Damn. I just bought a counterfeit as my very first spinner because of the striking design. Had no idea yours was the original. Now I need the real deal!
+Dor-Si lol, thanks. As you can see the original design has a lot of details that the counterfeit cannot duplicate.... even the size!! You can really tell the differences once you know what to look for
Well I gotta say, you have a nice set, and they look high quality, but, I must say BUT, I don't care how high quality and how unique the design is, no fidget spinner is worth 400 plus dollars all for copper type and or stainless steel which you can make and or have someone else make for under 70-80$. I can see why china decided to counterfeit your fidget spinners, look at that insane price, 400 for your lowest high quality spinner and over 800$ for a high end one. I don't condone others stealing and or counterfeiting other entrepreneurs designs, but for that price i think most people would agree that the counterfeit which in honesty all spinners are real not fake which has a far better attractive price still looks good and probably last as long as yours. If you're goal is to attract does in the above middle class and or rich class then hey more power to your design, heck if I had tons of cash then i would of no doubt bought you're unit. I must say though, great job on the design, you should be proud that you created one of the best designs out there.
Thanks for doing this, Ray. It's really amazing to see the difference in capability and tooling. Just to see how much more delicate and deliberate yours is blows my mind.
thanks Michael!! people who make things can appreciate it....12yo kids that just "want" don't really understand the finer points.... or the fact that if i hadn't done this first, there wouldn't be a counterfeit!
Dude..., Man..., When I saw your first video of the 9 gear spinner I was like I would love to have one of those but the price to buy one of yours puts it out of the realm of possibility for me I just don't have that much disposable money to buy your perfected version and work of art and I thought it sucks to see something that cool and not be able to own one but I then saw them starting to be made from China (counterfeits) and thought hey maybe I can finally get my hands on one so I can see what it is like kinda and I am sure there is alot of folks out there like me who are somewhat glad it's possible to afford one like yours although counterfeiting sucks it does offer your products (like) to the masses and allows everyone to be able to enjoy your invention I just look at it like I will never get my hands on yours so I can at least get my hands on something like it for a price I can actually justify and as a up and coming knife maker my self I feel for you as I perfect my designs I am sure some of them will be counterfeit but I see it as at least the people who won't be able to afford one of my custom knives will have a chance to get something like it in their own hands and for that I won't be to upset about it. I mean you know what I mean??
Hi Ray, it's not okay that they steal your design, but the price difference between your original and the fake is amazing. I guess only a very few people would spend that much on a fidget spinner. Best of luck.
it is true that it is quite a big difference... but i dont have an assembly line full of workers who get paid $5 a day either... currently i only sell about 2 of the 9 gears a week and honestly that is plenty of work for me. i do have spinners that START at $30 but for some reason there has been a huge focous on the price of my most expensive one, the 9 gear.
I get that you're mad because they stole your design but you almost deserve it. I know that they are all hand made and very high quality but that doesn't justify a $600 price tag. If you plan on selling any I would try and lower the price. Get the parts manufactured in bulk so all you have to do is assemble them. Assembling one of those would probably take 10 minutes.
deserve it... interesting. does that mean you deserve to get your car stolen because you have a car? or how about your house burglarized because you have a house? when you have something that has value... you deserve to have it stolen?
LOL, i am getting notifications that someone keeps trying to comment on this post.... but they dont realize they are blocked from making comments on my channel. HA!!
man thisthabg is beautiful, I just started getting into spinners, they seem to help with my anxiety and has helped me take less anxiety meds which is awesome. all i have is 2 little cheap ones from the gas station. wi never afford one of these but I'm in love with the 3 gear one. awesome work and craftsmanship sir
Ray Pena you and me both brother. We put our hearts into our work and it sucks that folks want to to take that for granted. The good thing is that the right people recognize that and will always support the right person! #supportlocal
+Southern Ginger Workshop yeah, you get lucky like that sometimes, I actually have 2 more orders going to China since I filed this video... to me that's the most interesting part, that the Chinese market, does not want the Chinese counterfeit!!
Unbelievable dude! I was at a 7 eleven..every time I go I tell them that their spinners are rip offs from my friends original. They look at me like I'm crazy. Btw, same packaging like the ones on display in your video...unbelievable.
you're right about feeling the way you do. But there is a touch of justice..at least a bit. I still can't believe the whole thing happened that fast. Just know that you're one of a kind..you're a bad ass with your hi end work and your content here.
thanks ELOY!! i have a few other ideas for some even more extreme spinners but at this point, screw them!!! im keeping them to myself, the prototypes are almost done!!
I can understand you, but i am sorry to say that i am happy about it because i would never be able to afford an original one :/ but your design ist the best i've ever seen for a fidget spinner. for me this is art work :D
You still make some of the best spinners on the market...Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, Flash, but it would make me mad as well for someone to steal my idea/product but that is just the world we live in...have a great week...
Not many of us can afford to pay $600 for a spinner, so knock-offs are the only option. You are catering to the high-end market so people who buy the knock-offs would not ever buy your spinners anyway. Not that I am for stealing other people's ideas. I'm not. I have had my ideas stolen too, at work, and I have nothing but contempt to losers who do that.
yes that is true. in fact the exposure of the counterfeits ended up bringing me more sales from the "high end" market that will not purchase a counterfeit... but i agree that the 9 gear i make is VERY expensive, but that's the cost for making them one at a time.
I did hear you say that and it is quite ironic. So it's kind of a win-win situation. BTW was there a brand associated with the knock-off? At least it behaves correctly. I got one in which the outer gears do not spin if using the buttons. There is a bearing inside the central gear. :(
wow Ray that is crazy .. im sorry this has happened to you , i know you put alot of effort and time into that ! you can tell just by looking at your spinner that its quality american craftsmanship! do you tumble the gears or bevel them with a machine ?
Ray Pena i was just watching your video on you laser cutting the case insert and there are actually ads selling counterfeit 9 gears showing up in your videos !!!!
Ray Pena ya i know , although its flattering to have someone replicate something that came out of the depths of your brain it kinda irks me , because i know exactly how much work and thought went into this project of yours ! Keep up the amazing work Ray .. Nice cnc laser BTW ! Wish i had one of those ! Lol
yes it has been mentioned... in the beginning i refused to sell any in china... then the counterfeits were being produced and there was no reason to refuse to sell them to the Chinese collectors. as a result the vast majority of the 40 or so original 9 gears were shipped to Chinese collectors.
I bought all counterfeit spinners at first, cause I didn't even know there were "real" ones. Since getting into it, I have replaced all my favorite clones, with the real deals. I think i'd be more apt to buy a $20 version of yours first, see if I like it, if I did, than I would have to have the real deal. So its not all negative having the fakes out there. Kind of like song piracy has increased sales for bands because of increased exposure. Dont get me wrong, it would suck, I think i'm just trying to find a silver lining in a sh*tty situation. Your design is amazing, but, dang, I literally just realized I was buying fake ones cause I was only looking on Amazon, and thats all they have on there. Discovered "real" ones today, and went out and spent $1000 on 7 real ones. Can't wait to get them, I would have to admit thought, I know you put a lot of work into yours and its awesome, its just at the price its over half the cost of my entire collection. So definatly would have to wait for next month before i can spend a ton. But man i do want one of yours though looks so cool. Can't you at least get them off Amazon as the patent holder?
im not surprised in the least it was copied, it can be made cheaper for the normal person(700$ is pretty ridiculous for a fidget spinner) i myself would love to have one of these but as a normal average person could NEVER justify that kind of money for a fidget spinner. so i would be fine with a "knock-off" just to have that kind of designed spinner. not knocking his creation, they are quite beautiful and 1 day i hope to be able to get one of his.
Ray we've talked about this before. I have several videos talking about what China does to Yeti. The most disturbing part is the attitude of Americans that are not only ok with it, they think Yeti is the thief.
Where do you sell the real one? Your website takes me to a link that looks like it wants to install malware. Then upon closing all that it takes me to a facebook page (I don't have facebook) and on there is another link that doesn't work...
Thank you for letting us know of the problem. I never buy spinners more than 50 dollars, but I've never considered they could be counterfeits. Now I need to make sure first... I wonder how, though? Some are like jewelry and can only be seen in small websites with very few hits... Maybe with google image search?
It's true that most of the less expensive spinners (especially those found in retail stores/convenience stores/malls etc., as well as places like Amazon/ebay etc.) are fakes. That's just the way the market is right now. Most producers of popular spinner designs are smaller custom shops with low volume production and typically higher cost, so most of the ones widely available in high volume for a cheap price are fakes/counterfeits to varying degrees (some are just different enough to not technically be considered KOs/clones). That said, there are some cheaper, original designs which, just like the clones/KOs, are made in China and are pretty accessible. Some can be found on Amazon (search for the "C3" as well as the "U13", they're both original Chinese designs found for a pretty low price and they're decent spinners as well as long as you get ones that are well made/not cheap aluminum etc.) and some can be found on places like Spinetic-Spinners (they have spinners from many designers/manufacturers and most are made in China with production outsourced by the designer to Chinese factories for mass production). You can also find some really unique stuff, often for pretty low cost, on Etsy. There are many original designers like Ray here who have their own shops and produce really nice spinners but with lower cost (due to their designs/materials etc. not being as expensive; nothing against Ray and I totally get why the price of his gear spinners are as high as they are; they're basically complex, well-made works of spinning art and it shows). I hope that info helps. You can also watch some of the reviewers here on RUclips where they talk about where each spinner they review comes from so you can find out where to get it as well as whether or not it's actually an original design. Here are a few of the ones I watch regularly: Average Singaporean ChillinwithTwisted420 SpeedyTech Solutions Sal FidgetHaven Reviews Hobby Timmy Spin Space Every one of those reviewers tells you where each spinner came from/who designed/manufactured it etc. so you'll always know whether or not something being shown is a knockoff/fake (and most, if not all of them avoid fakes/don't agree with the practice of cloning). They also give you a good idea as to what each spinner is like (spin times, "fidgetibility", weight, feel/hot spots (sharp points/uncomfortable parts to the touch to watch out for), noise level, portability/pocketability etc. so that you have a good idea of what spinner might be right for you based on what you use the spinner for and how you like a spinner to function/perform.
hey ray I know it's a bummer, I get a lot of ideas from peoples work for my designs but I never directly steal them and I will always credit them. I really hate this fidget spinner fad I think it's ridiculous but I like yours because of the quality of workmanship, care and beauty of the things. I will never buy a fidget spinner but if I did I'd buy a genuine of yours
thanks man!! actually i dont get the whole spinner thing myself.... and I've never purchased one. it just happens that i am equipped to make them and i had a few good ideas along the way! to me the thefet of the idea itself is like rape of the creative process
if I could make a suggestion, I'd really like to see you make a pen where the shaft revolves around the ink tube. you'd need some small bearings but I don't see why it couldn't be done at least this would be a kind of fidgety spinner thing that would actually be a useful item. I mean how many people play with pens anyway
I'm actually shocked you were in a mall!!!! How did that happen?! Not to take away from your point Ray, it's sad that this happens, but it does. Your gears are beautiful.
+Raquel Rencher this kind of thing does happen... but then again, so does murder, starvation, genocide, and other terrible things.... Just because they "happen" doesn't make it right.
good to know the diferece between real and fake, just to me things clear people are getting the fakes because they are cheaper no other reasons, the price of the real 9 gear spinner is almoust what my sallery is in 3 months so yeah, i dont deny the quality in the real ones, but if i cant get the real ones might as well get the next best thing a counterfit one. So good job creating the gear spinner.
oh man i didn't realise you are the original inventor of this, i recently bought one from china website not knowing it is a fake. Where can i get the original one?
+Mark Gomes no it was not possible, I declined all sales to China before the clones came out, when I found out the clones were being made, I asked around, tgey copied it from a picture on Instagram. Once the clones were on eBay, I began selling them to Chinese customers
Just ordered the counterfeit one on amazon. Your spinner looks way better and would love to own one, but way too expensive for me. The Chinese counterfeit lack that steampunk look and aesthetics.
i completely understand, i have had many people purchase mine AFTER they bought the counterfeit. they tell me the difference is huge, but yes my original version is quite expensive
I have to say I agree with all of you said. However unfortunately not everyone have near 800 bucks to purchase your product. I know this is still not the reason to steal your idea and design none should do this and I would probably have the same feeling about it. If you haven't realise it yet, they probably steal all of the design from 3 gears up to 9. I do love your product and website and if the price would be much lower I would definitely buy yours over the cheap crap Chinese quality. Till then unfortunately I'm stuck with the cheap alloy stolen design worth $20. (On the Chinese the gears are probably gold coloured alloys not steel. I did file the sharp edges)
I don't understand why he is so mad, sir who came up with this thing called a Fidget spinner, no offense but if it weren't for that girl who couldn't pay the patent, there would be no nine gear spinner, but I see where you coming from but you can't this be mad mr ray, love your work:)
Incorrect. It was Catherine Hettinger. She filed for a patent in 1993 for a circular device made from a single piece of plastic that spins on the tip of a finger. In her patent application, Hettinger described the device's shape as akin to the U.S. Capitol building. She called it a "spinning toy."
Nycrowki She invented a spinning toy not the fidget spinners we have today Will Cuttler (vorso spin) and the owner of md engineering (formerly scam designs) where the first to make the modern fidget spinner (not invented putting a ball bearing in a piece of metal is not inventing) The confusion was created by a Wikipedia article and everyone can say anything in a Wikipedia article
+TheNextStepp yeah, they really got me with these counterfeit spinners... I'm lucky that there is a segment of the market that only want the authentic article
Bro, I feel your pain, but you should listen to some of these people and try to chime in on the hints. I just ordered Busyminds Nano for $38.00 because I can't afford 100-200 bucks for a spinner, but I want the security of Zerofeuds brand. Rick looked out with those Nanos man. There thick and SUPER smooth. Maybe you could try something similar? A cheaper version of your 9-Gear, but still tight and STILL your brand? I want a 9-Gear, but bro, your gonna lose me to the Thieves prettty soon. Mechforce just did the same, I'm buying their cheaper model. Just a thought.
It's not that surprising that they cloned it. I'm surprised that it took as long as it did for them to do it. All they are worried about is money. They know not everyone can afford a $1,000 spinner so the cheaper version will bring them a ton of money.
+scott smith yeah, the 9 gear isn't 1k but I completely understand that it is beyond the reach of most people... I was creating a work of art, never intended on mass producing it.
Are you in Walnut, Ca?? Someone in Walnut is selling them on ebay. How much do you charge for yours? I would like to buy one for a friend who has an autistic child.
Btw Ray u can do some fine touches to the original that say for example R.P. on one of the sides and some things of how to know which is fake and which is real
There is already an indicator of if it's real.... The price. That being said I have nothing against adding marks ect. Just nobody that actually knows how much the original costs should think the $30 spinner in the mall is legit..
Hopefully the buyers from overseas didn't make these purchases so they themselves can produce their own counterfeits. I've noticed on Amazon that there are various different knock-offs of your spinner. Clearly, it's not just one company that stole your design and it's very likely more will follow suit.
yeah the only reason im even selling them in china is because the counterfeits are already widespread. it would be too expensive for them to make it the way i make it... there is a huge collector market in china that rare only interested in authentic things
the reason why people buy the counterfeit one over the real one is because of the cost yours cost a hundred or more dollars while the counterfeit One cost 16 bucks or so
+Nathan Pratt I understand why people would choose to support a communist nation which has terrible working conditions and slave labor practices... my issue is with the filthy counterfeiters for stealing!!
wow, you made that? awesome!!! can you send me one, I never owned a gear spinner and yours looks great, especially the big one, love to have an original fidget spinner by the creator.
there are not really fake spinners because there is not a main brand name.Theres loads of brand names .usually you have one brand name and all the others are fake. You can get good quality and bad quality spinners. The fidget cube there is a brand name for that and all the others are fake.maybe this one design has a brand name but theres hundreds of designs of spinners
why not outsource a bunch of cheapies from china and sell them also? i would gladly pay an extra $5 or something to buy from the designer. until you do something like that i dont really get the complaint. seems like you probably can sell as many nice ones as you can make. dont get me wrong, i'd probably be pissed also, but i would think of ways to compete with them, and when you are super exclusive and expensive you are not even really competing with the knock offs.
yeah its not about the competition for me or the money, like i said i can stop making them right now and it wont affect me a single bit. its about getting something you have worked so hard to design, perfect, prototype etc.... being treated like garbage!!! yes every single spinner i make is sold before it is made, and no i don't make them because im after the "spinner fortune". i like to make things (if you haven't yet noticed from my channel), i like designing (apparently i have a knack for it lol). the fact that AFTER i put in 10 hours a day in the machine shop, i then put in many more to make these things MYSELF, is because i really enjoy it!! i regularly pull 3-4 all nighters a week so that everyone who wants (and can afford) one of my designs gets one....
Totally. Especially when the original is either sold out or priced way out of a typical kid's price range. For instance I've been waiting and waiting for Mech-force to release more of their Deltacore spinners. In the meantime, they wisely decided to sell their own branded knock-offs in aluminum. I bought one for $50 (they sold out too) and love it. It only made me want the real heavy duty authentic Deltacore more. Last week those became available again. As soon as it comes, my cheaper Deltacore is going to my nephew as there is no way he can afford $150+ even the $50 is expensive for him.
They took your idea because it's something that people wanted but didn't want to spend $600 for. they found a way to make it cheaper and faster, sell it for only $20, and yet still make a profit off of it. most people who buy spinners don't care what it's made out of. most people buy them out of impulse. it's the fun fad of the time. some just want one that doesn't look like the cheap plastic design thats everywhere for a buck.
yeah i get that, but i think that maybe they steal ideas because they are useless pieces of crap that like to steal... part of it for them IS the crime, they just like to steal things... and ideas are something they just dont have.
This reminds me of Chinese buying few Sukhoi Su-27 fighter planes from russia . Russia thought they are going to have good business with china in future . but with in years China reverse engineered the entire jet and mass produced as Shenyang J11 . afterwards Russia stopped all trade of top military equipment.
Interesting video. I own some clones and I won't get into the ethics behind it. I will say one thing however. The Chinese make clones because Europeans or Americans buy the original send it to China to get them mass produced so they can sell them on Amazon/eBay or whatever. The Chinese usually don't have access to RUclips , Instagram or Facebook and they are pretty hopeless when it comes to research. They don't innovate and that's certain but they call cloning "learning" they don't see it the same way as the rest of the world does. They clone their own designs and it's perceived normal. The government doesn't care and even the original makers don't care. They just compete on volume and price. They have at times innovated like the "hoverboard" thing that was huge a couple of years ago and every factory in China was making them. No one even knows who thought of it first and no one cares. All they focus on is producing as much as possible as quickly as possible as cheap as possible until the trend dies. Then they go to the next...Peace
Unfortunately I'm not a rich person so I'll have to stand back from this. You are the original and I respect your standards but I don't have money like that. I liked your video. Keep it up. Maybe you can make more original designs. I look forward to them.
Hate to say but, what he says on the video can not be trusted because, One fidget spinner is new and one is used, also the gears he had on the originally fidget spinner looked like it had water because it is not new, what can you get from reading this? It is because the results he says are not accurate, he needs a control variable to actually have a proper VS match with fidget spinner
People will pay for quality! You have to properly brand your own prestige name. People do know the difference. The theft just means you have something will pay more for the original ! It’s a good thing ! 🤯
i would only be worried if the clone was as good or better, but if the clone sucks it sucks :) but the 1st fidget spinners was creative commons so anybody making & selling fidget spinners are breaking that cc license :/
i feel your pain i really do but the fidget spinner market is like the wild west nobody actually owns anything & its a free for all :/ with a protected design you could do something about it :)
yeah i dont mind if someone makes a version at home for themselves.... a design patent is of little use, the enormous cost of defending it would make it useless
It has to be a completely and I mean completely original design of yours that is trademarked now I don't want to argue I love your video but I'm just sayin
They stole your idea, but they got it to spin a fair bit longer, you started your's second. You should have used materials with a higher density or weighted it with plugs of another material.
2 seconds is not a fair bit longer. the thing with mine is that the weight is evenly distributed since i used stainless steel and brass. the counterfeit has an aluminum frame with brass plated gears... when you think about it theirs really should sin ALOT longer than it does
if you call yourself as an inventor. Why don't you make something that no one can copy your work :) . I got both fake and real one here (3 gears spinner). The quality is difference i can see. But if you could redesign it to make 3 big gears rotate in the same direction, it could make your product unique (add small gear between big gears i suggest), and it also fun if we can spin it by any gear we can touch without change it rotation's direction :)
that is not a bad suggestion, but just about anything can be copied. my next design will be out very soon but i wont publish a video on it though. it will be on the website and facebook page
+brian dewey no, that's what children care about. There is a segment of the market that is interested in high quality craftsmanship, and original works from the original designer
Would I rather the original vs the fake ? Hell yeah! Do I want to spend $700+ on the original vs the $18? Hell no!!! I don't mind spending good $ for craftsmanship but $700 for a fidget spinner is just plain outrageous. Sorry just have to be honest.
so what you are saying is that it is okay for someone to steal your car as long as they can sell it for less than you paid for it? because that is what it sounds like... since the topic of the video is THEFT... i think you are saying that theft is perfectly acceptable.
Ray Pena well really the topic is "REAL VS FAKE" since thats what you titled the video. But If you wanna talk about theft. Tell me why when china "steals" a desing or idea, us Americans are so quick to talk about how messed up its is when ideas and desings are stolen from other countries by the US as well? I guess is ok for us to do it because we are quick to justify it by saying that it was made so much better or with better materials ect... Let's be realistic for a sec. The US does it too, it just sucks when you on the sh**ty end of the stick I know. But seriously, nothing compares to the way the US "STOLE" the land from the Indians and Mexican and then went and stole the Africans from their land to do all the heavy and dirty work here. SMH... But that's another subject I know... A real good point I already had in mind b4 I read it on someone else's comment. Is the fact that that's what you get when you over price your product. I would have just added the fact that you didn't take the time to patten your product either. By doing that you opened the door for the next guy to do it and at a fraction of your price. What you think the results of those 2 mistakes are? Much less sales for you of course because at the end of the day it's just a fidget spinner. If the original had a price tag of $150-$200 I honestly would have considered it. But in this video the generic one that was compared was one of the first generic desings that was very low end. Sorry to say, but now there's some clones just as high end as the original for less than $100 and they even look nicer IMO no offence. Now which way you think I would go? Bingo!!! But thinking and I say "thinking" because no one really knows for sure if you really came up with that desing. Remember there's no patten involved. But thinking that yours is the original, I might of cough up and extra $50 or $100 depending on how it looked. But an extra $500-$600 No way! Only serious collectors with that type of bank would pay $600-$700 or even over $1000. But that's just a small percentage of customers you the "creator" are making your money on. Compared to the volume of sales the clones is making that's pocket change in the end. Sometimes less is ends up to be more. Food for thought...
Well not everyone has $600 to spend as it say on your website but then its is shitty that someone would steal ur degin which u put alot of work in to. Id lov to own the $600 one but i cant sadly and that why i'm happy there is the much much cheaper verison so then i can enjoy these thing with out spending a good bit of money again it shitty that someone would take ur idea. Also people would copy ur degin becoues it sell and they see that it makes money so they copy it at a much cheaper price. Did u think people wouldnt copy ur idea thats it happens to everyone.
i bought one of these counterfeit spinners not knowing there was an original at all. after finding your vid, i went to your website to see what the price difference was. couldn't find a price. your site boasts that your spinners are featured on a site called spinnerlist.com. i went there and didn't find any of your gear spinners amongst their catalog. i'm not condoning intellectual property theft, but if you're not even selling these things and there is a market, why be surprised when someone else jumps in to fill that market?
actually the price is on the website but it is very expensive (as original authentic products with R&D expenses are). i would not say that the site "boasts" being on spinner list, but it does have a link at the bottom most portion of the page. Spinner list is very strangely organized so if you are looking for a specific thing you really need to have an idea of where it is. when you get to their page you see their "Store" but they dont sell my spinners, only i do. they list them in the "DB" section (data base). im actually going to update the link since they have actually changed which page is their home page... it use to be the data base page. lastly here is the link to the 9 gear on my site but again it is expensive.... www.realgearspinners.com/home/9-gear-fidget-spinner
Was your design copyrighted/trademarked/patented/registered in any way?
it wasn't but that wouldn't matter, i would not be able to afford to defend it!!
HA!!
Ray Pena you do know that no fidget spinner can be fake, every fidget spinner is real.
man thisthabg is beautiful, I just started getting into spinners, they seem to help with my anxiety and has helped me take less anxiety meds which is awesome. all i have is 2 little cheap ones from the gas station. wi never afford one of these but I'm in love with the 3 gear one. awesome work and craftsmanship sir
+Vapesters Lounge thank you very much... from the beginning, desugn and quality was my primary concern. Which is why the cist is so high.
This just makes me sad. Good for you to put a video out there! Keep up the good work brother!
+Southern Ginger Workshop thanks Zach, it still pisses me off but there is really nothing to be done now.
All of a sudden I just feel the need to buy one
Interesting
Actually both of you copied the fidget spinner part which was invented by Catherine hettinger a chemical engineer.
Not the general idea... this particular design. And hers didn't have a bearing...
Unbelievable dude! I was at a 7 eleven..every time I go I tell them that their spinners are rip offs from my friends original. They look at me like I'm crazy. Btw, same packaging like the ones on display in your video...unbelievable.
+ESCAGEDO WOODWORKING isn't that some shite!!!
+ESCAGEDO WOODWORKING well, you know the true story... that's what counts!!
you're right about feeling the way you do.
Patent them or some sort of protection. I know it's expensive. Maybe there's a work around?
I can understand you, but i am sorry to say that i am happy about it because i would never be able to afford an original one :/ but your design ist the best i've ever seen for a fidget spinner. for me this is art work :D
You still make some of the best spinners on the market...Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, Flash, but it would make me mad as well for someone to steal my idea/product but that is just the world we live in...have a great week...
thanks Robert!!! yeah it is the unfortunate way of the world.
Hey where can I get the sharp death star one ?
+Chinga3000 from www.realgearspinners.com
wow Ray that is crazy .. im sorry this has happened to you , i know you put alot of effort and time into that !
you can tell just by looking at your spinner that its quality american craftsmanship!
do you tumble the gears or bevel them with a machine ?
thanks!!! i bevel each gear, i tumbled the steel ones in 80 grit garnet and i did not care so much for the finish!!
Ray Pena i was just watching your video on you laser cutting the case insert and there are actually ads selling counterfeit 9 gears showing up in your videos !!!!
Ray Pena i thought you may be beveling them , very nice fit and finish it looks !
+TRUMP2016 Local187 WallBuilders Union yeah, I saw that... Google puts what it wants I the ads, they don't care
Lol
I'm not sure if anyone has already said this but is it possible the Chinese are buying your original in order to copy it?
yes it has been mentioned... in the beginning i refused to sell any in china... then the counterfeits were being produced and there was no reason to refuse to sell them to the Chinese collectors. as a result the vast majority of the 40 or so original 9 gears were shipped to Chinese collectors.
The most disturbing part is the attitude of Americans that are not only ok with it, they think Yeti is the thief.
yeah...its infuriating!! ill have to search for those on your channel
THIS GUY MAKE THE 9 GEAR FIGDET SPINNER WITH 42 PIECES HOW CRAZY IS THAT THIS GUY IS AMAZING
Thank you
Where do you sell the real one? Your website takes me to a link that looks like it wants to install malware. Then upon closing all that it takes me to a facebook page (I don't have facebook) and on there is another link that doesn't work...
The website is no longer mine, I let the domain expire
How much is that box set you have in the video? I'd like to purchase one!
+xMerkNation it is available on the website, www.realgearspinners.com
Wow those are awesome designs you came up with!
+William Tracy thank you, I actually have 4 more
Thank you for letting us know of the problem. I never buy spinners more than 50 dollars, but I've never considered they could be counterfeits. Now I need to make sure first... I wonder how, though? Some are like jewelry and can only be seen in small websites with very few hits... Maybe with google image search?
it is very difficult to know which are authentic and which are counterfeit. that's why i made the video
Here are a few of the ones I watch regularly:
Average Singaporean
ChillinwithTwisted420
SpeedyTech Solutions
Sal
FidgetHaven Reviews
Hobby Timmy
Spin Space
Every one of those reviewers tells you where each spinner came from/who designed/manufactured it etc. so you'll always know whether or not something being shown is a knockoff/fake (and most, if not all of them avoid fakes/don't agree with the practice of cloning).
I mean how many people play with pens anyway
hmmm... that is an interesting thing
I'm actually shocked you were in a mall!!!! How did that happen?! Not to take away from your point Ray, it's sad that this happens, but it does. Your gears are beautiful.
someone told me it was there so i went to see for myself!!
+Raquel Rencher this kind of thing does happen... but then again, so does murder, starvation, genocide, and other terrible things.... Just because they "happen" doesn't make it right.
Do you still sell it? The linked to your website doesn’t work.
no, i dont sell it anymore. i took the website down a few years ago
Well I would be more than happy to buy one of yours but I can't find them for sale anywhere.
I appreciate it, but I no longer produce them
good to know the diferece between real and fake, just to me things clear people are getting the fakes because they are cheaper no other reasons, the price of the real 9 gear spinner is almoust what my sallery is in 3 months so yeah, i dont deny the quality in the real ones, but if i cant get the real ones might as well get the next best thing a counterfit one. So good job creating the gear spinner.
Does the bottons of your fake 9 gears tighten up?
No idea
Well, I have a I guess rip off Gear spinner, but like, is it ok if i still use it because, im getting kinda worried.
Mike Reyes lol, yeah you don't have a problem with using it, it's just that it is counterfeit of my own design
Ray Pena Ohh ok, yeah because I paid 40$ for this counterfit, but its still cool for me to use I guess.
Do you sell 9 gear original anymore? If yes, let me know I would like to buy from u.
+Arun V Vattaparambil Yes I do, the website is www.realgearspinners.com
When are you going to have more 3 gear spinners for sale? I really want one.
i will have some in about 2 weeks!!
Awesome. Can't wait
oh man i didn't realise you are the original inventor of this, i recently bought one from china website not knowing it is a fake. Where can i get the original one?
the original is only available from www.realgearspinners.com
Just a thought.. is it possible that they purchased the original at 2x the price just so that they could effective make copies ???
+Mark Gomes no it was not possible, I declined all sales to China before the clones came out, when I found out the clones were being made, I asked around, tgey copied it from a picture on Instagram. Once the clones were on eBay, I began selling them to Chinese customers
Gotcha
what will be its cost
Where can we by your spinner from
from www.realgearspinners.com
Just ordered the counterfeit one on amazon. Your spinner looks way better and would love to own one, but way too expensive for me. The Chinese counterfeit lack that steampunk look and aesthetics.
i completely understand, i have had many people purchase mine AFTER they bought the counterfeit. they tell me the difference is huge, but yes my original version is quite expensive
Hey how can we get real 9 gear fidget spinner that you have in a case with 2 gear fidget spinner and one gear online in rupees? PLEASE REPLY
not sure about the cost in Rupees, but you can order one on the website www.realgearspinners.com
Thank you for replying my question, but the price of this 9 gear spinner is in dollar
+Saransh Goel yes, its in dollars
Where can I buy the original?
that is easy: www.realgearspinners.com
I don't wanna be shitty but.... do you actually hold a patent on that design?
patents don't save you from Chinese piracy
I don't understand why he is so mad, sir who came up with this thing called a Fidget spinner, no offense but if it weren't for that girl who couldn't pay the patent, there would be no nine gear spinner, but I see where you coming from but you can't this be mad mr ray, love your work:)
Blake harrison
The inventor of the modern fidget spinner is called Will Cuttler
Will doesn't look like a girl
Incorrect. It was Catherine Hettinger. She filed for a patent in 1993 for a circular device made from a single piece of plastic that spins on the tip of a finger. In her patent application, Hettinger described the device's shape as akin to the U.S. Capitol building. She called it a "spinning toy."
Nycrowki
She invented a spinning toy not the fidget spinners we have today Will Cuttler (vorso spin) and the owner of md engineering (formerly scam designs) where the first to make the modern fidget spinner (not invented putting a ball bearing in a piece of metal is not inventing)
The confusion was created by a Wikipedia article and everyone can say anything in a Wikipedia article
I was wondering about it cause I saw em on eBay as low as 8 bucks and thought something was wrong.
+TheNextStepp yeah, they really got me with these counterfeit spinners... I'm lucky that there is a segment of the market that only want the authentic article
Ray Pena Ray is the only legit gear spinners. 👍🏼
all realness aside did you patent your design
Where can I buy a real one?
i don't make them anymore, but the counterfeits are still on amazon
I feel really bad now because i recently bought a counterfeit nine gear spinner. It was just cheaper. I'm sorry this happened to you.
its ok, you didn't know it was a counterfeit.
I'm glad I didn't invest anymore in making these... who knew it would be so quick
Could you do helical gears? And how much?
Also with ceramic barrings.
Sorry I don't make these anymore
It's not that surprising that they cloned it. I'm surprised that it took as long as it did for them to do it. All they are worried about is money. They know not everyone can afford a $1,000 spinner so the cheaper version will bring them a ton of money.
+scott smith yeah, the 9 gear isn't 1k but I completely understand that it is beyond the reach of most people... I was creating a work of art, never intended on mass producing it.
i assume china doenst know that its probably pressed together with bearing press
Are you in Walnut, Ca?? Someone in Walnut is selling them on ebay. How much do you charge for yours? I would like to buy one for a friend who has an autistic child.
+nimueladyofthelake no, not in Cali. In DE. You can find the original 9 gear on the website www.realgearspinners.com
What's the fake spinners spin time
+Shajitha Nazar no idea
and how can I get the original one?
+Jean K. Motta you can get the original on the website www.realgearspinners.com
Ray Pena I see, thanks!!!
What is the price difference?
quite considerable, about 15:1... but then again i dont have Chinese slave labor to manufacture them
Btw Ray u can do some fine touches to the original that say for example R.P. on one of the sides and some things of how to know which is fake and which is real
yes, a good idea
Where is that place
+Creepergundam123 in delaware
NOW U MAKE ME WANT TO RETURN MY FAKE ONE WHICH IS 20$ BUT ITS NO REFUND. THANKS ALOT
+EggoToast GT lol, that's how it goes sometimes
the reason why people buy the counterfeit one over the real one is because of the cost yours cost a hundred or more dollars while the counterfeit One cost 16 bucks or so
+Nathan Pratt I understand why people would choose to support a communist nation which has terrible working conditions and slave labor practices... my issue is with the filthy counterfeiters for stealing!!
wow, you made that? awesome!!! can you send me one, I never owned a gear spinner and yours looks great, especially the big one, love to have an original fidget spinner by the creator.
+New York King thanks, sorry I can't give these away
You have such a beautiful design such as Leo Demino from 2r Designs with his axiom.....I havent seen a clone yet (knock on wood)
thank you, i guess it was the fact that it is so different from anything else, that made it a target for the cloners
there are not really fake spinners because there is not a main brand name.Theres loads of brand names .usually you have one brand name and all the others are fake. You can get good quality and bad quality spinners. The fidget cube there is a brand name for that and all the others are fake.maybe this one design has a brand name but theres hundreds of designs of spinners
+Simone Oconnell that's the point... in this case MY DESIGN has been counterfeited! There is very clearly an original brand and all others are fakes!
I am sorry this has happened it really is a great design
I SALUTE you SIR. the TIME and THE LABOR OF LOVE. you put into it. i already cancelled my pirchase . after iv seen your Video
+Larry Macandog awesome, thank you!
why not outsource a bunch of cheapies from china and sell them also? i would gladly pay an extra $5 or something to buy from the designer. until you do something like that i dont really get the complaint. seems like you probably can sell as many nice ones as you can make. dont get me wrong, i'd probably be pissed also, but i would think of ways to compete with them, and when you are super exclusive and expensive you are not even really competing with the knock offs.
yeah its not about the competition for me or the money, like i said i can stop making them right now and it wont affect me a single bit. its about getting something you have worked so hard to design, perfect, prototype etc.... being treated like garbage!!! yes every single spinner i make is sold before it is made, and no i don't make them because im after the "spinner fortune". i like to make things (if you haven't yet noticed from my channel), i like designing (apparently i have a knack for it lol). the fact that AFTER i put in 10 hours a day in the machine shop, i then put in many more to make these things MYSELF, is because i really enjoy it!! i regularly pull 3-4 all nighters a week so that everyone who wants (and can afford) one of my designs gets one....
I guess i got the fake one,but thanks for reviewing the spinners and compare
i only made 40 of the original ones, so most of the ones you see are fake
China is a problem
Yes, now the fashion for these toys.
+Аleksey Bek it certainly is!
Great video! Keep it up
+MisterBassBoost thanks!! Will do
beautiful craftsmanship your spinner
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it
The original costs $600 and the counter fit you can find a lot in ebay for about 10$, not sure if I would spend $600 for a spinner,,
Cheap knock offs are exactly that
what will be its cost in indian
+Praveen Kumar the original is very expensive. What the cost is in Rupees I don't know. You can find it on the website www.realgearspinners.com
Then they go to the next...Peace
since you said small state of Alton you live in the same state while I do
I wanted to get your original spinner but your shop was closed so I got the false version.
yes, i had too many orders!! that's why i had to stop taking new ones. but it is open now
Understood
Unfortunately I'm not a rich person so I'll have to stand back from this. You are the original and I respect your standards but I don't have money like that. I liked your video. Keep it up. Maybe you can make more original designs. I look forward to them.
+CoCo at this point I think I'm going to keep my original designs to myself, that way they cannot be stolen
Understood
Hate to say but, what he says on the video can not be trusted because, One fidget spinner is new and one is used, also the gears he had on the originally fidget spinner looked like it had water because it is not new, what can you get from reading this? It is because the results he says are not accurate, he needs a control variable to actually have a proper VS match with fidget spinner
Wrong on every point
can u do a ninja blade fidget spinner and it's sharp and colour is gold and u can spin it pls can u do it.
+Gerasimos is gaming and vlog yes I can but I think that there have been several made by others
People will pay for quality! You have to properly brand your own prestige name. People do know the difference. The theft just means you have something will pay more for the original ! It’s a good thing ! 🤯
Glad you liked it
Ok tell me if u come to know it in further
i would only be worried if the clone was as good or better, but if the clone sucks it sucks :) but the 1st fidget spinners was creative commons so anybody making & selling fidget spinners are breaking that cc license :/
its not about making fidget spinner, i dont care what they make... the issue is with STEALING my design (or anyone else design).
i feel your pain i really do but the fidget spinner market is like the wild west nobody actually owns anything & its a free for all :/ with a protected design you could do something about it :)
i designed & made a few diy spinners myself & i want people to copy them its a compliment :)
yeah i dont mind if someone makes a version at home for themselves.... a design patent is of little use, the enormous cost of defending it would make it useless
yours is the real deal & is a beautiful piece of work the other is not even close to yours i wouldn't even call it a clone :)
there's always going to be people that want something for nothing it's too bad
so true!!!
It's not counterfeit if other people other than you have made it or if the colouring is different
+Mr Dreebles making a copy of the design IS WHAT MAKES IT a counterfeit!!
It has to be a completely and I mean completely original design of yours that is trademarked now I don't want to argue I love your video but I'm just sayin
thank you for making this video
+nightmare in action nighmare in action my pleasure
They are not cheep Chinese made they are different made YOU EVEN SAID THE SIZE IS BIGGER AND USED SCREWS
comeon dude you are just saying that yours is the original and searching for minor differences to sell us your spinner thats redicilous
Mine is the original, and I don't care anymore
It's sad they do that stuff.
yes it is!!!
awesome design dude, but they copy everything, its not personal :)
+Moshe Lemberger thank You! Yeah I know it's not personal, but still feels that way
thanks for the info!! real cool spinner too
+Marla White you're welcome
Yea but it's 100 dollars vs 12 dollars..
+gorillaE999 still not a reason to steal
Can you pretty pretty of all time please make the food logo fidget spinner pretty pretty pretty please
I have no idea what that is
lol you know anyone can make one of these sure you might be the first to come up with it but plenty of other ppl can still make there own
literly all ppl care abotu is balince and spin time
+brian dewey ok, let's see YOU make one
+brian dewey no, that's what children care about. There is a segment of the market that is interested in high quality craftsmanship, and original works from the original designer
hi pls make a paw patrol fidget spinner
