I used to think this guy slows down (because he's not good enough to hear himself slow down) when he has faster bass drum rhythms....then as I listened to more jazz music I realized he's just being jazz drummer/solid musician and plays for gretchen parlato....he's doing it on freaking purpose, which simply means he's a genius. Love this guy

Standard: metrum is the master - the drummer is servant. But here we have truly a revolution: metrum is servant and drummer is master. Guiliana is a hero no matter you like it or not.

the "opening up" of the groove around 9:00 is delicious before it goes back to "triple time"...whatever other people say...this is absolute masterful playing...taylor is one of the great young cats..this band with kendrick scott on drums blew my mind at Monterey Jazz 2010

Lots of people bashing the solo on here. Look closely though, it's motivic development. Listen to the beat/motif he plays at the beginning. He then builds upon it using orchestration/dynamics/subdivision/etc. Don't overthink it. (look at similarities at beginning and then at like 3:15)

The perma-smile on Taylor's face during his whole solo is arguably my favorite part of this video, dude had the serious Cedar Walton bounce on a bunch of those licks and he knew it

When someone steps outside your aesthetic criteria you have a choice. It's strange that many seem to go hostile, instead of staying open and checking it out like a musician or anyone on the path.

I don't know what it is that you've done to me
But it's caused me to act in such a crazy way
Whatever it is that you do when you do what you're doing
    It's a feeling I wanna stay
Time after time after time I try to fight it
But your love is strong and keeps on holding on
Resistance down when you're around pride's fading
My condition I don't wanna be alone
Cause my heart starts beating triple time
With thoughts of loving you on my mind
Can't figure out just what to do
When the cause and cure is you
Time after time after time I try to fight it
But your love is strong and keeps on holding on
Resistance down when you're around pride's fading
My condition I don't wanna be alone
Cause my heart starts beating triple time
With thoughts of loving you on my mind
Can't figure out just what to do
When the cause and cure is you
I get so weak in the knees I can hardly speak
I lose all control and something takes over me
In a daze it is so amazing it's not a phase
I want you to stay with me by my side
I swallow my pride your love is so sweet
It knocks me right off of my feet

@Sans Elle, it's in 6/4, and they repeat a similar phrase every two measures. The hits lie on the downbeat, and after that the second 16th note of every beat in the first measure. In the second measure. The hits are on 1, the 2nd 16th note of 2, 4, and the 2nd 16th note of 5. It does some other weird stuff in the chorus, but that's the general idea of it, as far as I can tell

Chris Dave and Mark Guiliana are two of the best drummers out there (probably ever), definitely my two favourite. But Guiliana definitely isn't 'copying' Chris Dave.
They both have unique styles. Don't confuse that with copying just cause Guiliana isn't playing gospel chops like 80% of the other up and coming drummers who ARE 'unashamedly copying' each other.

So coming back to music: I think this piece is pure gold. I get dizzy trying to figure out all the metrics used here.
Can someone actually give me the set of metrics in this song -after the drum solo of course ;)
I fall for the piano on this piece. And actually I really can feel some Robert Glasper's spirit here. And also a little something of Bjork in Gretchen's singing.

I agree that it would have been smart to make a separate video for the solo, but to say he is just playing around is very musically uninformed. The solo was probably a transitional piece between two songs but it represents its own piece and it is extremely well executed. He is telling a story with the drums. Notice how he presents a theme, expands on it, and then explores new themes, yet all the themes are interrelated. It is a wonderful solo.

I think you need to give the drum solo another watch and pay more attention this time. I'm guessing you're not a drumme,r but the solo was hardly over-indulgent or just Mark showing how fast he cam play. He overlays rhythms, modulates meters, and uses unique hand to foot combinations to create new patterns of sound. He is being creative, not showing off. Plus, he played almost the entire solo between his bass, hi-hat, and snare, which takes discipline. That isn't what I would call over-indulgent
