Most drill bit companies leave the shanks somewhat soft only hardening the drill part. they do this so the chuck will grab better. For best life punches and chisels made from shanks should be hardened. As a gunsmith I never throw away old drill bits. I've made countless assemble pins and firing pins from them.
So the "secret" drill companies have been keeping from us for millenia is that you can sharpen the drill bit to be a chisel? Wow this changes everything, I will never look at life the same way. I'm born again thank you

that drill bit center punch is just perfect for hurting your fingers , when you hit them between the hammer and bit !
1. Совет, использовать сломанное сверло как гвоздь или шуруп чтоб вешать на них инструменты. Фэйл. Хрупкие сверла не самый лучший выбор.
2.Совет. Стамеска из хвостовика сверла. Тоже фэйл. Хвостовик делается из мягкой, не легированной стали низкого качества, для стамески не подходящий.
и придерживать заготовку под ручку, через пилу, тоже не очень умно))
Хвостовик скорее всего и из той же стали если сверло не гиганское, другое дело что он не закален. Получится мягкая стамеска которую легко сломать у ручки.
Для стамески лучше перетачивать режущую часть сверла. В идеале нагреть горелкой до красна, раскрутить в пластину и проковать/выровнять. Придать форму, закалить режущую часть и заточить.
В этом варианте будет отличная стамеска.👍
Для повешать инструмент - выдержит. Нагрузки нет. Другое дело, что неэффективно - нет шляпки/зацепа - будет падать в самый неподходящий момент.
Для этого всё же лучше по старинке - гвозди или шурупы/саморезы.

I just re-sharpen them on the bench grinder. Dress the wheel first and adjust the tool rest if necessary.

For the bigger drills, drill bit companies friction weld a shank onto the drill blank so using that end for a chisel seems to be a moot point as it will not be the same grade tool steel as the blank.
Of course the drill companies have no interest in these "secrets" as suggested in this video and if anything they would advise to get the right tool for the right job and not cut corners for safety reasons.

It is to be hoped that as we age we gain experience (and intelligence) sufficient to enable us to determine when and how 'rules' can (and should) be ignored.
Unless they're prepared to blindly follow dictators, for ANY and EVERY 'rule' intelligent adults should / must always ask and investigate 'why' / 'why not'. What will happen if I ignore this 'rule'?

What 'value' does this 'rule' afford?
Is this a 'rule' or simply a 'general recommendation'?
Intelligent adults need to follow the example of innocent children.
When told 'you must do this' or 'you must not do this' - ask WHY?
If one doesn't ask why one will never understand whether the 'rule' has value or requires amendment / abolishment - eg a 'rule' establishing a 'right to bear arms' written in a time of turmoil and single shot muzzle-loading smooth-bore muskets.

If you heat a drill to the point it changes color at all it becomes super brittle and will break like glass., is why when you sharpen them you have to go easy because itll just break first cut.. and id be worried about using any of them as hammers or punches because my eyes tend to attract flying metal shards. Even with glasses on somehow i always manage to get a piece in my eyes..

Most bits commonly sold have an off center point that only becomes apparent when used on precision machine tools.

Use drill bit as chisel doesn't even to cut the blade. Just simply sharpen the backside. Just like tip no 1.

3.Совет. Сваривать электродуговой сваркой высоколегированную сталь сверла недопустимо. Сварочный шов лопнет.
4. Совет. Нормально. Кернер из сверел- нормальная штука.
5. Совет. Переточить сломанное сверло это даже не совет, а то до чего любой здравомыслящий человек додумается без всяких видео на Ютубе.

@@thaddeustroyer You should. I have used the side of a grinding wheel. I'm very careful. It's not recommended, it can be dangerous, and shouldn't be encouraged for amateurs. Grinding non ferrous metals on a wheel designed for ferrous metals can be dangerous as well. Non ferrous metals can clog and be impacted into the wheel causing it to grenade.
OMG, Don't fret about using the side of a grinding wheel. Sharpening a drill bit isn't going to make it "grenade".

Было дело, на ВАЗ-2105 срезало шпонку между распредвалом и звездой ГРМ, из-за того что я не основательно зафиксировал гайку на звезде. Я взял сломанное сверло на 6, его гладкое основание идеально встало на место родной шпонки.
