Looks like the valve is pretty easy to get to. An easy job for someone that has watched your video. Your effort will be appreciated by people in the future.
You`re a man of many talents, Dave. When you took the old servo off, I saw those o rings and thought to myself, I would replace them while it was off. Guess that`s the mechanic in me, lol. Nice video. Btw, they will be hard pressed to find someone to replace you!😊
Love the Channel Locks! I worked in a plant and like most the Mechanical divisions, they hated when the Operators fixed anything. Most of the night repairs where done by SR. Operators, We all carried Chanel Lock 420's and 440's. I have a pair of Big Azz 480's for when the Mechanics complained about rounded hexes. I showed the Plant Manager where Operators did repairs there were teeth marks on the flats of the hex and where the mechanics rounded the hexes off with Adjustable Crescent wrenches.
So.. These new cars HAVE to be calibrated with the crazy stuff. Lucky you... Guess it is drag using older or a blessing having things you don't have to wait days for a kid with a computer to recalibrate a simple soulinoud. Thanks for the lesson!
As I've said before, you're a man of many talents Dave! Now I just need to find a tamper to practice on 🙂 You always have something interesting to share with us. Keep them rolling!
Good troubleshooting on that photo receiver, Dave! It's too bad they don't offer service kits for them anymore and they are just exchange cores now. Hopefully you can get that swapped out so you don't have to rob Peter to pay Paul as it were to keep that tamper up and working.
I told AI of your story and AI was very moved, so much so that AI wrote a poem for you; I also hear _I can't tamp_ might be Garth Brooks newest hit single on the billboard top 100 country and western songs right now. 🎵🎼🎶I Can't Tamp! 🎶🎵🎼 The machine is silent, its gears are still, Stranded here on this rolling hill. The ballast sinks, the rails untrue, A perfect ride, now overdue. I can’t tamp! The engine’s failed, The levers stiff, the effort derailed. I kick the dust, I curse the grind, No fix in sight, no peace of mind. The train awaits, its whistle near, But crooked tracks spark doubt and fear. With tools in hand, I'll make a stand- But without the machine, it’s a battle unplanned.
Awesome awesome awesome David! Loved it. For those of you guys reading this David has a really cool YT channel Opies Home Shop where he does all this neat stuff working in his shop. David is like me, we are both perfectionists and want the job done right. He is a very skilled machinist. I watch every video he makes. Check out his channel at: www.youtube.com/@opieshomeshop
MOOG they are in Hamberg NY! a person went from dupont to moog Co. their controllers are well designed and durable. great education with your past videos!
As always I enjoyed your show,Dave have you been to tunnel hill road just a few miles out of Waynesburg Pa,thats an awesome site to watch a train out of the tunnel😊,I've covered all Southern pa,watching trains 1996 to 2012,I'd like to watch trains whenever it's warms up, ok,I'll catch ya on the next one. 😊
I'll just go ahead and call BS Dave on "the guy that replaces me?" The company will prop you up on a corner somewhere before they will try to replace you!
Excellent idea Clarence, No on keeps maintenance records here on anything.... sigh, but I have always kept a log book or maintenance and problems and what we did to fix them for the tamper. But never thought about putting in links to videos on how to fix the tamper. That would be extremely valuable for the tamper operator years from now. Thanks so much for the great advice my friend! I will definitely start doing that.
Nice, Industrial grade equipment I love Canon connectors used on military, aviation and industrial equipment, stainless steel Allen head bolts nothing but the best. Then you lift the hood on your automobile junk plastic connectors that corrode. The difference between industrial and consumer products.
As many times before, time to go to bed but resisting Your new video, putting it on hold, doesn't work. Go on looking.... You did just great, changing the valve unit and figuring out the "box problem". September 29 I drove the 2 unit railcar train and uploaded videos. The train ran like a clock. The week later another guy was driving and ran into problems with the after car, the one without engine, and it was disconnected. The passenger capacity then dropped to half. Doubled trips solved the situation for the passengers booking and paying in september!. Talking to our 76 year old train mechanic guy a few theories were thought of. The brushes in the alternator might be worn out. 1000 hours was the limit on the railroads. The signal cable contacts between the units might have oxidated..... Work to do...... 2023 I got a covid looking attack and had to cancel driving. The guy stepping in faced the same problem and dropped one unit. At that time they found lose cable connections at the trailer battery.... Driving this train for 11 years without worse mishaps than a wiper spinning on its axle, I wonder what's going on. Aging? Chers Dave!
Busted..... sure wish they would supply me with a proper holder for that extinguisher but I don't have one pethuthutpet. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
As Rosana Dana says.. "It's always something." Electric over hydraulic sure can be fun...(NOT) Question.. And I feel you of all the RR channels I watch will have the answer.. Why it it a requirement that a locomotive have the letter "F" on the front. Usually right beside the fwd steps?? Many folks know it has to be there but nobody seems to know why. Any idea on this~~~~~ 🤷 Thanks Dave..
Thanks for the vote of confidence. You are right it is a requirement that the F end be labeled Jon. My thoughts are, not all locos have the short nose as forward, some actually do have the long nose as being forward. Traction motors are numbered as being 1 thru 6 (on 3 axle trucks) from the front of the loco to the back. So if there is a problem with a traction motor and it needs to be cut out, the engineer can know which motor it is to cut out the right one. But that is my guess. if you come up with a better answer, please let me know. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
I suspected that your Allen wrench didn’t fall to the ballast. I’m glad you found it. Great video. 😊
Dave, it's so important that you show that there's so much more to railroad operations than just pulling the throttle and blowing the whistle.
That looks like a very complicated machine to operate and repair. You are a very valuable worker for your company, thank you for sharing Dave!
Great repair Dave, at least it was an easy part ti get to and wasn't burieddeep inside something.. glad you found your wrench..

Agreed, while it off, all gasket type items should be replaced. Cheap insurance.
Now go find your Allen wrench😅
Howdy Dave
Merry Christmas
Stay safely blessed
