So glad that this has been immortalized. I saw this live, and then many years later was able to see the next generation of it all with Savion Glover in the role of David, and Mercer Ellington leading the band

As a teenager saw and heard another version by Briggs and Ellington on CBC tv Canada in '66. Blown away by Bunny Briggs - his dancing was a boneless sway. Thanks for posting.

Thinking about how this came about during in 1965 the momentous '60s decade, you realize even more how wonderful this creation was needed.

I just hit 17 about that time. Tap-Dancing was the thing when I was young! I hope that people never forget the contribution that Tap-Dancing made to modern dance all over the world. Thanks Joseph!

Most of the black greats were taught the way the dance was supposed to be taught, from person to person listening imitating and adding one's own flare to the dance. That's as formal as it gets. That's why they had so many different styles. No class needed!

There was a poster for Bunny appearing at the Apollo in February, 1961. Also on the bill for the month: Brook Benton, The Flamingos, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin ("the exciting new singer"), LIttle Anthony & the Imperials.
