Excellent overview video for a beginner. Very well done, clear and concise, and even the quality of the video and audio was crisp. I enjoyed watching. Thank you for the post.
almost 6 years later, still a great video for anyone who wants to get started. Thank you for sharing! I am curious about the advice from others regarding beekeeping clubs, etc. One thing I have learned over the years of various hobby clubs is that often times, you're either in or you're out before you get two feet in the door. Would be quite frustrating to not get the info I needed because I didn't fit the group.
I am just getting into bee keeping. My question is how often do you go into the hive? Do the bees become more accepting to your intrusion- gentle some after each entrance? Can you expect to split you hive 1-2 times the first year? If I begin with 2 hives, and have a good food source, how many splits can i expect? Should I split or just add supers and work my way up to obtain honey?
@littlechefxxx I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what 'properlist' is. I am planning on doing one on how honey is harvested from the hive - is that something along the lines of what you might have in mind?
So good to hear you are giving it a go! Yes, lots to learn - but between some videos, books, talking with others, and perhaps taking a class (if at all possible where you live) you'll have success. Enjoy that honey, too. =)
@CaptainRidley Thanks! Let me know if there is something about beekeeping that would be helpful to beginning beekeepers. Plan on making a harvesting honey video when the time comes.
i never heard theses things called anything like this - mouse in ur colony wow little mice = why do u need a inner lid ? why did u bees die ? doesnt it make them docile when u use smoke ?
I would like to keep bees I have a question I live in the middle of a 20 plus acre orchard and my question is would the orchard being sprayed all summer long hurt the bees
Thank you for Video about bees and beehives! Very interesting! :) Best beekeeping greetings from Ukraine! :) Good luck beekeeping and good winter for your bees! :)
hi i was just wondering if your honey gets crystallized because mine does and if you know how to stop this from happening can you please tell me. thank you.
+ilmi “ilmi10” goxhaj pasteurize it to 160 degrees, but you lose some of the raw honey qualities that people want, and it wont crystallize, otherwise i heat mine in microwave in limited short bursts of heating.
Don't suppose OP will come back after 4 years, but for anyone else wondering, what we did when we where keeping bees was just stir it for a very long time. The key is to not stop stirring until the honey gets a silvery shimmer, that's what my granddad told me anyway. I don't know if this applies to all types of honey, we only made heather honey and it worked well for us.
Daniel Breiland well now that I have found someone whos active, what brand/company for bee boxes do you buy from? I want bees and am still learning about them, but I can't find anyone saying which companies are the best.
Bate Smith Usually when one starts keeping bees, one of the last things you have to worry about is getting an extractor. It is rare for a first year colony to produce enough surplus to harvest. After your first year many beekeepers will rent an extractor from their local beekeeping club or supply house instead of buying. It can get expensive buying a new one. Also, in case anyone wants to know, Mr. Andresen has a very nice extractor that works just fine.
I believe he explained it generally in that the bees cannot communicate in the smoke. What he did not detail was that bees use a pheromone to communicate and the smoke will mask it or counter it completely. If you are stung by a honeybee, they will also leave behind an aggression pheromone so it's usually recommended to smoke the sting area to avoid being stung again in the same location.
Glen is an expert beekeeper and a longtime teacher. I'm not aware of anything that is inaccurate or misleading. If you are able to be more specific, that would be helpful to understand your comment.
Brennin Palfrey I realize that this troll posted this a year ago, but as of 16 August 2015, when I had an opportunity to visit Mr Andresen's home during a tour of gardens in the Portland Oregon area, I can tell all that might come upon this that his bees are quite happy and have produced a lot of surplus in a very hot and dry summer. All this using "wrong and misleading" info. It seems that Mr Brennin Palfrey wouldn't know good beekeeping if it hit him in the head.
Glenn, thanks for the information. You obviously have years of experience and wisdom in this. I really appreciate you sharing it.
I am a new beekeeper, as well. I love working with my bees!

Just Heat about one Hour In Warm Water
you can't, just gently heat it

real honey is sometimes whiteish~ and hard (thats what she said)
You said nothing about centrifuge ...you need that too in order to get the honey out :P

The first thing to do if you're a beginner?
Get tested to see if you are allergic to bee stings!
Do you sell bees I'm in need of some bees
@twoworlds7 thank you so much!!
thr always has to be one bastard who dislikes a awsome video
I'm going all wax
The Smoker makes the bees believe there is a fire, so they start gathering their honey, become less aggressive and prepare to leave the hive.

Don’t like the plastic
Hey heard that you. Were in an accident. Mama
to bad most of the info is wrong and misleading.

yeah be more specific, are you talking
1. misleading for a commercial beekeeper?
2. misleading for an organic beekeeper?
stop talking shit
