year. (oof) That's JUST health. Not mortgage, fuel, electric, etc. etc. which are all added expenses.
Oh wow that’s a lot … we pay national insurance on earnings which is no where near that … that goodness for our NHS 😃🏴☠️
Great vlog as usual, so very informative and an insight into your life, thank you for your great vlogs, me and missus love em, love to you and Jackie xx
Thanks so much for your lovely comment Dean 😃🏴☠️ and thanks for watching 😃
That was so interesting thank you .......ps who was that silly cow telling you to move on......you were to polite lol...xx stay safe xx
😂😂 I know …. I found a better spot anyway 😂🏴☠️
Heidi. Should be afloat end of the month!! Mark and Chris. Basin End Nantwich
Whoooo hoooo exciting times 😄🏴☠️
Very good but when is part 2 going to be uploaded
New videos every Thursday at 6pm UK time … it takes me ages to edit them together 😂🏴☠️

I am catching up on some of your past videos and you answered loads of my questions on here. You have made the choices which give you the lifestyle you want. I seems that teaching has lost out this time. You sound like a fun teacher to have had, but if the 'system' didn't suit you, then best to be out of it. If ever you need cash, you can go back for a while.
Aww thanks for watching Jimmy 😃🏴☠️ I much prefer being a Pirate to a teacher 😂😂
Is the rudder all the way aft? I'm amazed you can get the bow to turn I assume you do not have a bow thruster?
No bow thruster
The Manchester ship canal must of been alittle scary ive seen the huge tankers on there, I live in Ellesmere port near the boat museum.
Yes it was but I absolutely loved it ❤️🏴☠️
Hi ' 👋 Heidi'
BTW have you ever been on the ' Droitwich, Worcs Canal .
Kind regards
Shaun and Sheri. Xx
Ahoy guys, I’ve done all the Birmingham ones but didn’t go to droitwich as there is a very low bridge there and I would have to take all the shite off my roof 😂😂
Loved the insight to narrow boating a well told story thanks
Thanks Kath 😃🏴☠️
I loved your question and answer session.
Thank you Rosemary 😃🏴☠️
Love your lifestyle. I had a chance to buy a canal boatyard many years ago, but lost the sale because I took too long to make my mind up..duh!
Oh that’s a shame 😃
16:24 I think I'd be forced to moor there for days...You were nice to move on. I'm sure you were wanting to find a place where you were welcome.
Yes, I didn’t want to moor next to that miserable old goat anyway 😂😂
Looks bloody awesome I miss my homeland
Your best video yet!
Aww thanks Sian, it took me about 20 hrs to put it together hahaa
Love your channel, you're very entertaining and easy to listen to. Do you still get to any rave festivals?
Aww thank you 😃 I’ve a couple of festivals this year but no Raves 😃🏴☠️
Loved this...really interesting...I'm now at the stage where I want to work from my boat and get that complete freedom, instead of not being able to go too far from my job...I work in schools too, so obviously can't bring my work home...imagine the risk assessments haha 😄
Cheers 🍻
😂😂 that’s why I had to find alternative ways to make money now which you will see in next weeks …. Work - What a pain lol 😂🏴☠️
Your Q&A was brilliant I really enjoyed it
Thanks so much!
