Ill just add that using a box bellow does give a measure of fuel control, as well as a way to revive a dying flame.

I think any kind of fluffy cloth will do. Just to seal the gaps and yet to minimize friction between piston and the walls.

Ive seen wool, or foam material used. Microfiber cloth is what i used.
