I love the weird effect of playing fast odd meters ends up sounding like swung half-time straight duple meters. Ivo and his band are legendary!
Salif Ali (the drummer) has this unexplainable ability to play something 'neither 7/8 either 2/4' time signature but to hold it firmly thorough the section of a piece.
The first band I've been impressed with in over a decade! Unreal.

Steve Vai is great, but he can't phrase like these musicians. If anybody came close it was his former boss, Frank Zappa. But Frank couldn't play at these ridiculous tempos. Ivo's band is insane! I still have his Balkanology CD I bought 23 years ago.
Allan Holdsworth is definitely up to the job!
Steve Vai at least appreciated this music, I know him personally and I guarantee to you Steve can play ALL and EVERYTHING. This is a low goal for him.
Why don't you ask him yourself then, I guarantee he will confess that he will never be able to make the flips and jumps this guy makes. No one can play balkan music like this if they don't have it in their blood. You make a ridiculous claim here.

Saw some clown talk about Martin Frost. He is pretty amazing but I'd love to see him play oriental/Balkan music with all the speed and accuracy as Ivo Papasov or any other Bulgarian or Macedonian Clarinet player, or the power, or the soul. Kind of like comparing apples and oranges. He is a CLASSICAL player. That doesn't make him 'better'.
There is no such thing as the 'best clarinettist in the world' anyway.

mymentor No there isn't. Martin Frost is a classical player, and Ivo is a Balkan popular/folk clarinetist, it doesn't make them any better or worse than each other. They are both very talented and among the top performers on the clarinet period, whether it be any genre of music.

Sounds like Azerbaijani music, they even look like them in person....then again....volga bulgarians came from middle asia to Europe.
They are Bulgarians with Roma origin, that's why they look like that. At that time, they were some of the best musicians.

Martin Frost is more handsome that Ivo and is probabaly a better dancer. BUT when it comes to clarinet playing..... I mean come on you can't be serious. Ivo is a legend, a master, a God while Martin just plays the clarinet very good
