An attempt to motivate and clarify Software-Defined Networking (SDN)

  • This tech talk is a guest keynote given at Ericsson Research by Scott Shenker, Professor at the University of California in Berkeley, Vice President of the International Computer Science Institute, and co- founder of Nicira Networks. Scott discusses the intellectual and practical weakness of today's foundations of networking, and argues that they can be strengthened by introducing cleaner abstractions, rather than managing the ever-growing complexity of protocols. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is an instantiation of such abstractions that promises to create a more evolvable architecture for the Internet.

    In view to learn SDN i went through lot of material , went through many network organizations technical documents , but when i saw this video i got the real idea what really a SDN is , what they did with control plane , where openflow lies , what abstraction is , what is the role of a function . Really a big thank you from me to you . Thanks

    This was an excellent talk! I ran across this trying to learn about vxlans, and this was a very welcome "heads up" talk about what we're really trying to achieve with all of this.

    Wao finally a change into network management very innovative but whats the difference configuring the device remotely as we now do it. Don't get me wrong it looks good but think about also on the additional bandwidth usage from the SDN and one point of failure versus today each device is independent. GREAT TRAINER; KNOWLEDGE, FUNNY AND NOT BORING...

    "they violate the principle that implementations details should be hidden".
    well, we have the same problem with programming. C/C++ are both big violators in this area, mainly because you can fiddle with the implementation from outside. This would be like HTTP diddling with the ethernet flow control

    Network management system (NMS) is one thing and SDN is another. I guess you didn't see your own presentation. SDN is changing the hardware as we know it and migrating it into software components that will allow the programming of the network elements to behave like YOU want. See the video again and their a BOTTLENECK if look at the big picture and not at the features your selling.
