  • Sir Jackie on NBC? For that matter, Indycars on NBC? I guess I just didn't really notice back then. "The Indycars are on, time to throw in a tape!"
Even Gary Gerould can't talk over a fly-over. Jet fighters are loud. Or was it the Snowbirds? Jet trainers are that loud, too.
Anyone else miss beer & cigarette sponsorship? Yeah, I know smoking is a 'Bad Thing', and too much beer makes you fat & kills the liver..but it seems to me that most professional racing series' had much better/faster/cooler cars back when there was that much money flowing around. "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday.."? Bah. Run up front every weekend with the right paint on the car, and they'll buy Marlboros and Miller every day.
Cool new C4 Corvette setting the pace.
Al Sr. picks up a seat at Granatelli, I don't blame Guerrero for bowing out after spending all that time on his head at 200mph (and anyone who says Roberto's slide 'wasn't that long' has probably never been on their head at all..)
"You must survive Prince's Gate without wing damage!" Sir Jackie and seriously big graphics say so!
Old corner worker here, but I've got friends who work Start. They confirm the wave-off. Don't throw the flag just because it's a Pro event. Make 'em behave. It's supposed to be a fair fight.
Mario's mill mucks up pretty quickly. Danny and Al Jr. have a nice dice. Cogan finds the wall, and Mario's nephew "blows up real good" (to borrow one of my favorite Canadian comedy acts' catch phrases).
Poor Teo. The Porsche stops again. I still wonder what would have happened to that effort if Holbert hadn't died, though.
Even today, I'm surprised at all the Stop & Go penalties! Running over air lines (for which I can't really blame drivers, I'll bet they never saw them from down there in the tub), ignoring the blend lines (for which I do blame drivers, the lines are normally painted up far enough in front of the pit exit to actually see them from the cockpit)..what a mess.
In the end, Al Jr. walks it by 12sec or so. Hits his marks, doesn't do anything stupid in the pits, doesn't go nuts on fuel when he's leading just to set a lap record or something. Watch him. Once he's got a gap on Danny (who had one of those 'Stop & Go' penalties), he holds a clinic on what to do when holding a half-decent lead.
To the ad fans: Yeah, I can tell that I was home when I recorded this. But there's still a few from my bathroom breaks. Long story short: Head for the mountains, but avoid the Noid. ;)
Everybody crack open a Molson Export Ale, and enjoy!

Funny you mention that blend line rule; Four years later in this same race, Mikey passed Rahal on the blend line when they both came out of the pits at the same time much in the same way as Hollywood Danny did in this race, but CART deemed it a "unavoidable maneuver" and did not penalize him. Just pointing that out in case people forgot.

+Randy Dubin ,even all these years later, it's still weirdly "enforced" (or not) in the US. Last time I flagged Petit LeMans was about 2013 or so. So many folks would have been penalized in the ELMS..over here, I don't think any of us ever even called it in to Control.

Thanks for uploading these old races! I agree with you about the alcohol and tobacco sponsorships. They brought so much money into motorsports it's a shame all that money isn't around today.
