  • In October of 1958, the FIA introduced the Formula Junior category, limiting cars to 1.1 liter, 400 kilo restrictions, with all mechanical parts from production vehicles. Journalists initially supposed that the category was made specifically for Italians and the Fiat 1100cc engine, but British BMC and German DKW power plants ended up dominating the series in 1959.
Much like the Italian Stanguellini, the Elva, designed by Frank Nichols, was a contemporary front engine design, and was successful in England for a single year before Cooper and Lotus showed up at the beginning of 1960 with their rear engined cars.
