When dame Edna began to make it big on international tv many of the American stars just couldn’t understand all the Australian turns of phrase and emphasis that dame Edna has in her voice but that’s part of her humour is the phrasing, her intonation and Aussie accent. The way she rolls her eyes or screws up her mouth. It’s very Australian. So barbed and cruel in many ways. Aussies love that. They don’t take anyone seriously, least of all “stars”, politicians or leaders. So the big American stars are often mystified as to why everyone else is laughing with the Dame and not bowing down to them, which they seem to imagine is what a chat show is about! Silly them!!!! American humour isn’t about the laconic or the ironic as British and Aussie humour is. Americans are more slapstick and not about self-deprecation. You’ll Notice some of the dame’s early shows in the states on chat shows with people like George Hamilton just went over his head as do her jokes here with Richard Gere. But I find watching Gere dumbfounded here quite cringey. He’s so tortured and uncomfortable because Edna is pricking his big fat Hollywood ego endlessly. Which is the whole point of comedy. In this case: old Hollywood in Bacall versus new Hollywood in Gere. Old Hollywood types were so much more exposed in their training to the traditions of musical theatre, slapstick, vaudeville, camp and pantomime to which Humphries belonged.
