It's always a pleasure to listen to Iain explaining how things work, regardless of whether I already knew it or not. The point about reinventing the wheel every time also applies to the Italian car industry. South of the Alps, we could definitely have used more of that patient, methodical refinement approach that has served the Germans so well.

Its a bit simplistic attributing refinement under the country banner. The VW Beetle and Ferrari stories is a direct contradiction to this theory. Lamborghini, Toyota, Honda, Nissan...

Base, manual 968 coupes are the real bargain nowadays! Everything but some of the weight savings and suspension parts are identical to the CS, but they are much cheaper today. With some fresh Bilsteins and Michelins, it will drive just as well tough.

The problem is a cheap 968 will most likely be a cabriolet.

I have a 1988 924S. So same basic suspension set up as this. It was the last UK press car so has Sports suspension, thicker anti roll bars and it’s lowered a bit from factory.
The handling is incredible and every time I drive it I smile like you did in this video. On rails as you described is spot on.
You can push it and push it and it eventually judders a bit at the back end to tell you enough is enough. The best handling car I’ve ever driven by far. I bought it to do up and sell but 20 mins into a drive to my workshop I knew I’d never part with it!

As a passionate aircooled Porsche fan and owner, I will say the 968 CS is the one watercooled I would love to have. Its styling, the jettison of creature comforts, and the improved performance and handling seems like it would be such a fun car to drive.

Iain, you did a great job describing the German psyche. I'm American yet I have family in Rheinland Pfalz in Germany, so I understand the German psyche (which is also my psyche). The German psyche is to evolve technology. It can be summed up in German "Deutsch gemacht--alles in Ordnung" --German engineered, everything in order.

Makes me miss my old 1985.5 944, I went through that car front to back and it drove and rode like new, even the shifter linkage was tight after I put some flat model helicopter bearings on the rod-to-lever pin. It was just so lovely and balanced. Never left me stranded, pretty nice to work on and would just keep accelerating because of the low drag. And it looked stunning on its larger polished aluminium 16 inch turbo teledials

That’s my old car !! Had it for several years , about 2 years ago. It has a fantastic service history and file of work done , it was a bit of a mess when I got it, nice to see my clean engine bay is still shiny😂. I put it through a classic auction and despite the letter from Porsche and a few other bits of proof, the consensus was it actually isn’t a club sport !! It’s just a Sport lux, without a rear wiper, with elec widows and rear seats, it’s right on the change year. I replaced the stickers and rear badge and put black Ppf on the leading edges of the wings and sills to protect against stone chips . Loved that car, used it hard , it drove so well and never let me down. Polished it to death , if I remember right the paint is a bit thin on the front passenger wing and under the door handle . I has the worlds largest 4 cylinder production engine , it’s a 3ltr .
Lovely to see it again , gone some great pics of it somewhere . Sorry to say it’s not a true Club Sport , but no one really knows, enjoy it

My father in law had a std black 968 back in the early 90s but I didn't give it a second look as I didn't like the styling much. I think its grown on me in the meantime as a bit of a 944/928 hybrid but really I prefer the 944/928 look separated into distinct cars rather than blended. I have both 944 Silver Rose and 928GT in my garage, neither garage queens but well used and well maintained. It would be great to try a 968 for comparison, even seeing one these days is super rare. Thanks for the interesting video

Hi, So Porsche made 1538 CS of which 179 were delivered to the UK as Club Sports and another 306 were delivered as "P35 CS Luxury Package" and badged as the 968 Sport by Porsche Cars GB . You can tell the difference on the build sheets as the Sports are all listed as P35 and have electric windows and were only available in model years 1994/1995 when rear seats were added to the options list. It wasn't possible to order a "Club Sport" with electric windows in the UK. This car was originally registered as a 968 Sport (I test drove it for a perspective owner around 10 years ago). So there were actually only around 1232 Club Sports and 306 Sports but they all left the factory as CS's originally. I hope this helps and happy to answer any questions on the model.

When Iain digresses, I listen with awe. Departures into affiliated trivia enrich the monologue and enlarge the education. Not entirely happy with the "wheezy" slights on the 924 though, but I can have my cake and eat it- my NA 924 is a good daily driver and my two children both learned to drive in it. Paired with our 924 Turbo, it holds a place in my heart as my first classic and will be staying. The 968 destined to be like the 964 in my opinion.

I've always looked at the 924/944/968 with a little bit of disdain...until a friend lent me his 968 for a couple of weeks. The engine has some grunt. It's not exceptional but it has some grunt. And the chassis feels both precise and light on its toes. Overall a very balanced and endearing engine/chassis combo whereas many classic cars tend to have a chassis *or* an engine but not a sweet combination like this.
I'd love to try the very rare turbo variant boosting power from 240 to 305.

Porsche elected to use a balance shaft system on the 944 to 'subdue' to the unbalanced secondary forces generated by an in-line four cylinder - which become 'notable' as the capacity (and hence recipricating mass) of the engine increases. Whilst the balance shaft system was actually invented by the Englishman Frederick Lanchester in 1907, Mitsubishi developed and patented their own version called the 'Silent Shaft' in 1976.
Porsche did develop their own balance shaft system for the 944 however, Porsche discovered that the Mitsubishi system was a superior solution. Consequently, Porsche paid Mitsubishi a royalty of circa $US 6 to 8 per car to use Mitsubishi's 'Silent Shaft' for their large capacity 4 cyl engines - i.e. the 944 and 968 Porsche cars.

Your point on the slop in the gear linkage, I have an "Only 944" short shift linkage in my car, they might do the same type of kit for the 968; it certainly makes a big difference.

Two different vehicles: I owned a USA version of the 924. It had decent air conditioning and a better two-place rear compartment. Under the glass hatch, there was enough space for us to store whatever gear we needed for backpacking! It was canary yellow and my 9 and 10-year-old sons loved it. It DID have fine dry-road handling, with the rear suspension doing amazing things. The engine was so noisy that I had to put a power-boosting amplifier in it to listen to music on my typical two-hour drives to see my family on the weekends. One example: my employer's mistress chose to ride in this car to an event rather than in his Lincoln. Fortunately, the engine noise trumped her curiosity and she was happy to ride in his Lincoln on the way back.

With the 924 being very much a 'parts bin car', the earliest 924's suspension consisted of most of the parts from the 1303 Beetle. There were some differences but many of the parts interchange. As Porsche developed the 924, with changes like 4 wheel / 5 stud disc brakes for the turbo, these parts can easily be used to upgrade 1303 Beetles - they pretty much bolt on. The 1303 front suspension was in turn developed from the 1302 - the first Beetle with McPherson Struts in 1970. The rear suspension dates back to the 1968 semi-automatic VW Type 3, which was used in semi auto Beetles around the same time, then later in many manual Beetle models too. So the 968's suspension development history goes back quite a few years more than the 924.

All the 968 versions were 3.0. The last of the 944 s2 was also a 3.0. Great engines these, better on a track than the 2.5 turbos due to no lag, loads of linear power and big power at high revs due to variable valve timing. Owned all variants inc a 968 M030 CS non lux. One of these with a fast road/track geo setup is a wonderful thing 😎, one with a poor geo set up will have you if not careful! 👹

Audi 5 cylinder lovely sounding engine agree, but as they were all at that time cast iron blocks, whereas the 944 was a full alloy engine not even cast iron liners, the extra weight would have ruined the front balance and turn-in, probably increasing understeer. A German law from 1976 that requires companies of over 2000 employees to have half the supervisory board of directors as representatives of workers, and just under half the votes. Imagine suggesting that here - you'd be accused of being a communist or something.

A little over 10 years ago a mate purchased a white 968 CS in Sydney ( Australia )( RHD of course) and was very busy with his business at the time. Knowing I was on holidays at the time he asked me if I could fly there and drive the car back to Melbourne for him.
I drove from Sydney to Canberra and from there headed up over the Snowy Mountains on the winding mountain roads and back to Melbourne. What a car. Completely in it's element. A trip I will never forget.

Great video! Sport and Clubsport variants are both excellent; well they’re both from the Clubsport line. This particular car is well known in 968 circles and is 1 of 306 special order Sports (Porsche GB ordered them) and not 1 of 179 C16 CS cars. Still a very rare car. Rather than bring snobbery though, the issue is that the market values Sports and CSs differently and if a car is being passed off as a 1 of 179 CS to up its perceived value, then that’s naughty and as ever, Caveat Emptor. The Lux pack is a misnomer. It wasn’t an option on the CS in the UK, though was in Europe. The Sport is the equivalent and because it came from the same production line, will doubtless have the Porsche certificate of authenticity that it has a CS VIN number, which it will. But it’s still a special order Sport.

What is ironic that 968 Club Sport was the cheapest one available in the whole range of 968. Now Porsche charges more for removing things. And let's not even start how expensive 964 and 933 RS models are now. Let's just say they are insanely expensive and leave it at that. 968 CS is probably 1/10 of their price... and it's rarer. Crazy investment potential in this model, imho.
