  • Hey everyone! In this week's episode of my Hey Arnold! Character Analysis, we're talking about Torvald! Torvald was a 13 year old student in Arnold's 4th grade class. He wasn't featured very much in the show, but there was one episode where he was in the spotlight. That episode was called "Tutoring Torvald". This was a classic underdog story where we saw Torvald rise up and achieve what seemed impossible. In this video I talk all about Torvald's personality, friendships, family, best moments and more! If you like this video, be sure to give it a thumbs up and subscribe for more!

    I can't believe these kids were all in fourth grade. I thought back then that they were in 6th, 7th, or even 8th grade, not fourth!!! And even now, when I'm 21 years old, they still seem WAY older and more mature than elementary schoolers. They would be so much better as 7th graders 😂😂😂

      Same here. When I was in the 4th grade I wasn't even allowed to cross the street by myself, lol 😅. I don't know how they were allowed to walk around the neighborhood not even just during the day but at night as well. And some of their personalities were so mature too. I agree, they seemed more like 7th graders to me. Even the "6th graders" in the show, Connie & Maria behaved like they were in high school to me, like 16 or 17 years old, not 11 or 12 😆

      This made me think he is much older than the other kids, like he's probably 18 or over 20 years old, having to retake the 4th Grade so many times.
      This also made me think if the known bullies of P.S. 118 were also older, but not as old as Torvald, probably over 16 but they had to retake 5th or 6th Grade a few times.
      Also I think that maybe P.S. 118 may not be his first school, Torvalds used to lived somewhere else before he moved to Arnold's neighborhood.

    "Tutoring Torvald" really struck home for me as a kid. Math was also my worst subject in school and getting a C on a test or an overall just-passing grade in the class was a big deal for me. I still consider math a "necessary evil". XD

    • @DialUpDigest
      @DialUpDigest  3 года назад +6

      I wasn't the best at math either. The amount of math I use in my day to day life is so basic, probably 90% or more of it I've never had to use again outside of school. So, I think Torvald was somewhat right about math, although everyone does need to know the basics.

    Even as a child, I had some empathy for Torvald because I understood what it was like to not catch up with the rest of my classmates in terms of school, grades, and growing up. In my teens, my empathy turned into compassion because I was able to understand the struggles he was facing with trying to get his grades up, and those were the same struggles I had. Now, as an adult about to finish my undergraduate degree, I not only have more compassion for Torvald but also began to thoroughly understand what was occurring outside the confines of PS 118.
    Perhaps the reason that Torvald was held back four times had to do with his family's financial standing, which is decent but not always enough to get by in terms of luxury or the finer things in life. Seeing his mother having to leave the house to work late hours, a father who is barely in the picture, and no other relatives to support them financially makes me believe that Torvald also had to do what he could in order to support the only person strong enough, compassionate enough, and nurturing enough to take care of him, put up with his antics, and just be there for him. If it were not already obvious, it was his mother. He knew he had to be strong for her morally, financially, and spiritually, but he was sacrificing what he was as a child meant to enjoy his youth to support his mother in tough times. I would love to think that him being held back had barely anything to do with insufficient motivation and willpower but all the tough situations he and his mother found themselves in ranging from being in a disadvantaged neighbourhood to crimes that seem to run rampant in where they live. As a means to cope with his unideal financial situation and the environment he was raised in, he developed a hard-as-nails and borderline anti-social personality to hide the pain, the suffering, and even the injustice he has witnessed in his neighbourhood and within his family, considering that it is just he and his mother. I am certain that all he wanted was to be a normal child, but tough situations occurring within his family combined with how he was trying and failing in school in terms of learning and absorbing material and attending his classes have seen him being beaten down.
    I can even see that, given his experience working alongside his mother, it would not surprise me that there have been occasions where certain creeps took advantage of her kind and warm personality, mistook them as her weakness, and totally swindled her on more than one occasion. The example of Torvald knowing exactly how much money Sid owed him is also a testament to how he had to ensure that his mother was not going to be ripped off by swindlers, con-artists, and mountebanks galore, given the overt and covert crimes committed in their neighbourhood. I continue to believe that he and his mother deserve a much better life.
    Where Torvald's friendship with Arnold is concerned, I consider it underrated. Arnold never gave up on Torvald, even when times were tough, and Torvald reflected long and hard about everything Arnold dished out on him without flinching. This is a friendship I would have loved to see grow and grow into full fruition. I would even contend that Torvald and Arnold would easily have the closest friendship ever. Perhaps, their platonic relationship would transcend mere friendship and enter into brotherly territory. Both Torvald and Arnold are only children. Torvald never knew what it was like to have younger siblings. Arnold initially believed that he would have had an older sibling figure in Frankie G, but the felon manipulated him, lied to him, and betrayed his trust. Torvald's and Arnold's brotherhood would demonstrate a closeness, unconditional fraternal love, and encouragement that would make siblings' relationships reach Nirvana levels of ideal, with Torvald being the fiercely protective older brother to Arnold's thoroughly well-rounded younger brother.

    I have a theory bout how Sid knew about Torvalds embarrassing secret. I think its possible that after Arnold helped him get that C he wanted and made his mother happy that Torvald may have made friends with his fellow classmates and started to open up more. I love these Hey Arnold character analysis videos. Like Torvald I also struggled with Math. I hated it. I still do. When you look at characters like Torvald and Harold being 13 and still in the 4th grade it really does make you wonder what is going on with the school system at PS118
    Also along with the cracks on the outside of Torvalds house. If you listen to the background when Arnold goes to his house you can hear what sounds like gunshots. Always freaked me out as a kid. Also his mother looks like she's going to work and she says "those chicken fingers aren't going to sell themselves". It seems like she really works hard to keep a roof over their heads and she does love her son and believes in him
    Also are you going to do an analysis on Arnold's cousin Arnie? He was an interesting character for sure

      It's weird how they never acknowledge that Harold is actually in the same boat as torvald. (13 in 4th grade).
      Same with Patty whose 14 and still in 6th grade.

    11:38 I have a feeling that Torvald, Ludwig, and Big Patty are all either full or half siblings. Big Patty is however the only sibling without a criminal background. Plus Big Patty's dad from the episode polishing Ronda is probably her step dad not her real dad. And Ludwig and Torvald's dad is Big Patty's real dad.

    • @DialUpDigest
      @DialUpDigest  3 года назад +3

      Those are some interesting theories Jason. I've never thought that maybe Big Patty's father was not her biological father, but it does make sense. She is much taller than both her parents, so maybe she got her height from her biological father. But, I think her father shown could very well be her biological father as well. We never saw Big Patty, Ludwig and Torvald all together, but it would have been interesting to see what they thought of each other.

    • @jasonrandom372
      @jasonrandom372 3 года назад +2

      We need a reboot of Hey Arnold. Only then we will find answers. Also maybe both of Big Patty's parents are not her biological parents and instead she was adopted. Besides we also never find out what Ludwig and Torvald's last names are.

    When it comes to this character, I literally find just a prime example of failure to the educational system. The only differences of a child gets left behind. The teacher would get in trouble with no child left behind. Of course, this is before the whole no child left behind law that was passed actually years after this episode aired. I’m not an expert on the matter, but still this character. I can’t say like how long he’ll continue rising up through education I mean so far I think he’s doing better now. In later episodes of Hey Arnold. But I’ll say a kid like that who gets to high school at the age of 18 this will probably be a good time to drop out maybe get your GED. But I can’t be sure who knows maybe he’ll continue his education until he finishes high school but I can’t be sure. But I’ve met people who have been in his shoes before.

    I get Arnolds math strategy but it's too slow to use in real life and it gets confusing to some people if u were to swap the numbers i.e. 9 * 8, while Geralds way though lazier is actually more optimal. If you memorize multiplication answers then alot of math later on is easier to figure out. Eventually Gerald will have to learn tips and tricks but as long as he remembers what different combinations of numbers equal then he will have an easier time than someone like Arnold who relies too much on tricks to solve such simple math problems.
