  • Over the last few months, I've been making the switch from smart speakers and sound bars to a dedicated HiFi system.
I don't have a large budget so my initial choice for speakers were the Wharfedale Diamond 9.1's which were highly rated when first released. However, I opted for the Cambridge Audio SX-60's instead.
I've managed to get hold of some Wharfedale Diamond 9.1's so I can now compare the two to see if I made the right choice?

I personally prefer the sound of the Wharfedales they sound much more present and full. I've always admired Wharfedale for how their speakers punch above their weight. I owed a pair of the Programme 30D.6 a few years back and I was blown away.

I own a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 and I love them. But I agree with you about the SX-60; I put my headphones on, closed my eyes and I heard the difference. The SX-60 are more opened, clear and musical. But I paid $80 Cnd for the 9.1 so I cannot be sad about it.

Hello, I own the Diamond 10.1 and really like it. It's exactly the sound I expect and am happy with. I run it on a tube amplifier with 2x8 watts and it plays really great. Thanks for the comparison.

Good video, man. Depending on room size, room dynamic and how much furniture you have in the room an greatly effect the sound quality. I have a modest living space and my Wharfedale 7diamond speakers are absolutely great in this environment.

Just picked up an older pair of Warfdale Diamond4s today, so I was hoping the newer version of the Warfdales would win the day. But I could hear more highs and lows from the Cambridge Audio speakers. But I really liked the overall sound of the Warfdales and suspect that they might prove easier to live with streaming Baroque all day. I’m not at all unhappy I got them, and an not expecting nor concerned about the lows because I’ve got a sub. If the highs are pleasant and not fatiguing then they are just the fright size in my listening space. Thanks for the demo!

Like the 9.1 for the punchy bass, Cambridge Audio was more precise in the classical music but the bass is muddier in everything else. They are very close. Id prefer the Dales for my type of music

Great video thanks and a great way to compare the two. I admittedly only heard the comparison through my mobile phone, but I thought the Cambridge like yourself had the edge in sound quality. The top end sounded virtually identical but the Cambridge speakers had a slightly fuller sound and sounded slightly louder too, probably due to their higher sensitivity. Both sounded fun and they had great presence. I don't think you could go wrong with either speakers for the money.

  • @DougMen1
    @DougMen1 3 года назад +22

I thought the Wharfies sounded fuller, and the Cambridge has more highs, but also sounds thinner to me on the popular songs, bur on the classical the Cambridge sounded more natural and realistic and had better tonal balance and soundstage, while the Diamonds sounded more shut-in and congested.

Really enjoyed your review. I’ve just bought a pair of the Wharfedale’s and they are competing in my home with B&W 601 S3’s which are epic. The B&Ws just pip the Wharfedale’s BUT there is a significant price differential (B&Ws are dearer) but for the price the Wharfedale’s are brilliant, so I would deffo recommend the them.

I listened to your video as I'm looking for a pair of bookshelf speakers for my daughter's home. Somehow, I thought that the Wharfedale's had a slightly punchier with more base. Something you mentioned as well for speakers that were an earlier design as well as smaller. I definitely felt it was punchier, I prefer. If I were to look at the value proposition, my opinion again, the Wharfedale's are ahead at almost 50% of the cost of Cambridge Audio. I'll go for the Wharfedale's for sure.

Hi again from Southold NY USA
First of all, I really enjoy the way you do your test. I am Listening to the audio on my iPad tonight and I found my mini Sony headphones.. They sounded real close, but the Cambridge SX60 sounded a bit smoother. There was an edge to the wharfdale’s compared to the Cambridge that crept through. As of today, 12/23/2021 , I cannot find any Wharfdale Diamond 9.1’s left for sale, 10.1 and 12.1 are out there, but their price is a lot higher now. Thanks for the comparison, most reviewers stay away from doing that for a number of valid reasons, but you did a good job!

Nice video, thx. Currently, the 9.1's are £99 vs £199 for the Cambridge Audios. The sound quality, to my ears, was comparable on both. Maybe the 9.1's sounding a little brighter. But, for the vfm. the 9.1's take it for me.

I heard the fuller sound over this recording - as an owner of 9.1 in a flat I'm happy with them as i love the appearance and curved caninet they're the mist ageless book shelf speaker imo but for sure those Cambridge look a great buy even at twice the price

I've eyeing a set Whafedales 9.1's 5.1 surround sound speakers for a while now. One thing did strike me was how sharp the Whafedales sounded. The Cambridge's seemed to fill the room better as you said but I don't know how but they sounded kind of slow compared to the Whafedales.

I like Wharfedale , maybe biased cause I'm listening it through Wharfedale 9.2 hahah. The sound on Wharfedale is more unified be it high mid and low, while in CA I can hear the highs separated from the rest. 8:37 Agree, that wharfedale bass is good, it can produce really low sound without distortion, the bass is there we can listen to it, but yea it's not a subwoofer where we can hear and FEEL the bass, whereas on that we can hear it but can't feel it.
Oh and the Wharfedale shape is pleasant to see than a just boxy shape hahah.

there's better bass response from the 9.1s; if I couldn't use a sub they would be my choice. listening through YT it's difficult to ascertain your claims about soundstage and the like in the SX-60. there is definitely more treble response from them and I would feel confident using a sub with them since a sub will (hopefully) balance out any possible treble "brilliance".

9.1's sound well over their size, but imho comapring to SX60's lacking mids a bit. In some music genres (electro, dance etc) may sound better, but in rock music (guitars) I would go for CA. This obviously is only based in YT clip listened on good headphones. In some cases Wharfedales can be a safer choice as they can be less fatiguing that CA's

If you want to hear what your favourite music sounds like, use a good set of head-phones. Then choose cabinet speakers based on that.
Warning. Prepare to spend a few thousand dollars trying to match them. The wharfedales are too tight for bass and will fall apart if the sound
is accidentally set too high. This is their downfall. But luckily they are repairable. With a small modification, they would work much better.
The cambridge is the better set. Better reproduction of sound. Most cabinet speakers will only suit certain types of music.

I feel like this comparison is flawed. The drivers are different size, the Cambridge sounds more open and spacious but could be because of port / driver / cabinet size. Also the Cambridge audio speakers are double the price. I feel like the SX-60 sound more mid forward and more sibilant. The wharfedale 9.1 have more laid back and smoother top end but less detail however sound more cohesive across the frequency spectrum.
It’s a hard one to decide, comes down to preference. Which I prefer wharfedale for the best bang for buck. The Cambridge audios are fantastic but compare them with Wharfedale Diamond 121 at £150 I feel like the Wharfedale wins

Both pairs are great. I thought the Wharfedales were definitely as good on bass, but the SX-60 were better overall, especially at top end which is no real surprise considering their frequency range.
What is the rest of your system? I use a Cambridge Audio CXN v2 through a CXA80 amp and SX-50 speakers (my wife wont let me get bigger speakers) and overall it sounds fab.

I now have a marantz pm6007, cd6007 and Dali Oberon 5 speakers. The Dali's actually had my wife's approval as they're quite small for a floor stander but put out great sound.

24000 kHz and 22000 kHz ??!! I am sure you meant 24 kHz and 22 kHz unless your speakers can be used for ultrasound applications for frequencies of 24 mHz and 22 mHz !!
