- [S11 E39] Cornel West on "Black Prophetic Fire"
On this week's show, Prof. Wolff presents updates on the strengths of socialism in German elections, British and US public opinion; and the US policies that are impoverishing its Puerto Rican colony. The second half of the show features an interview with Dr. Cornel West, with special attention to the contradictory realities of Harvard University, the public health failure of US policy toward Covid, the hostility toward Haiti and Haitians, and China.

I used to respect that West guy until he now teaches at a private religious college. Rather than exploiting peoples labor for money he is helping the college exploit peoples minds offering salvation for money. This is why you can never never never trust a liberal. For marxists: why does human labor have such a privileged position in your framework. Why isnt a person's mind just as valuable as their labor? We have a service/knowledge economy now, not a manufacturing economy.

I wish that most struggling Americans could see, understand and believe, that the indifference and injustice that has been perpetrated on Black and Native Americans over the CENTURIES by rich white guys is currently heading for a neighborhood near YOU! It is "politely" referred to as Neo-liberalism. It doesn't matter if you are black, brown, red, white or green. If you are a wage-earner, a "working stiff", a laborer, or whatever pejorative you can imagine, if you are in the bottom half of the socio-economic spectrum in America your future is in jeopardy! America is no longer a Democracy. It is a Plutocracy where our elected representatives behave like privileged Royalty and not REPRESENTATIVES of We the People.
You nailed it on the head. Perfect. This damn class warfare coming down on us. 80% work pay check to pay check and 1 in 5 children are homeless. This can't last forever. More and more ppl are seeing the light.
Neo-feudalism is the correct word.
Lol. It has never been a democracy. It has always been a plutocracy with slaves in the 18th-20th century and now a plutocracy with miserable-wage, stressed workers.
Where are the green people? Get out of your parents basement !
What Athens had done to the world it eventually brought home to its citizen. Thucydides basically said this in the "Pelopennesian War". It was an assessment of declining empires. All the "others" feel the violence of the empire until there is are few places that have felt the brutality. So empire brings empire home. Tie what you said to the crushing criminal justice system and the 24/7 surveillance mechanisms in the US. It is bleak for the avg person.

Dr West in the last 5 minutes eloquently sums up the root of problems in America today, putting into words what I've felt for a long time... thank you!
indeed! 👏 I call it the 'Me, Me, Me' syndrome. it's one of Capitalism's most detrimental affects on people.
American public cannot differentiate between freedom and self centredness. Individualism is not freedom but an expression of characteristic, that may or may not be egocentric. Freedom also comes with a responsibility, without it, there would be chaos, hence defies the moral code of conduct.
We're not all like that, PL.
@@stevesharik331 at least half are. Your govt is worse, disgrace to humanity, period.
Freedom is the most overrated word in the English language. We exist within an ecosystem, where any act by anyone or anything in it, can have an impact on all within in. If this pandemic and climate/weather-change doesn't remind us or inform us of this, what could make us, not just understand, but also to act in accordance with this knowledge?

Brother West and Wolff in dialogue is so precious and inspiring!
These two academics summed up my career experience at a "prestigious" CA research university between 2007-2011. Barely learned anything useful in life, to-be-honest. They beat critical-thinking to death but not one actually practiced it.
Nobody wants critical thinking. Not the schools. Not the employers. And definitely not the spoon fed masses. Nerd lost it's pejorative meaning around the time specialization in STEM became useful to the owning class. But you're only supposed to hyperfocus on a narrow area of expertise. Having a wide knowledge base is not an employable skill so it is not advertised as beneficial.
Being, at least a bit of, a sceptic and have the skills to do so is crucial for a society who wants not to lean on what's said they should do but being constantly in progress to improve their own advantages in life. If not, people become sheeps, willing to swallow and do all what's required by those who rule.

Excellent discussion Gentlemen
Reactionaries have come up with a brand new strategy against "socialism": rave on and on about how "it doesn't work"! They are full of innovative debating ideas. I've NEVER heard anything like that before! With creativity like this, what can possibly go wrong??
Unfortunately to build up a generation and culture that can understand the truth you are saying, it takes years, and some level of security and democratic rights.. lots of teaching of critical analysis too. We havent had enough of those two factors together, and the power structures that have always planned ahead, are now playing their cards at every turn, mobilizing the most uninformed part of the population to support a growing fascist regime, while buying off or indoctrinating politicians to not see whats happening before their eyes.

...my favorite economist talks with a true intellectual titan - it just doesn't get better than this...
More like a Titanic with all the god bothering.
@@twntwrs, Dr. West (and Chris Hedges, for that matter) speaks from his values - if you can't deal with the notion of a "god" (full disclosure: as a Zen Buddhist, I'm a non-theist myself), then listen to the substance of what he is saying - if someone gets genuine ethics from a belief in a god (or a disbelief in one), they can rock on, in my book - not to mention that the vast majority of people DO believe in a god, and thus their message will reach way more people than this comment...
@@dr_orient4782 If your reputation hinges on your stature as an intellectual, emitting myth and superstition based babble does not fortify that reputation. Intellectual reputations are judged by fellow intellectuals, the leading ones among which godbothering is decidedly not celebrated. The notion that "genuine" ethics are to be gotten from belief in non-genuine entities (gods) is absurd prima facie.
West especially should know better how his people are held captive by this cult and should be leading them away from it instead of legitimising and pandering to it. Perhaps he didn't understand or even read the part where Marx mentions "the opium of the people."
@@twntwrs, your chauvinism is showing - your point of view appears to be that those not totally with us are against us; mine is the converse: those not totally against us are with us. Then again, I'm an anarchist, and you apparently are a tankie. I don't worry about reputation, that is for others to concern themselves with; my only interest is how to safeguard a decent future (at the very least) for the next generation of human beings, not to mention giving the ecosystem in which they will live a fighting chance. Whomever can assist those ends is someone I wish to talk to - that list might include the bourgeois, even some of the wealthy, as well - no revolution can succeed without backing within the military, so I'll be looking there too. Does that mean I'll sell out the working people I fight for (like a Bernie), or abandon the Socialism I see as the way to achieve real human progress (like anyone in the Democratic Party)? Certainly not: my price is too high, since it is the complete surrender of power by the oligarchy, an the breaking up of the corporate state. But that's where I'm coming from. I need no one's approval...
You gotta love the whole "socialism doesn't work" line, as if "work" is some sort of objective self-contained metric and not...completely contentless really. Not to mention the implication that capitalism _does_ "work", in spite of, well literally every problem we see around us. It's the kind of rhetoric that itself only "works" if one doesn't think about it for more than 0 seconds.
There's also no problem continuing to try shit that doesn't work, like the f35 program, nation-building in afghanistan, etc. But "try" socialism? No way we could possibly do that
Show me where it's worked !
Seeing it FAIL has been the core objective of US foreign policy for decades. Its the circular conversation the US loves. We can't let socialism take hold, its evil... free people elect socialists... they begin their mandate... they have some success... the US imposes sanctions... attacks the economic system... right wing zealots backed by the CIA stage a coup... right wing puppet corporate lapdogs that open the country to US business are put in office... "Look, we told you, socialism doesn't work."

I love you, Richard Wolff. We all make mistakes and say uninformed or underinformed things.
The SPD is called "Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschland" or Social Democratic Party of Germany. Sadly the SPD is not even social democratic in theory, not in practice. They weren't in the past (see WW1, Weimar) and are not in this century (see Kosovo, Hartz4).
Now they make a coalition with the Greens and the Liberals, which meens deconstruction of the crumbling social state, paying the green transformation by taxing the poor and having no answer to the growing AfD, a proto-fascist party.
Keep up the good work.
ruclips.net/video/rOLmdBP38y8/видео.html - Yanis Varoufakis on Angela Merkel’s Legacy, European Politics & the “Sordid Arms Race” on the Seas
The same can be said of the Arbeiderpartiet, the Labour Party in Norway. It was first in introducing neo-liberal politics here, in electricity supply and health care and in . The liberal (in the European sense of the word) conservatives and libertarians, who have governed the last 8 years, have continued the same kind of politics.
But the " S " stands for socialist...that was Wolff's point...what it means, was not
his point...just as what "capitalism" means is not his point...or democracy.
All that matters is...everything bad = capitalism....the solution to bad is therefor
socialism and democracy. ( this has been sufficient to secure $10, 000 /mo from
about 2500 people who will pay to hear it....which for Wolff = "success beyond
his wildest dreams."
J GALT
People that have listened to Wollf some times know very well that the statement
""All that matters is...everything bad = capitalism" is far from the truth, because they know that W, over and over again, has said that all systems have weaknesses and strenghts. They also know very well that W also has said many times that both feudalism and slavery are bad systems, so how can everything bad be capitalism? Galt reveals his own lack of rationality. As libertarians and neo-liberals he beleives that the market is a divine construction. They are believing in the fiction of the invisible hand and the tautology that the market is everywhere and allways right. Everything good = capitalism and that's the reason he must say everything is wrong with soscialism. So that's the way he is demonstrating to the audience here his totalitarian and authoritarian attitudes. It was not the capitalists or the slaveowners ot the church or the landlords that fought for universal suffrage, for Democracy, it was those people in the 19th century that called themself socialist and they also fought for the liberation of women. Conclusion: Mr. Galt is an enemy of Democracy, liberation of slaves, women and working class. The class war in 19th century against the liberation mentioned above also used God, the invisible hand, the Bible, Aristotle etc. etc., but lost. Now, we have to wait for the invectives , which Galt normally uses when he is empty of arguments.
@@owesteen-hansen2152 Wolff's self-contradictions are known to all who listen carefully...
and verify the "facts" involved...and why would any sane person, who knew
what the word meant NOT be an enemy of "democracy"???
One need not argue against that which is NOT an argument...and the words have no meaning...
so this is the rest of today's critique that is posted elsewhere, since this comment is directed
at the person who initiated this thread...and our "functional illiterate" who wouldn't know what a
relevant response is or capable of an actual argument.
One has to marvel at the shock and surprise and belief ...regarding the "opinions"
of the "functionally illiterate"...when no one knows what the words mean.
Today people are interested in living in a "socialist country"...yet there is no
definition of "socialism"? ( or there are many, so for todays exercise in "willful ignorance"
we mean the one's that haven't failed yet. )
They blame "capitalism" for the housing problems in Britain, but this is the "rentier"
economy Marx believed would be undone by "capitalism". ( see Michael Hudson )
And this exercise is all about government and law, as well as fiat/inflation which
began in 1933, and yet, this is implied as being "capitalism", again.
Finally, blaming capitalism for climate change, when it is clearly the result of
the available energy in "fossils fuels" and its ability to do "work"...is another
misdirection...or does anyone think that this source of energy would not
have been used regardless of the economic description after having
been discovered????
As long as no one knows what the words mean, you can use "rhetoric" for anything...
you simply have to fool enough people to support your efforts.
You gotta love Wolff, and his fractured fairy tales...with todays "altered history... in that the amount of deaths from
(or with) Covid has exceeded that of the Spanish Flu in the US. ( as well a the great depression of 1920/21 which
he keeps "omitting" because that would mess up his "we have never faced a pandemic and depression before" lie.)
What did the US do to mitigate either...absolutely NOTHING, and both ended quickly...with the "great
depression" not even noted as being significant.
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH, it's just not the strength of the ignorant or the willfully ignorant.
