It is so heartening to see your inspiring talent and skill. I am a 73 year old jazz musician, a black woman who has lived and seen much of America’s history first hand, and believe me, what you are doing is groundbreaking! I am brought to tears. Moreover, your generosity and eagerness to share with other aspiring young artists who dream of walking in your footsteps says it all. You, dear one, are a treasure. 🥰
Hi Thomas The beauty of this video is not only the art work that you've created, but also, the mindset of sharing knowledge, which encourages others to do the same. This is a joy to behold. Sending you positive vibes from London.
I've always done small projects, intimidated and turned down doing larger scale. Thank youuuu for inspiring me to Go For It! You're a Blessing! Excited to give it a go. Thanks again for sharing your talent!🙏🏽❤️
I would have never guessed this mural was painted by one person. It’s a wonder watching your process and having access to all this information. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise!
Hi Detour, found you by coincidence while researching Murals, fell in love with the idea to paint a Mural on a wall in my bedroom, I can't paint Detour or draw, admire the artists that can and many times passionately wish I could. Kind regards Jamee
Welcome aboard! Definitely try it out and have fun. every says they cant paint until they pick up a brush and paint. then is all about enjoying yourself.
Absolutely incredible work, clear communication and understanding of the tools makes it easy to understand and take a lot of information “home” with you. 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Thanks for making this series! I've been interested in putting some murals around my neighbourhood for a while, and this gives a solid direction of how to go about it.
I love your videos so much. This is all SO HELPFUL and answers literally all of my questions. High-five for using all the tech you can too, like the drones and the 3D printing.
Hi . I just want to say thank you for all your videos. Helps me a lot with my new mural painting gig. My next year project would be 3 floors high, it will be my biggest mural ever, thanks to you I know I can take on this big task . Bravo brother
I'm still in the beginning of my career as an artist and really wish I too could do murals some day. So aiming towards that, I'll start with watching your videos, these seem really good!
This is the most quality information about mural painting i seen so far. Thank you for taking the time too share the equipment, the rental, the project proposal and contract process. Please consider making a video about the insurance part. For these big projects that's something is not common knowledge. That sprayer for the primer is so much time saving. I thought you would just have someone do that. I almost guess the price right but i didn't get if you were including the material in there price of it was after.
Ty ty love it..ty, I so have been on a quest to find the type of paint you all use. I love your vids. I'm hooked. I love your passion to help others. I'm older but want to do this at least once in my life time. Ty ty ty.
Hi again. This was such a great video. Thank you. Question. In your experience , what are some cheaper yet effective protective solutions for outdoor work, like murals , park benches and tables etc?
Thank you for this detailed, very well produced video. I learned so much. I'm very fascinated by the "doodle grid"! I've never seen that before and can't wait to try this process for placement and enlarging works of art. I'm not young anymore so I'll probably never do a piece this large personally. I doubt I'll have need of a drone, lol, but this is such a smart idea. Nice work on everything and thanks again so much for sharing. I hope you made a few dollars on this after all that photographing, renting equipment, and blocking off traffic, painting, and coating!
Hello! Thank you for these videos! They are extremely helpful. I am about to paint my first mural, and I'm excitedly and cautiously moving forward in the process. I will be painting on a new outdoor addition to a restaurant in Los Angeles, on wood. My image will be minimal lines on their already white painted wood. Would you recommend painting the anti graffiti coating on everything, or just where my image lies? Thank you for your help!
Thanks! I would use it on everything you image lies on, or areas that it would be difficult to buff over any tags. if its not too much extra, i usually will do the entire wall so the maintenance is easier. they can just presure wash the entire wall if needed.
Amazing work!! I was wondering if you took any precautions to protect the sides of the wall when spraying your base coat I noticed you spray right along the edge of the tall wall and also next to the window, is that something to worry about? I’m curious how you solve the over spray problem
Most of that was solved by using a cardboard as a shield and putting the sprayer on low pressure. i also used a roller on the right side where there was too much margin for over spray error. so its a combination of all that.
Hi Detour! Thanks for this awesome videos. I was wondering if you could explain more about the sketching process? What paint do you use? What do you do if you make a mistake in your drawing? Thanks a bunch!
Great suggestion! I'll record a video on the sketching process during my next mural. i use only transparency spraypaint to sketch so it doesnt leave super opaque lines. the lighter the better. that way when you make a mistake its easier to fix and sketch over. it like lightly sketching on a note pad.
How do you decide how much Spraypaint or paints of gallon you use for your murals? What is the ratio of spraypaint and gallon paints? Your videos are amazing was pretty awesome to see we have one of your murals here in KC.
Hey Thomas! Would love to see this mural vid updated as the coating you use (which I had taken on advisement from this video) detrimentally affected my mural in Canada. It's a bit dusty and the product totally attracts the dust and it has completely covered 3000 sq ft in dirt. It was installed properly it is just the nature of that product unfortunately. I am desperately searching for a fix, because it is so heart wrenching to see a large mural be this dirty in a year, as it was a gift to my community. I know we spoke and you said you also have stopped using it. I would just hate for anyone else to be stuck in this same boat. Any help is welcome.
Can you talk about how you learned how to use the various equipment you use any kind of certifications/licenses you have to have and how to obtain them?
Brilliant! Thank you for sharing. So concise, informative, and helpful. And if you need a new tool you just make it. Have you ever painted on a corrugated surface? I'm preparing to paint a Blue Ridge Mountain scene on a metal container and am concerned about the uneven surface causing distortion and the inability to use a roller. Thanks again- really impressive.
You are so amazing! Can you tell me how did you figure up your labor for this, like what formula do you typically use? Next question, do you require a deposit and what percentage? Finally, how did you create your contract? Thank you for sharing because some artist do not like to share the things you share.
Normally i would implore all artists to do a 1/3 or 1/2 deposit. I have good cash flow so i didn't necessarily require a deposit on this project and the client is good for it.
You are so cool and creative! Thanks for sharing :) did the sunshine affect you at all? I noticed it was shining super hard on the picture of the doodle grid
Yes. The marine protective coating is great because it is simple to power-wash any tags off. Because the entire wall is coated with this, its safe easy to clean off any area. You will just need to rent a scissor lift to get up there. 😅 that's the annoying part if it does happen.
This is a great series of videos! Truly amazing work and I love your channel. You mentioned that the marine coating helps to protect the paint from direct sun, but does the exposure to the sun also affect your color choices in the design phase? I imagine the visual quality of the hues you've selected changes between direct sun and shade, but you can't account for the full range of lighting conditions under which your murals are viewed. Is it something you worry about?
Great question. the exterior and spray paint i use are graded for outdoor long term exposure so i not limited to the color spectrum. the coating has extra UV protection so it will last even longer. The only colors I do stay away from is the florescent colors because they fade regardless of how much you protect them with a coating.
Ive been doing murals, walls, sidewalks and window art but not to this scale (yet) thanks for this rad video! Can u tell me how much it cost you to do a piece this large and what you charge the company? Thank ~ Kat McButterfly ✌🏻
