Awesome and thanks for showing it can be started in just one place for low and slow and will spread. I tend to try to light the whole bed, not trusting it to spread otherwise, and then I get a spike and it takes forever to get it back down into the low range. I probably waste fuel my way too.
THANK YOU!!!! This is a fantastic video! I've had my Akron for a year now and still struggle with technique on heat management (I was using a chimney lol). Very well done. Great info!
I'm late to the show but thanks for the video. I went and got a pellet smoker because I was having such a hard time with controlling the temp on my akorn...can't wait to try this technique. And love your sweatshirt too!
It looked like only the coals in the center were activated. Will the others activate if you cook long enough? How do you make sure the first coals don't just burn out?
They won’t, once they go white it’ll slowly keep speeding throughout the cook. That’s what you want to happen for low n slow. Some people use the snake method or use a paint can with both ends removed to create a void in the centre to pour hot coals into. It’s really hard to stop these things once they get going.
im debating on buying one of these very soon, possibly today. How long of a cook can you do un touched? like Would it be good to cook brisket on? Also is this the 20" model?
Thank you for this video. It helps a lot. I am awaiting delivery of my Akorn. I want to smoke some salmon., Can I do the same low temp cook at 150 deg F? Will it hold the temp that low? I need to do an hour at 150 then an hour or so at 180 till the internal temp is 150. Thanks for any advice you have.
This smoker, not any smoker that I’m aware of, is capable of holding temps at 150. Fairly confident the lowest temp you can reasonably hold without killing the fire is about 225ish on this akorn grill
I always just put a bunch of charcoal so I don't have to add any during the cook. Once the cook is finished, i'll close up the vents so the fire goes out and i'll use that charcoal next time.
Why. It has numbers on the vents. Why would you say anything but the number that is listed there? Slightly open? = there are numbers. So is it a 1 top 1 bottom?

Hey Rob, love your channel. Can you post some of your vent settings for temperature control

Snake method works awsome too.

Have you started your boat project yet?
I have - got the motor started with a new plug... May take it to the lake tomorrow to test it out before I redo the deck, etc :)
@@RobsBackyardBBQ cool. Have fun!
