The Convenience Store | 夜勤事件 is a J-horror game about a college girl on a night shift.
Immersive experience: An atmospheric, photo-realistic graphics intensifies the horror experience.
VHS film aesthetic: VHS aesthetic emulates look and feel of CRT screens including phosphor screen trail and bleeding, VHS tape noise, interlacing, and jitter in the analog video signal adding extra immersion to the horror experience.
Gameplay: This game is primarily a "walking simulator" genre with puzzle-solving elements.
Psychological horror: The game will drive you insane.
Japanese Theme: Environment art inspired by Japanese horror films.
2 endings: There are good and bad.
The Convenience Store | 夜勤事件 is a short game. The game is about 40 minutes long.
VHS effects can be turned off in the options menu.

The noise outside was cicadas! They are super loud in the US but apparently even louder in Japan. Apparently England only has one species of Cicada and it's only found in one wildlife park and they are endangered where you are....

@@thenorthstarsamurai I can relate! They can get pretty loud in the US! Honestly, they scare me lol. There was one just sitting on my front door one night and Everytime I'd try to go for the handle, it would tell at me. Ever since then, they freak me out

As someone who actually works in a convenience store, most customers are that rude, also there are often spirits that knock stuff off shelves....its more of a hassle at this point.
My gf works as a floater pharmacist, and has definitely seen a lot of temper tantrums- including violent ones. Too many Karens and man children out there

That was pretty cool. I even liked "Convenience Store Simulator"; made up for the lack of an arcade machine :-) . Also pretty cool that it was *_so_* uneventful that of _course_ you watched the tapes, even though that was a bad idea. Interesting enough that I would play through it a couple times to see the results of 1) not watching the tapes at all (indeed never even accepting the first one); 2) throwing the last tape away; or 3) sending the tape to "someone else" (like who? and who sent this one to me? the manager clearly watched all of them so it wasn't him). Anyway, a pleasant hour-- thanks, Chris!

A place you know well + J horror = The best sense of creeping dread in a familiar location
The game started slow, but its got a nice buildup. I liked it.
From how I understood it, its almost like The Ring, except this one gave you a choice on the 4th day, instead of branding the person the 7-day tenure to live. The more you watch the tapes on each day, the more you're inviting the spirit to overcome you. Also, the #4 for the Japanese ("shi"), when it comes to these situations, alludes to death. Hence, the 4 nights, 4 TVs, the Channel 4 on the CCTV, and the huge red 4 you found with the dead manager.
"Deliberately checking in a video game just to make whether or not his character accidentally left the stove on before leaving their house." My dudes responsible and notices details, makes this all the more immersive. Nice!

I came home after the dullest evening with some friends and decided to watch this, my mood has greatly improved. Slow but fun little game with good jumpscares (my laptop almost fell off my knees twice - the colleague jumpscare and the ghost in the CCTV one), as always greatly improved by your funny commentary. I had this game on my wishlist for a while and finally got it today - played it right away as I really wanted to watch your playthrough of it. I actually really like this game, great atmosphere. The coworker/locker bit was both terrifying and hilarious! I'm now wishing there was just a customer service simulator so we could listen to you complain about endless horrid customers - so funny!

Seems like this was based off The Ring and The Grudge a bit. You have the tapes part and then you have the horrible things that happened to the lady and her son making them malicious spirits (if you do the ending that sends the tape to someone else you find out what happened to them). I liked the game in the end, though wish some more creepy stuff happened earlier like when you have to walk from her house to the store or when you got locked in rooms, etc. Hope you get better soon Cju!

Cicadas don't chirp unless its very warm, so its unlikely that they'd be making noise at night-time.
While they don't normally make that much noise at night, that is what those sounds are. xD

I've been to Japan. It definitely has parts that look just like the neighborhood. And they also have a 7/11 and Lawsons on like EVERY corner
This is my 2nd time watching this. I really hope there's more indie games out there similar to this for you to play. Something about doing a repetitive, boring job with increasingly spooky things happening is unusually entertaining to me.

Can't tell what this story was all about but it was quite nice and interesting. Poor old lady...not only that she is foot sick and demented now she is also blinded by your flashlight... very sad.
Slow burns are the best burns. What a creepy and interesting game! Will you play the other endings? I'm also gonna recommend the Rusty Lake and Cube Escape series one more time! I really think you'd enjoy the puzzles and the crazy plots.

If I were to have any voice in this world there’s no doubt I’d take his.
I greatly enjoyed that game! All of my favourite horror movies are Japanese, and this has that vibe that I love where things just creep up on you until you're neck deep in horror. Very cool.

I worked at a Japanese convenience store for 6 years and I can tell you this is 100% accurate. Also 4 in Japanese is pronounced "shi" which carries the double meaning of "death", kanji is different tho.

I kinda dig how weird and uncanny these high resolution photo textures are on the assets for this game, not ps1 style per say, but I thinks its worth exploring, the humans are offputtin in just the right ways.
I'm pretty sure the manager was secretly videotaping her at home across the street from the window. He was watching the tapes in that little room. There's a VHS recorder/player and the number 4 means death in several Asian languages. The implication is that she's not the first employee he did this too.
Only 2 endings, and I do encourage you to mail the tape or look up someone else's play through. We actually learn a few things.
Nice night shift mall simulator. Spooky things are typical whoever stood on a night shift duty. I'm sure that encounters with poltergeists and disfigured creepy figures are normal in this line of job :)

Been to Japan, they (usually teens/kids) still steal just like everywhere else. I think mainly is, police don’t do anything if it does happen, that includes groping too. :/

Nah, *shop lifting occurs frequently in Japan too.* Especially so in convenience stores. And police don't carry guns. In fear of their own safety(perhaps) they often slack on their job.
Plus, their legal system sucks. Murder, molestation, suicide, mugging, etc. Don't count on getting an ounce of justice over there. This could be a big part as to why so many citizens commit suicide.
I really liked this!! it didn't feel dull at all though it took some time to get going, with the different tasks you had to do and different people you interacted with. the scares were really good, and the creepy parts reaaally spooky. I'm guessing not watching any of the tapes isn't an option, so the choice only comes down to the fourth night? I'm curious about the other routes, but I'm very glad you chose the bad ending, because it is a truly terrifying one.
