That's the great thing about opinions, everyone has one, but only mine is right! 😇(just funnin' ya) Anyhoo, I just can't agree that "He (Carl Reiner) was a great comedy actor!" He is a great writer and creator, but IMHO Carl is merely a fair to middling comedy actor, but certainly not a "great" one. - (But then again, what do I know? 😏)
I am an artist and I have torn up one of my paintings because the people that wanted it would not pay me for it. They thought I would give it to them for Free…..cheap cheap people they were!!!
Carl Reiner was brilliant as the egomanical artist, Sergei Karpetna. Nice to see him as someone other than the egomaniacal, tyrannical Alan Brady. In real life, Carl Reiner was a sweet, lovely man. Nothing like Karpetna, or Brady. Anyway, this was a great episode of the DVD Show.
It's funny how they tried so hard to make this family friendly yet me, as a naive 9-11 year old watching this for the first time, I knew it was about a nude painting lol
Since Persky and Denoff also did "That Girl", I wonder if they took this story and adapted it for the episode of "That Girl" where Ann shows up in a Playboy type magazine but it was only Ann's head because the body belonged to someone else?
I love this episode (especially that great two line exchange: LAURA: "Sally, if it's the one I think it is, I can explain." SALLY: "If you have to explain, it's the one you think it is."). However, it's incredible how hung up Americans were on things like this back then. (Rob and Laura wouldn't bat an eye if they saw nude studies of the female figure by Goya or Renoir or Rubens in a museum.) It all puts me in mind of that old joke: "God hates nudity. If He didn't, we would all have been born naked."
Yes but laura in the episode was still alive and a member of a very tight knit community filled with gossipy chickens, the pta, clubs, etc!! To survive socially you had to be squeaky clean!!
Umm I'm pretty sure if someone painted a person nude without their permission they'd still be upset today. Also it's different seeing a nude of someone dead and gone years ago then your own mother/father/husband/wife
Adam and Eve were covered with the Glory of God. That's why they didn't know they were naked, until they disobeyed God and the Glory was no longer covering them.
At ~4:06: Check out the painting in the upper right-hand corner of the screen; Doesn't that look a whole lot like 'Milly Helper'? - Also, That $50.00 that Rob and Laura paid for that painting of Laura in 1964 is worth approximately $485.00 today! 😲No small sum for a young married couple. More insane than that is the asking price of $5,000 in 1964 is now approximately $50,000.00 in today's nearly-worthless dollars! 🙄
They refer to the painting having been done when they first came to NY. The show's strong suit was not consistency, but Richie was definitely born in NY, and he was born in 1956-ish. So the painting would have been done in 1954-ish, as Laura was not yet pregnant.
@@MrMenefrego1No Lol. Rob and Laura weren't newly wed in 1964. They married sometime in 1958 or 56. If Richie was around ten years old (in this season) Also, in one episode, the one where Rob tells the story of Richie's birth, He said that he and Laura were married one year before Richie was born. So $50 in 1958 would have been like paying $522. Or if they married in 1956, it would have been like paying $553.
Or, I think Richie was 8 years old. Not ten. But anyway, I think that's what Great pretender meant about the painting would have cost more than $485 buying power.
Isaac Field, Welcome to reality. Before the disgusting 21st century, people had more than a modicum of modesty and humility. Today, even average people are effectively porn stars!
I don’t think it’s so much that they were squeamish about nudity. It’s rather that Rob doesn’t want to share his wife with the entire world, and Laura knows he doesn’t.
Robs delayed rage was hysterical perfection!! 😂 😂 😂!!!
Yes--I now understand why my Dad did such inexplicable things just not to kill us!! 🥰
Really miss shows of this caliber.
Great cast and wholesome fun.
It's called the Golden Age of Television for a good reason.
Beautifully put!
7:20---"would Sally call and tell me that". Best line in the show, even the audience had to give it up for that one............
Nice touch in changing the artist's easel from a standard tripod type of the earlier era to a more modern H frame years later.
I didn't notice that.
My gosh, I didn't catch that!
That’s one versatile artist-Rembrandt, Jackson Pollack, and Picasso all in one.
Carl did a great accent. He was a great comedy actor!

I agree. My favorite episodes are the ones with Carl. He's hilarious.

I agree . His pilot for the D.V.D. show proves your point .
I love the episodes he’s in, he steals the show.

2:17 and 7:17- 2 of the greatest set ups and payoff lines ever. This show is spectacular.
This is one of the best.
One of my favorites.
97! Happy Birthday
You mean Dick van Dyke?
They were so perfect together. Just realized season and episode…my birthday! 3/28. 😃
Mine is 3/24; what year were you born?

Great title, October Eve for a portrait of a dark haired beautiful model.

this is the best episode!
Beyond the best! 😉
This was a good one.

You could look it up ... They have some great resources on this new-fangled thingie called 'The Internet'. 😏😁
You have a point there, Coco.
When the tv show That Girl had lyrics in it's the song it was catchy.
They weren't shy about reusing story lines from this and I Love Lucy.
Writers always borrow from previous episodes.
That painter is Carl Reiner, who also plays Alan Brady
You've got to be kidding?!
No he isn't kidding. That is none other than Carl Reiner. He was a great comedic actor. 😉😂

I did a comment similar to that.

Looks a lot like Bob Elliot (of Bob and Ray) at 4:30.

Alan Brady the painter!!!
october eve would be $49K now.
@13:00 actually little to the imagination with that blouse!
"October Eve" Is he calling Laura old? Even if it was painted when she was a newly-wed?
If people can name 📛 a better tv show with an group cast better then this show. Let me know.
Cheers and All in the Family do come close:-)
Not better, but in the same category: "Keeping Up Appearances" (British)
Barney Miller isn't bad either
A time that Carl Reiner that was in a episode not 🚫 being Alan Brady.
He played a non Alan Brady role before this episode
Notice how the artist disparages Alan Brad, a nice meta-ironic touch.
So I'm guessing Sergey painted Laura's head on a nude body.
What a strange way for Laura to pose the first time. It looks stupid.
Imagine her nude in that position. Get the "picture"?
Undraping Means Nude/ Naked And The Man Made A Nude Or Not Nude Maybe Photo Of Laura Meeken/Petrie
Eating dinner at home with a sports coat and tie on. Unrealistic
So what? Try watching just about any TV show & it'll have unrealistic scenes somewhere in it.
@ unrealistic scenes are asinine.
Were they virgins when they married? Acting rather childish about the whole thing.
The questions would be : "were they married when they were virgins?"
People acted more like this throughout eons of mankind than they acted since the late 60s.
