Great Video Barry!!! Especially the instruction on tying in the upright wings. These have always been a crapshoot for me but I think your instruction makes it almost easy. (Almost) Lots of other great tips to compliment this age old pattern. Please keep posting videos!!!!!

I’m a new subscriber to your channel, and I’ve loved your videos, and seeing your skill and experience as a true artist and craftsman at work.
I’ve found that mosquito flies can often be very effective, and are a good switch-up when other dry flies I’ve been throwing aren’t working…if I had to guess why, I think it might be because that, regardless of the season, or the weather, or whatever else may (or may not) be hatching on any given day, (or at any given time of day), mosquitoes are a constant presence on most of the streams I fish.
But, at the same time, because of their constant presence, trout are also very suspicious of anything that doesn’t look quite right, because they’re so familiar with how real mosquitoes appear, that mosquito fly patterns need to look really convincing for fish to be fooled into taking the fly.
The pattern you’ve tied in this video looks great, and I’ve no doubt that it would fool even the cagiest and wiliest of trout!

Barry first I'll admit to a faux pas. When I went to watch this video I found I had given it a "Thumbs Down!" 😱😱 I cannot imagine why, I probably flinched when I was doing it. So I have remedied it.

Hi Patrick, you can if you wish, but they are surprisingly robust!
i some times tie a very small red yarn to the back of the fly as if they took blood.

Hi Chris, The hackle pliers I prefer to use over others are the Tiemco rotary pliers. I have made a video on how to improve these.

Nice pattern and great tricks to learn. I have a problemi with my moose mane patch: the fibers are thin and fragile and not much diversified in colour, in a word I'm not at all happy with what I bought online. Any suggestion for brands and/or marketplace to buy nicer patches from ? I live in the EU
Hi Andrea, buying natural materials online has its problems, you have no chance of picking the exact material that you want and what you get is a bit of a pot luck. The company that sells the best moose mane is without doubt 'Natures Spirit' you should try and find you nearest dealer.

Hi Jacquie, you can also use peacock quill or horse hair.
One thing that works well is a stripped grizzly hackle. You wind the body starting with the tip, at the tail
good job for an ephemera not mosquito because of the up position of the wing and also the tail.
Hi, thanks Patoche. I know it looks more like a mayfly than a mosquito, but this is a very old pattern, I believe around 1930, that does work very well when imitating a mosquito.

Ok, If it's a CDC fly then CDC oil without a doubt. If its hackled dry flies then its a dry with Amadou first and then in Shimakazi dry fly powder.

Size 12 is just big enough to see but small enough to look real. 14 is almost too small and I start to lose track of it in the bubbles.
