Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. Remember when you used to give them grass trimming tasks to keep the littles busy? Maybe get them butterfly nets and pay them for each white moth they catch…😂 Talk about double duty, pest control and farm boy fun.
Didn't realize till half way through the season that those "cute white butterflies!" my kids kept seeing were cabbage moths. 😬😬😬 I'll be trying this pest control solution this year.
Hello pollen my old friend, you’ve come to clog my head again!😊
So very true!! The yellow dust and sneezes of pollen!
😂
It's cute how Bear pokes his head in every once in awhile to see if you are still there.
I love Bear!
Cowculus LOL Miah might change his mind when he has four in milk at once. What a blessing you have Will to help. You can still have a huge garden without overdoing trying to do it all. I follow Honeybee Hollow too and it seems you could not have found anybody more qualified to entrust with your gardens.
Sweet Jess, I can see while watching this video you are in total bliss. You look amazing, you're in your element, you look like your feeling good. Your doing what you do best, and love....planting seeds, and gardening. Life is good! Blessings to you my friend.
You are much much younger than I, but you really are an inspiration to me. Jess, I truly believe you are one of God’s lights for the world. Even in your sadness video’s your an inspiration. Thank you for blessing me.
She always makes my wife and I smile, we just love her joy for life.
Me as well!
I'm getting such a kick out of Jess running around in the greenhouse in her bare feet while Will's in there in his big waterproof garden boots.
Now it feels like roots and refuge, the pavilion and a crap ton of seeds started . Amen sister
The Pavillion truly gives the garden that sense of place.
That SMILE at 7:13 is EVERYTHING. You just shine in this video 🥲
💚Is that the fan we're hearing? Think so, but sounds like rain. Thank you, Jess, for showing us the continuation of seed starting 💚
Herds of cattle are fun. If you don't want to milk just let the calves do the milking. We milk daily for a month and after that the calves take over and we just keep the calves in a pen for 12 hours when we need milk for the house.
It's refreshing to hear someone admit that she wants to keep all the animals! Very sweet.
You're not cheap. You just LOVE a bargain with a deep abiding passion. 😉
Plus I love getting something with a history attached to it!
I love the fast forwards with little talking sometimes because it lets you sit with Daniels music, which is so relaxing, and just helps set such positive vibes! ❤❤❤
I have an 8m old, and any time I put one of your videos on he just has to sit, cuddle, and watch Jess. That's ok, later we will walk through our garden and pet his thyme
Yup the pollen is flying in Greenville county to. The Bartlett pear trees are in full bloom and causing issues for everyone
How beautiful! My favorite fruit!!! So sweet, plump, and pretty!!
@@teresamariner4238 these trees don’t bare fruit they are some worthless trees, the only thing these trees bare are pollen
Hi Jess, this is one of your best videos.♥️ I love getting an update on the cows. Watching you planting seeds in your lovely greenhouse is inspiring and very peaceful. 💕💕💕
What a lovely time I’ve had watching you with my morning coffee…❤️❤️
Thanks for sharing the farm & garden progress! Many blessings to all 🤗💜🇨🇦
The cabbage looper does not come from the Cabbage White butterflies, but a nondescript owlet moth. Double jeopardy! There are loads of different cabbage worms.
Good to know! Thanks!
The greenhouse is beautiful, a real work of art. I'm envious, of your ability to garden barefoot. I'm at least 2 months from being able to do that.
My son sneezed just as you said “it’s pollen season” 😂
A few tall growing shrubs/small ornamental trees planted around the pavilion would provide shade in the pavilion when the intense, late afternoon sunlight is angling into the pavilion. ...nice shady spot for a comfortable chair and an iced glass of something.
My late husband used to keep a tennis racket by the cabbages & cole crops to whack the cabbage looper moths.
The fan sounds like a brook. Relaxing. Thank you Psalm 91 over all believers.
Its So Beautiful to see someone doing what they LOVE 🥰
And strangely fulfilling (for me) to watch you be Soo Successful at it 😄
You and Sweet Miah are Amazing and Inspirational
I love how the colored cups play off the colored windows plays off the colored table. All the ART! Feel me?
I don't wanna pay as much as it cost to pay somebody else who found it at a garage sale! Priceless!!! You're great!
The best pork we ever raised was given excess goat milk. Yum!
Awe.. Was just checking in on you and.. Wow.. Right here you are Jess! Thinking about you and your CowGirls! Little Mamas & babies!!! You always make my days! Been relistening to many of your Devotionals last several days! So inspiring, always! God is Good! Bless you all! ❤️ 🐮🐄
I am 66 years old and disabled. I live in a suburb, though I was raised on a farm. Gardening is in my blood. It is my spirituality. It is my sacred place. It is where I go to heal. It is where I go to take care of myself. You can tell how well I’m doing by what my garden looks like. And since I am aging and disabled, it is never perfect. At times I have struggled to accept myself as I am, and this garden has helped me do so. There are times I’m tempted to just give it up since I can’t do it as well as able-bodied younger people. But that’s defeat and it leads to depression and waining self acceptance. So I have named my garden, Teah’s Garden of Joy. I toil in it as I can. I add to it, as I can. I sit within it and let it embrace me. I choose to focus on what I can do, instead of what I can’t do. Each year I add more beds. Last year I added a beautiful garden shed. This year I added a chicken coop and soon a small inexpensive greenhouse. I have seating all throughout the garden because I must sit often. My face turns red and my breathing is labored after only minutes of work. But I don’t care as long as I can sit within the tomatoes and pop one off into my mouth on a warm day. When I get home from work, my garden is but a few steps from my car. Yes, I still work part time. Every penny goes into my garden! And when I truly retire, I will sit with it, that which I created, and relish what created me, the me of my silver years. I truly want to start a RUclips series. Not to teach how to garden! But teach how to keep gardening, to keep living. You, Jess, are often my inspiration. It is no surprise that I recently purchased multiple cattle panels! And that I have wild boar seedlings started. And that I purchased my first two stackable‘s this year! I thank you for touching my life!
I love the video on how you and Will are just holding a conversion while you fill pots and plant seeds. I grow chocolate mint every year. I go to a local store and get my plants from them.
A local friend of mine gave me some chocolate mint last year, and it survived the winter. I'm so excited. :)
💖Such a nice time in the greenhouse. Love being with you as you sow your seeds! Take care. ❇❇❇
If only we could move that fast while actually doing the work of sowing seeds. LOL.
The green house is absolutely stunningly beautiful plants ganging light beautiful windows
Maze/mustard yellow looks Good on you!! Loving the dress, and the hair flip lol ❤️😘
Lady, you look so vibrant and healthy! 🥰
I hope to one day spend my time as you do. I would love nothing more than to farm and garden full time. Until then I shall work to be grateful for what I already have!
So happy for you! Looks like you are feeling pretty good. You remind me of a bee on a spring day in this video. Where I live it is very much still winter but our clocks are jumping forward soon and my grow room/bedroom is coming to life. This time of year is absolutely magical. One little season bringing everything and everyone back to life. I struggle every single winter. There’s no doubt in my mind if I hold on long enough the next season will come to help lift this dark cold heavy cloud up off me so I can receive the gift of the next gardening season. Here’s to so many hours of sun. The longest hardest days of the year, filling up, and sharing as much as I absolutely can. I wish every single person the very best season 💚🌱🤟
My mom and I ordered our first Greenstalk, so thanks for the heads up about the sale! She's kind enough to share her garden space with me while I work towards having my own place. We're starting seeds today, and I'm so excited! I love being able to join you on your farm while I'm in the waiting room stage; it's been a lifesaver when I start to get discouraged about where I am in my own homesteading journey. Thanks for sharing, it truly makes a difference.
My son gave me a GreenStalk last Mothers Day❤ You will have a blast growing in one. I learned about starting tomato suckers from Jess. I put them in empty cells of my GreenStalk just to see. I had tomatoes in December. I had them growing up into my ligustrum tree from my deck. Such fun and lesson learned. Plant tomatoes lower😂😂😂
Thank you so much for sharing your adventure. Blessings
Early Spring looks so good on you Jess! Thank you for posting. And yes….the SC pollen is here in full force!!
So looking forward to seed staring this weekend
yeah, first - Wish you all the best ❣ and send you much love
Gosh, I can't get over how warm it is there! Many feet of snow here 🥴
Yes, and we got a new dusting this morning, but it didnt last! March came in like a lion!! Rain storms, more snow! The sunshine yesterday melted the last of the snow from previous storms, ar least in my area. Farther up the foothills and mountains they got several more feet to add to the 5 they already had. Think they said new toral eas 90 inchrs?!? Some snowed in thsnks to the last two storms. . Fun watching the icicles gleam, glisten, melt, then blow off the eaves yesterday in the rain and sunshine. Looking forward to my freezing toes and cold feet warming up soon. I'm so cold sensitive! Thanks, hypothyroidism and Addisons. But at least we see it coming, can't wait for the explosions of green. And the pollen. God bless!
I love that you have someone to help in the garden who is as excited about gardening as you are 🥰 And yes, seeds are very cool 😊❤
OfferUp! You would not believe the deals we have gotten! You just have be ready to fly when you find it.
Playing with my new permaculture chicken composting system digging and hauling woodchips as I watch. Spring is almost here. Can I get an Amen!!!?
So peaceful, watching you planting.
Bless you Jess !
Just when i needed some homestead for my heart! Thank you jess!
I’m so glad you’re feeling better you look fabulous. If I understand right you were doing carnivore I have a hard time sticking to it but anyhow on the basil tea, can you give me more information on that and thanks I love you bunches❤❤❤
ugh I sooo need this garden viewing. it's snowing by me and I have a sick chicken in my house. thanks for the therapy!
Prayers for your sick chick.
Awesome, thanks for sharing these moments with us.
Nice to see you in your greenhouse happy place 🤗
Good times for sure
I was going to start a bunch of seeds this week but a 80 mph straight line wind destroyed my greenhouse and wadded it up like trash. After I cried ugly tears I’ve decided to start tomatoes and peppers in my dining room on my side table in front of the picture window and then direct sow what I can in the garden beds after the chance of frost is over. Where there is a will there is a way. I WILL have a new greenhouse by Fall. A greenhouse that will be stronger and bigger than my 6’x8’ Harbor Freight greenhouse.
I am SO looking forward to weather warm enough to wear an adorable dress like that. 💛 We are having such an unusually frosty end to winter/beginning of spring here in Oregon.
Even with the extra cold here, my tulips and daffodils are up about 5". Just waiting for seeds to come in and I'll have dirty fingers in the greenhouse. You can feel the change in the air and land that Spring isn't far off.
I'm in Oregon as well, and I almost cried when I saw more snow in the forecast, lol. But my first Daffodil bloomed, so Spring is coming!
Always seeing glimpses of Bear in the background….happy farm dog ❤
LOVE the greenhouse! I'm jealous.
I know I'm weird but I love the smell of good dirt, and I can almost smell that potting soil! So ready for Spring! But we just got a late blast from old man winter and he dumped 6 inches here and more in higher areas of Idaho. Weird weather this year so we will take the snow! I don't even start seeds til end of March
Sooo ready for Spring!! Have fun with your potting and planting!!
Can’t wait till your next video with the new calf!
So lovey! Congrats on the new birth and I hope you get to be there like you want!
Wooohooo another wild Pavillion area 🤩😊
You look so good! More vibrant and happy! 🥰🙌💗 I’m happy you are feeling better
Estate sales, Habitat for Humanity ReStores are my favorites for "quality" used furniture.
If you have any convenience centers (with a leave and take) near you, check there! You’d be amazed what people leave there just so they don’t have to go through trying to sell it 😅 I’ve found many pieces of furniture that needed little to no work!
Your greenhouse is beautiful.
Your garden is so beautiful! I can't wait to see it all in its prime. The love and care that you and Miah have put into everything shows.
Yet another pretty dress :) haha can you tell Im a brand new lover of linen?!
Love these videos and the glimpse of spring yoy gave, as I have 6 or so inches of snow outside right now...
Hi pretty lady. How are you doing today? And how is the weather over there and that of your family
Welcome yo the south
I was out in the garden with my 9 month old son(first time for him ☺️) and I was JUST looking for a video from you to watch 😂❤️ thank goodness
We are looking for vintage metal bistro chairs and a table to go under an arch in our flower garden bed in our circle drive. Marketplace is our go to for almost everything here!
Love your beautiful spring time dress
I’ve seen the cabbage butterflies already too
Me and my partner dream to have this one day, thank you for inspiring so many Jess 💕
You did an awesome video Jess thanks so much for letting us see may u have the best germination in this year
Thank you for the warm weather watch! We are going back under snow today supposedly.
your garden pavilion space just looks so lovely. I so hope to some day have a space like that to sit and relax in.
I wish I had gotten this on video, but I was watching this video with my 4 month old and when you were talking to the camera she decided you were talking to her and was having a whole conversation with you, Jess! lol
Hi pretty lady. How are you doing today? And how is the weather over there and that of your family
Ugh yes the pollen season! My car was covered in it! One thought about a first time birth is she’ll probably be on the smaller side and calf may need to be pulled. Having something to tie to, such as the sides of the stall will help. Just something to think about. Growing a herd by keeping the females is super cool. I almost cried when you said you were going to pull up the Brussels sprouts because I can never get them to grow lol. Perennial garden will be a lush green before you know it 🥰
I have been looking all over the internet for linen dresses like you have. So cute!! Can't find any anywhere. Love the one Jess is wearing in this video. I would love any info on where I can find them. I too have very sensitive skin and would love to get some for summer. Can't wait to start my seeds. You are such an inspiration to me Jess. I will be starting my second garden soon thanks to you, I started a little late but enjoying it so much. I'm 65. :)
I’m 99.99% sure she is wearing a not perfect linen “volume” dress. 🙂
I would love to see a natural fabrics wardrobe haul from you 😍
loving the speed up and slow downs!
I loved this video. Thank you
Good morning 😃
You got the pavillion!!!!
Hearing y'all talk about mint, my sister grew buckets of different kinds of mint this year and made teas out of them! She had (let's see if I can remember them all): spearmint, peppermint, pineapple mint, lemon mint, orange mint, chocolate mint, and berries and cream mint. She made some awesome teas!
Love your farm!
This is my rest year. I'm not even doing farmers market with seedlings.
Already planning for next year. I hope to increase to between 3000 & 5000 next year. I do veggies, herbs, flowers.
For too long I didn't know those white mothey butterflies were bad !
I love your greenhouse!
The pollening is happening here in North Texas, too. I got some chocolate mint at my local nursery the other day that just smells heavenly. I hope you’re able to find some!
My Catskill brussels are still holding out against the bolt, but the sprouts are going loose instead of tight as they increase. lol Probably getting pulled out here soon too. Just not cool enough this year for the second round of long season winter veggies. Some second succession sown broccoli varieties are still tight and growing their heads bigger, others so much.
Need both heat and cold resistance in all our winter garden season veggies here. My garlic, onions and such were in amongst other things that needed freeze cover, so everything got the layers of frost cloths together for that 11F dip. No damage. Frost cloth supports are still all up though, over all the beds and pot clutters. Trust not the spring!
It's not being cheap, it's being a good steward of what you've been blessed with. That's what I tell myself anyway. 😉
Would love to get a cow birth video like you used to do with your goats ❤
Oh my gosh that cabbage moth is driving me crazy!!!!
I am so jealous you guys have nice green grass I got the gross snow still I can not wait for green grass I hate New York if I had a lot of money I would live were you guys live
You have inspired me to start some seeds. Set up a small greenhouse with grow lights and started some flower seeds. Next some veggies.
I will be starting my seeds this evening as soon as my two children are asleep. Can’t wait! Pollen season hasn’t quite hit SE Tennessee yet, but it will be here very soon. Gird your sinuses, folks.
The auto-generated cc is funny to read while watching this video. "Maya was saying he would really like to have more extra milk to feed the hawks and so I think he's wanting to keep a cow really to have access to feed out dogs"
