    The MD500 series of helicopters is my all time favorite. This model for MSFS is nothing short of spectacular! Solid modeling, beautiful texturing and an absolutely sublime flight model! Great job ‪@CowanSimulation‬ !

    I always thought it takes special skills to fly a helicopter in (any) flight simulator. And indeed, different skills are required. BUT. The main reason why the vast majority of sim pilots suck at helicopters has nothing to do with skill. It has to do with hardware. The core issue is the centering spring in joysticks and pedals. As soon as I tried my friend's Puma X (although he uses DCS only), I could easily and consistently perform tight spot landings, without bouncing up and down, moving left and right. Dedicated controls are a must if you are serious about helicopters. Sure, it is not impossible to fly them using a conventional joystick and pedals but it takes a lot of practice and patience, and might suggest that flying a helicopter is that hard when it is in fact not that hard. Different than a fixed wing, possibly even requires more focus but with proper hardware, it is so much easier than with your average centering joystick.

    • @Belatu42
      @Belatu42  Год назад +1

      I completely agree! A good controls setup like the Pro Flight Trainer Puma and VR make things much more like the real thing. Which for me, makes it easier to treat the sim like a different helicopter…but you can use what you have and make it work if you’re determined

    • @Belatu42
      @Belatu42  Год назад

      Keep practicing! The approaches are a balancing act of energy management with the collective. You initially have to reduce collective a lot to initiate descent, then as you start slowing below 40kts you start slowly pulling collective and power pedal back in anticipating the power required for hover as you exit ETL.

    I wonder if the cockpit also looks too big to you in VR. For me the instrument panel and pedals look weirdly far away like if I would not reach them and when I look down the seat looks quite big. As if the 3D Model would be 25% or so too big. I thought it might be the world scaling setting but changing it does not make it look more correct and in other aircrafts I don't have that feeling

    I can't get passed the left skid low behavior of all of the CowanSim products in the cruise right now. In X-Plane for example, you can fly at speed pretty much level in roll, and it's very obvious what pedal state you need. Here, you end up flying sideways regardless because there's an odd sensation due to hanging left like that. Minor for pattern work, general flight sim tom-foolery, but it becomes a nuisance when you try and use it to actually do something, in neofly for example. The default 407 is significantly worse and flues like hot garbage, so I commend Cowansim for their work. In the hover, they all make sense, and transition really well. Also, the lack of VRS and RBS is important for me as a simmer, because it allows me to be sure I'm not making any ridiculous errors. Something that when I first started with the dodosim back in the day became blatantly apparent when I first started flying in sims way back when.
    I really do love these helos. I just wish we had the best of all the worlds. The Dynamics in the cruise and the input delay of the FI (which feels to me the most like what I'm used to from X-Plane and DCS), and the behavior in HIGE you get with these Cowansim helos.
    I fear that Asobo/MS are uninterested in improving the flight model. So Cowansim's decision to go native may appeal to a lot of people but it makes me concerned that things either may not improve, or will cause the devs a major headache to work around and try and improve themselves. I think for me, as not a pilot, the FI helo has the most natural feeling flight model, coming from DCS/X-Plane. But then I hop in this or the A-Star and my opinion flips. The Cowan 206 was a bit of a let down for me but these two birds made up for it 10 fold.
    Long comment just to say, great video, I agree with most of what you said, (and I guess I should, seeing as how you're an actual pilot, and I'm just some pleb online) and I sincerely hope that things improve for these native birds.

    • @Belatu42
      @Belatu42  Год назад

      Good observations! Yeah, the cruise behavior needs work. It’s not that bad though, you have to ignore the slip indicator and rely on the sight picture and it cruises level. The FI helis have a control lag/delay that just isn’t realistic to me with my setup.
      It’s only been 6 months since helicopters have been officially supported in MSFS and XP12 just released. The future looks promising!

    CH Pedals you are using are self centering? Real anti torque pedals don't self center, correct ? I'm using G29 pedals throttle and clutch for anti torque. Its challenging to hold the left pedal in the correct position when landing. as they are spring loaded. Is this what you are doing with the CH Pedals ?

    • @Belatu42
      @Belatu42  2 месяца назад

      I use my CH pedals for fixed wing. I fly helicopters with a Pro-Flight Trainer Puma that does not have spring centering pedals. Before I had my PFT Puma though, I did use the CH pedals, but I cut off the heel cups so I could rest my feet on the floor. That way I could control them with my ankles and not my whole leg. The G29 pedals would be challenging, because they are not on the same axis like real aircraft pedals. When you push in left, it takes out right and vice versa. The CH Pro or Thrustmaster TFRP are the least expensive option out there, but Virpil VPC WarBRD would be a better option. The pro-flight-trainer.com/ is the best option for a full set of helicopter controls, but they are a bit more expensive.

      I have a 4th generation Puma that is upgraded from a Black Lynx. No curves, full linear.
      VR is almost as important as controls. You also need to have smooth performance in the sim. You won’t be able to pick up on the small attitude changes fast enough for fine control if it’s stuttering. No special adjustments, just turn your graphics/traffic settings down until it’s smooth.

    • @Belatu42
      @Belatu42  Год назад

      Do you mean applying collective pitch? Or pitching nose up with the cyclic? Rotor rpm may dip slightly when adding collective pitch, but the governor will respond with engine power to maintain the rpm. The added power increases the torque. As you pull up on the collective, torque increases. As you lower collective, torque decreases
