I've learned more about American and world history in the past few years from Professor Thomas Sowell than I've learned in middle and high school. He's a brilliant man with a great deal of knowledge about history.
He's been a university professor, a columnist, written numerous books, testified before congress, been on multiple tv interview shows over the decades.....people just need to stop letting the "education system" be in charge.

As a people the psychological effects of slavery still stain our thinking today not by choice, but by the fact that the way our country and it's people think is based on those morals. What even he fails to bring up is that those slaves who survived transport to the new world, while still slaves, were treated better and lived longer healthier lives than those that were never sold outside Africa. American colonists, at least, treated slaves as investments. They fed them, allowed them to rest and even have children. Those that remained in Africa (or worse, were sold to the middle east) lived short, lean and dirty lives that basically consisted of working until you drop and being left to die where you fell or being killed immediately to stop the noise you might have been making. I hate to use the word "lucky" to describe any person that is enslaved, but one could've done worse than being sold to white people

The American trade was only dealing with numbers in the hundreds of thousands- about a third of how many whites were involved in the Barbary. However… the Atlantic Slave Trade, started much earlier, dwarfs both at 10M black africans. Millions were imported to America from Britain in THIS trade. So no, he isn’t really making a point here. Its good to point out the many different trades though, and generally educate on them.

Sowell's a hack. Just because slavery has been a universal problem doesn't mean that what happened in the US can be more or less downplayed or justified to be more humane than other forms of slavery.
All forms of slavery can be acknowledged, but the particular cruelties against black people in america are worthy of exposure.
Then why are only black people in U.S the focus of reparations. If anything African countries should be first in line to get reparations from the west because the effects of the trans Atlantic slave trade is still present. But you don’t see them demanding reparations. Because they aren’t entitled lazy brats like African Americans in US. Put some respect on Sowell’ name. Unlike you race hustlers he actually lived through Jim Crow. You’re an idiot.
The claim that there were more white slaves in north Africa than black slaves in America seems questionable. But Sowell has spent his life researching. He's in a position to know. So I don't doubt him.

I would like to see a source though. It's quite well documented that 10+million were shipped to the New World from Africa. I can only find figures of 1-1.25million whites in N. Africa.

@@maxgreene88 He’s kind of making his own narrative. We have a few different trades to talk about. He, specifically, is comparing the American Slave Trade to the Barbary Slave Trade. The American trade was only dealing with numbers in the hundreds of thousands- about a third of how many whites were involved in the Barbary. However… the Atlantic Slave Trade, started much earlier, dwarfs both at 10M black africans. Millions were imported to America from Britain in THIS trade. So no, he isn’t really making a point here. Its good to point out the many different trades though, and generally educate on them.

Blacks build the Americas. Reparation here has nothing to do with white slaves in Northern Africa. Free labor in the Americas is the focus. Post traumatic slavery disorder is a real thing. Many blacks will need a lot of cash to bounce back from this. Cash will work just fine.
