    There are so many Frida Kahlo (and Diego Rivera!) sites to visit and see in and around Mexico City that it can be a bit dizzying. I've put together a list of the top ones to check out, including a bonus spot outside of Mexico City in Rivera's hometown of Guanajuato. Begin your sightseeing tour at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in the Zocalo where you can see Frida's first self-portrait from when she was only 19-years-old. If you only have time for one stop, or only wish to visit one museum, then make it Museo Frida Kahlo also known as Casa Azul. Located in Coyoacán, this is Frida's childhood home where she lived a lot of her life and also died. You'll find many of her personal belongings like art supplies, furniture, and clothing as well as some of her art. It's a very busy site so make sure to buy your tickets online in advance to avoid waiting in a really long line! Just around the corner is the Trotsky Museum which feels very raw. Frida and Trotsky had an affair when he and his wife lived at Casa Azul. You can see bullet holes in the bedroom wall from an assassination attempt as well as the study where he was ultimately killed with an icepick to the skull. Another site is Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo located in San Ángel. These modern and distinct structures were built by architect Juan O'Gorman and occupied by the couple from 1934. Diego lived here until his death. I also really enjoyed visiting Museo Dolores Olmedo in Xochimilco, even though all of Frida's artwork was on tour abroad at an exhibition. Dolores Olmedo was a patron of the arts, notably of Diego Rivera's, and she donated her large collection to the people of Mexico. The museum is her old home, a sixteenth century hacienda. I especially loved seeing the many peacocks on the grounds and the unique breed of hairless dogs that live there called Xoloitzcuintli (or Xolo for short). The next museum wouldn't exist without the generosity of Dolores Olmedo: the Anahuacalli Museum. Frida and Diego were passionate about ancient Mexico and preserving that history for future generations. This museum has over fifty thousand pre-Columbian artifacts housed in a pyramid-like structure made of volcanic rock. The last site is a bonus because it's located in Guanajuato (an easy bus ride from Mexico City): Museo y Casa Diego Rivera. This is where Rivera was born and lived until he was six when his family moved to Mexico City. You can see a lot of his early artwork here as well as a painting of Frida Kahlo.
    I hope you enjoy this video and find it helpful! Please let me know if you've been to any of these places or would like to!

    I want to say your best video yet, but then I recall your other videos and they are all great. I have been to Casa Azul but did not make it to Trotsky's house. Still on my to do list for CDMX, along with a few other museums. In another video I asked you to make a video on the Trotsky museum and you have delivered!! Thank you very much! Another museum worth visiting, although somber, is the Museo Memoria y Tolerancia - a sort of genocide museum. Perhaps you walked by it on the way to your coffee overlooking Bellas Artes. Again, many thanks for the great content.

I'd like to visit Frida's house and the other places related to Frida and Diego and I have heard there is a bus that does travel from one site to the next. But it might be all too much in one day. Beautiful video! I have been very blessed to have been to both Casa Azul & the Studios in San Angel. When I visited about 15 years ago Frida's studio was completely opened up .. she had a similar but much smaller painting space as Diego's.. they also had a huge replica of the two Frida's painting with a mannequin dressed as frida and positioned to look as if she was painting .. she also had huge windows in her studio like Diego's space.. i have seen others photo's and videos of Frida's studio and could not figure out why they have closed this space off.. I am sure it was very disappointing!

    Maybe the reason Frida's space in the Museo Estudio D.R. doesn't really give a sense of her is because she didn't really live there for too long. It's reported that she actually hated that kitchen and the space in general because it was too small and cramped, it clashed with the Casa Azul in its open space and areas, which she loved. So maybe there was really nothing of hers there to begin with...

    • @EileenAldis
      @EileenAldis  7 лет назад

      Hi! That's an interesting point and I hadn't heard that she hated it there. It is certainly much smaller than Casa Azul and wouldn't be as lovely to live in, in my opinion. Diego's space is so great and cool to see with the enormous windows and all his furnishings and tools in there.

      Hey Heather! I'm glad I wasn't the only one! After seeing Casa Azul I was just so excited that it would contain more magical artifacts and really give a sense of her personality. Diego's space felt much more lived in to me.
