    this is exactly what i was thinking when I was trying to decide what should be considered an outlier for a project.It just doesn't make sense.

    I totally agree with you, the problem is that SPSS follows this rule on boxplots, so do you know a way to 'cancel' this characteristic in SPSS?

    SPSS shows you outliers based on boxplots but it does not remove them in its analysis, does it? On the other hand, the rule used to highlight outliers in SPSS is not based on 2 standard deviations, is it? I think the remove of outliers is related to the trimmed mean in a sense that turns it more reliable, less afected to extreme values...
