      Gday, if you are referring to the silver ones, we don't know how we got them. We just had them and they turned out to be useful for sifting frass. But I have started using a different sifting system. Here is the link: shorturl.at/3gocE It is a 9 tier system but you only need to use the first 6.

    I have a plastic dresser from the dollar store. It has 3 draws meal worms in the bottom. beetles in the middle, and screen insect frass in the top draw. for atleast 2 weeks min for the babies to be sorted. I go through the system about every two weeks shifting and moving beetles up and frass up and eventually frass out and stored in a container for plant fertilizer.

    Thank you for sharing your experience and for making this comprehensive video. I'm at the start of my journey, basically starting again after loosing the small collection last summer to a series of Perth 40 degree days. I had ours in the laundry next to the window with the curtains drawn so it remains dark there, but the curtain got left open and the poor things basically baked to death. It was a tough lesson.
    Your setup looks amazing! Thanks for sharing.

      No problem at all. Good luck with round two. I have found a consistent temp is the best. I have just learnt from experience that having them outside in the cold weather slows their growth tremendously. They are back inside now by the fire.

      @@NarrowRoadLiving good point. My new drawer trolley is in the Study. Not the warmest room but it'll have heating if winter gets too cold. Thank you!

      I didn’t. I had heard of them but stubbled on the mealworm when looking for alternative food sources for my chickens.

    How do you prevent them from dying and what kind of wheat bran and oatmeal did you get cuz the market ones have mites that will kill them. :/

      We are trying to sauce a supplier that sells bran in bulk. But at the moment we use a supermarket brand that is unprocessed bran. So far no problems.

    Freeze any substrate for 48 hours always before placing into the bins to feed the worms AKA Oatmeal exspecially you will get a bunch of lil white bugs millions of them. Freezing stops this fron happening.

    With all the work of feeding my animals, if I farm mealworms I am going to stay busy. It’s a challenge.

    Im wondering-(as i watch you lift the egg cartons up to show us the beetles)- why the beetles don’t just leave the drawers and run all over the house? Ive got those plastic drawers myself. They’re nowhere sealed⛷️(ps-i don’t know where that skier came from ,)

    • @NarrowRoadLiving
      @NarrowRoadLiving  9 месяцев назад +2

      Good question - I make sure the egg carton doesn't touch the roof or the sides of the bin. It is very difficult if not impossible for them to climb the plastic sides. I may have seen 2 or 3 on the carpet when they were inside for the first 9 months, and that could have been because they fell out when I was inspecting them. Not something to worry about.
