Well done guys , great vid , I have did this summer and winter and I can assure you it is a lot more relaxing to do when the ridge is covered in snow , we climbed up from the CIC hut and after a good rest walked the ridge to the top of Ben Nevis . It was a beautiful clear day . The snow takes the strain out of picking yourself through the boulders , although its a fantastic feeling to do it in any conditions .
It's a track called 'Breath of the Mountain' from Spiritlands by John Huling. It's roots are native american but I thought the mood of emptiness and wilderness was appropriate on this side of the Atlantic. Available to buy from from Amazon or his own website.
This vid brought back old memories, living in Hampshire now and my ancient Sasernach mates, who are all seamen have been pestering me to take them up a few hills in my homeland. They all want to experience a trip up Nevis, I have been explaining to them about the Arete, this vid should wet their whistle. A couple might even be capable to do the Aonach Eagach, threading the eye on the Cobbler, that kind of stuff. Some of the blessed times of my long life have been in my mountains, although my pirate friends have given me a taste for the sea in my dotage.
You really feel out in the open in places like that! Never been but quite fancy it! Fantastic upload, great choice of music too! Works really well. Great capture!
As a professional videographer I have to say this is just a fantastic video. I have climbed the Ben several times and the first time was the route you filmed. I live only 2 miles from the foot of the Ben so I count myself fortunate to climb it whenever I want. The route you filmed is the most interesting way to climb the Ben. Yes the tourist route is boring and descending is a pain in the knees, but the views are stunning. Good for you fantastic quality filming and very professional. Eddie
Nice Video. My father took me up The Ben 1st Jan 1962 via the Tourist Route and being a man who never liked to return by the same route we came off the Ben via the CMD - complete white-out conditions. I just followed the Old Man down - perhaps best I didn't see where I was going ! Been back several times over the years but still have never approached the Ben from the CMD, must do one day.
Superb film, I did the CMD in 1970 .. I think it may have been in black and white then. Thise rock fields were tedious but the arrete has amazing views. thank You
Good video and good music!! Useful, as have always climbed from the CIC in winter and have never seen the rock. Thinking of taking American friends on this route in September. Cheers.
Great Vid Guys I did this route with my wife many years ago what a buzz! you know when you have done the Ben. Great Muzak to very atmospheric nice one.
Great video. We did it yesterday in terrible visibility so nice to see what we missed. . The arete is not as scary as Sharp Edge, maybe on a par with Striding, and not as tough as Aonach Eagach . The final boulder field after it is tough though because the tanks are getting dry by then. We were 10 hours on the hill not hanging about that much. Descent by tourist route is sore on knees and in poor visibility a bit of a drag. Great day out though.
well done one of my favourite ascents done cmd several times and prefer to start climbing from behind the mountain hut brilliant video cast an eye on it fortnight ago from the ring of steall
1999 I and others where on exercise in Kenya and we got the oportunity to climbed Mount Kilamanjaro or other stuff. I took the Mount and yes that was a great experience. I have no photos of this. What I would like to say you still can't beet the great mountains in Scotland!!!
Well-filmed & edited + good music choice. Light could have been a bit better (brighter) ...but to get the Ben without its 320 day-a-year hat on is rare. We waited 3 months for a decent day in '98.
I am not an experienced climber. But I would try this. Of course. Planning before I went and with someone who would not treat me as inexperienced. I mean. What a chance to see and feel the landscape of Scotland.
I wanted to do this yesterday but one look at how fast the clouds were blowing by the summit made me fall back on the tourist track instead. I think I made a good decision as the winds just got stronger and stronger past 1000m, and I could not even stand on top of the trig point with the strength of the winds. It's hard to get up to Fort William but it's my goal to give this route a shot whenever the conditions allow.
Not as narrow as the T.R. or perhaps Crib Goch the approaching ridge is wide and grassy in the mist route finding can be a bit tricky but as the ridge narrows and curls around to the Ben the route is obvious as it climbs up it widens out into a boulder field plenty to grip , its O.K.
Went up there with my sister once.middle of winter so we took our axes intending to do a winter traverse. Not a flake of snow! Peeing down the whole way. Water running off our noses. Not scary, because the mist was obscuring the exposed bit of ridge! So not much bragging rights!
What a great film. Going to do this in the near future with a mate. Was looking forward to it now I can't wait. Well done. *****. Unrelated comment. the music was ok, but a lowly piper would have been a much better choice.
I done the whole route in about 7 hours and i ran down the tourist route with all my camping gear lol was to boring doing back down after the epic ridge! Glad u had fun
The Carn Mor Dearg (CMD) Arete route is not remotely suitable for a 8 year old and in April the 'normal' route up the Ben is highly likely to have serious snow cover so it's entirely up to your knowledge of your son's abilities but since you are asking the question I think the answer is no.
For other walk ideas that might be more suitable have a look at www.walkhighlands.co.uk/fortwilliam/fortwilliam.shtml. Enjoy your holiday, it's a very scenic area.
I climbed Ben Nevis for the first time in May 2014 using the tourist/pony track but didn't find it challenging enough so going back to do a winter climb on February 10th 2016 using the same route. Would like to try this scrambling route but not sure if its wise in the winter? I'm up for it but taking 2 others with me who aren't experienced climbers.
Awesome, you captured the stunning beauty of the mountains. Excellent choice of music too.
Watching this in lockdown is life enhancing. What a place.

One of the best hiking/scrambling routes in the country!
Looks great. Hope to do this next year.

Awesome. Looking forward to climbing it this year
Going up the Ben in August with my son and I think we will be taking this way up.
Awesome images
Looks a great ridge, not too exposed but still challenging enough.
I am not an experienced climber. But I would try this. Of course. Planning before I went and with someone who would not treat me as inexperienced. I mean. What a chance to see and feel the landscape of Scotland.
Great video, not sure if that has just made me more excited or a bit nervous of my planned ascent on Saturday. :)

Great video. Going there next weekend :-)

Inspires me to have a second crack at this ridge. Thanks!
Great viewing. Thank you
Great video! :-)

Great video. I was wanting to try it later this year. How narrow is it? I did the Tarmachan ridge on Saturday. Do you know how CMD compares?
Great video, music suited it and not too loud. Looked an amazing day, 11 hours is it? John.
I am not used to hike a landscape like this and is my first time tomorrow. Is it very narrow?
OMG
i just watched this again after doing it, lol it was awesome
Hi great video. Am hoping to do this very same route later in the year. Would you mind if I used a few seconds of your video on my channel?
I love this! Thank you! What is the music???
Breath of the Mountain by John Huling
Im going to sneak an ikea wardrobe up there and 200 bags of crisps and sell them to hikers.
🙏
is it it a good idea to go there around february-march?
No.
LOLtv Games June Or July
Not if you have to ask
It's a must via this route total amazing i also have video of most of the ridge up on my channel
I done the whole route in about 7 hours and i ran down the tourist route with all my camping gear lol was to boring doing back down after the epic ridge! Glad u had fun
Great video! Can I ask - where did you get this version of the song?
Hi. Can i have to ask the stile of song? Thanks
Is this climb recommended for someone who has no experience of climbing and who's knee likes to twinge on occasion?
No.
I'm going in April... with my little boy who's 8... do you think he'll be able to do it?

@@scttfrgsn Ok thankyou... I'm going to fort William anyway for a holiday.. I shall probably avoid trying this.
For other walk ideas that might be more suitable have a look at www.walkhighlands.co.uk/fortwilliam/fortwilliam.shtml. Enjoy your holiday, it's a very scenic area.
@@scttfrgsn thank you. So much. ;)
Is it actually as scary as it looks? My friend and I were going to do this but now not so sure one wrong move and SPLAT!

First ever detailed filmed climb to the Ben via this route @ www.hillwalksonvideo.com
Nothing says Scotland like a pan flute.
@kobudo4 You will have a great day! Bring a camera ...I'm sorry now we have few pics!
Where does the track start, is it the same starting point as the tourist path??
can I come with you sometime?
woah
Wow! Amazing and unique footage. I love the way this video was filmed and edited. I upload GoPro videos as well. Check 'em out if you want to!
Epic video, nice camera but horrific music.
