It's not an uncommon thing... where elite athletes have intense, uncompromising parents. But it is up to the athletes when they become old to put in some boundaries. That said, it can be difficult to do when you're a millionaire... everyone wants a piece of you and your parents are often the only people you can truth to not exploit you.

Same security guy came at me back in May or June of this year bright and early on a Sunday morning. I commented on a post about his contract expectations “makes sense this guy is all about the money” and he went off on me about being fat, a nobody, I wish I was him (security guy, not Marner) I asked him repeatedly how this behavior helps Marner. And it was met with more and more insults. Bragged about him hanging out with celebrities, and asked if I hate max Domi now. Because he works with him too.
He’s a really messed up clown, and the NHL should be looking into him.

Wendel Clark, Doug Gilmour, Darryl Sittler, Borje Salming are icons in Toronto, and never won a cup...why? Because they bled blue and white and left everything out there on the ice!!! Very simple, we can't say the same for Marner. He is not a leader or a winner.

  • @richardleslie904

After he was drafted by the Leafs and while he was still in the OHL I went to see the Knights play in Mississauga. And Marner basically did whatever the hell he wanted. Dale Hunter (coach) let him run his own ice time the entire game. When Marner wanted to jump on he would call the right winger on the ice to the bench and hop on. And his shift ended when he decided. I watched him stay out for an entire 4 minute high sticking penalty when the Knights had the PP while other forwards changed multiple times. In the 3rd period a Steelhead player high sticked Marner and knocked his helmet off. A penalty was called. But not one Knights player came to Marner's aid. They all just watched. I came away from that game very unimpressed with the guy and it seemed his teammates were not crazy about him. We all know "the code" when it comes to star players....you can't touch them without starting a war. That's not how his teammates reacted at all. It made me wonder what the younger guys on the Knights must have thought about this situation....a star player yes....but with one set of rules for him and which did not apply to any of the other players. The sense of entitlement was there already in Junior hockey. He brought it with him into the NHL. I can imagine his dad haranguing Dale Hunter relentlessly about ice time and who knows what other team rules.....and Hunter throwing his hands up and saying "fine do the hell whatever you want but if you don't produce I'll trade you to Saginaw". And there it is....he's always been a whiny little prima donna. I saw it myself and nothing that happened in his time as a Leaf came as a surprise to me. I am betting that Mark Hunter (Leaf scout) drafted Mitch on the recommendation of his brother due to the talent and with the thought that Mike Babcock would bring him down to earth with a smack down. The war was on from day 1 of his Leaf career....I am surmising. All the trouble with Babcock was him trying to lay down the law to Mitch and it not working. That's my take. Babcock didn't even want him and I think with good reason. He'd seen the Marner show no doubt and heard the stories. So there it is.

The problem I have with Mitch Marner, not being a Leaf fan is he’s keeping the drama going. Then wants to act like a victim. Talking about the pressure in Toronto, and how he was car jacked, making Toronto “unsafe” for his family. Bro you have MILLIONS!!! Like be serious. You’re MOVING into Mob city, notorious for CRIME AND SCANDALS!! How is the family safe?. Anyways there’s my rant. It’s just an “Toronto grown” boy becoming a family man.

@MikeGates2010 Here's the real facts about Marner in terms of hockey he shuts down in the playoffs doesn't shine like he does in Regular Season unfortunately which his fans' exspectations are very high ultimately and demandingly to the point of going to his home plastering his address online backed with threats where Marner had to hire Security for two weeks afraid of being violated criminally by them and their physical kind..
Marner just wanted to open another door to bail out of Toronto sick of the fans' threats and verbal abuse.
However Marner & his wife made the decision to go to Vegas while Marner signed the dotted line to the Vegas 9 year contract or 8 somewhere in the neighborhood of that contractual agreement and I wish him the best of luck as well for his family maybe they might have a number two child in 2026/27..
As a Leaf fan I loved Marner he was an incredible player on Toronto but he needed to turn over some new rocks to see what would come crawling out to the light which in hopes for him getting a Stanely Cup and I hope he damn well gets one transitioning into a more physical and defense play guy giving him that full 360 jump turn around to his ultimate goal snagging his first NHL Lord Stanely..
Good luck Marner I hope u get at least one NHL Cup b4 ur retired my friend.. Oh and regards to those clinically crazy fans of Marner just let go while being more civilized acting ur age not ur show size for once.

Actually, fans and the media in MTl have been vicious at times with Price, you can even find a clip of him tearing up while getting an ovation at the Bell Center because he had been criticized non stop for months.
However, it never happened during or after the playoffs, he was the first to blame himself when he was the reason the team went so far in the playoffs, every time.

To set the record straight: there’s no public evidence (screenshots, posts, receipts) of Mitch Marner’s home address being leaked online. After that, a lot of speculation circulated online, including claims about his address being “posted” but nothing has ever been verified or published by credible outlets. If there had been an actual public doxxing, you’re right the media would at least acknowledge it (with redactions) to substantiate the claim. Since they haven’t, it strongly suggests it was rumor rather than fact.

It’s such an interesting contrast to me between Marner and Sheldon Keefe, who REALLY took the brunt of the blame and got major threats, but who chose to still live in the Toronto metro after he started coaching in Jersey. He rents a place in Jersey and his family stayed in Toronto, because he said that’s their home (especially with his kids’ ages and place in life). He is clearly still very close with a lot of Toronto people, including media, despite them letting him go. He managed to do it all very, very well.
(Now, I will say, as a Devils fan, I am rooting for him to win a cup with us before the Leafs, and maaaaybe some of that is some anti-Leafs-fan shadenfreude, but it’s mostly just that he’s our coach now.)

As a complete outsider I can kinda see how Marner looks at Vegas and loves it, because if he goes to the strip nobody would recognize him or even care that it is him. On the other way in Toronto it seems that every single person knows him and wants to talk to him in a positive or negative way there which could be amazingly bothering especially if the fans are that crazy they would leak his home.

    • @sketchyweekend4503
      @sketchyweekend4503 7 months ago +3

Not really, man. Nylander takes the subway to games and I see him everywhere in Yorkville. People leave him alone, and if they don't, it's to yell "hey Willie". I worked at a restaurant near the arena and every Toronto athlete you can think of stopped by and they were always left alone.
The fans suck is just code for "in other markets, the media doesn't care if I fail". Total loser attitude and we saw how ROR fared in the anonymity of Nashville last season.

The "Marner camp" seems to believe they can control what is being said about this particular player, and that is probably the root of the problem.

The frustration with Marner goes way beyond just his on-ice playoff numbers. Fans can live with a player underperforming if they own it and show a bit of accountability. What rubs people the wrong way with Marner is the combination of disappointing playoff production plus the perception of entitlement, excuse-making, and deflecting responsibility. Not once have I ever watched a Marner interview and come away with the feeling that he took any accountability.
And the whole “I didn’t feel safe here for two years” comment without ever requesting a trade feels contradictory, and it plays into the narrative that he leans on dramatics when things get tough instead of just saying “I need to be better”. MLSE actually did an investigation into those supposed threats and didn’t find anything. "The Leafs investigated the threats against Marner. At the time, they determined that the forward did not need more security. Instead, the team felt like the threats were empty, and a response was not necessary."
Never asking for a trade makes it feel like he was lying, or at best exaggerating, to save face. Add in the stories about his dad’s heavy involvement, the media games during contract talks, and his security guard being aggressive online, and it all fuels the sense that he lives in a bubble and doesn’t really connect with the fanbase.

  • @crafting_after_midnight4154

I personally think Mitch just wanted to leave a long time ago. His mind was made up. It showed in his performance on the ice. He was simply not "there" It has nothing to do with the fans and I'm tired of them blaming the fans. Nylander takes the TTC so it's not a fan issue. Sure, there are bad apples with the fans, but these bad apples do not represent all of the fans. It was not just Mitch who failed. The whole team failed. A change had to be made. The mix was not working. Great player, but we have to move on.

Both Marner and Ferris are full of it. There was no reason for any of this after the fact. Opinions of this player were set long ago, and it just shows how out of touch with the real underlying issues Marner and his group have always been. Mitch claiming that this came down to some inexcusable actions by fans after this year's loss to the Cats is beyond desperate, especially when news came out that he had already decided to leave over a year ago, that he and his family were shopping for homes in Vegas at a short break in the season, plus several hints from players and insiders throughout the year.
Mitch's father was attacked because he was known throughout Ontario to be the epitome of an overbearing hockey dad, and that continued when he became the father of a prominent Maple Leaf. He routinely made critical comments about other players in support of his son until someone finally convinced him to button it.
Mitch's Mom allegedly had already earned a reputation for being condescending to the mothers of other Leaf players, and it supposedly came to a boil on an early Mom's trip.
Ferris' methods of campaigning for his client hurt the bargaining power of other Leafs and the roster construction of the team. On and on, but these two clowns always blamed the team and the fans. The majority of fans have wanted to move on longer than Mitch, despite his prodigious talent.

Honestly guys if you were an NHL player and played for your home city. Even if you were dominate in the regular season, one of the best in the leagues and then consistently took a step back in the playoffs like Mitch has.. would you really WANT to put up with constant criticism and disdain and the whole fanbase thinking they don’t need you and you’re a reason why you’re losing games? Or would you prefer to not have that noise there? I don’t think nearly anybody would willing choose criticism if all else was equal. Fairly. Now is Marners camp spinning this to make him look like an angel and the fanbase hating on him to look like the only real reason he left? Definitely seems like it. I don’t blame him, but I agree. There’s no need for his camp to be out here saying all these things. Just let it go. You’re already in a new city on a new team. Let your success prove you made the right decision here

I don't think it's fair to say that since Tavares, Matthews, and Nylander didn't have trash thrown on their front lawn and get doxxed and deal with threats to their families that the problem must just be with Marner. Toronto needs to have a meaningful conversation about the tiny amount of their "fans" who are clearly going way too far. Blaming players for the actions of fans who are just plain wrong isn't right. We should all be agreeing right now that there is *never* a case where it's ok to doxx players, threaten their families, or go to their frickin houses. It's just not ok, and even the worst players shouldn't be having that happen to them. Even Matt Cooke didn't deserve to have people show up at his house.

The only thing I learned here is Marner lives rent free is Leaf Fan's head. The hate is so over the top, there's no way they aren't constantly thinking about him. This comment section is evidence of that. If you really didn't care, you'd be indifferent. When you hate, it's because you actually DO care positively or negatively. He's gone now, it doesn't matter.
I think Marner is completely correct. I think the fans are correct. Both things can be completely true.
At the end of the day, however, it was the Front Office that created this situation. They mismanaged their cap. They then constructed a weak team around a front loaded core and then the team lost. Over and over and over.
People complaining about Marner's performance is funny... because AM34 has 0.86 PPG in the playoffs. Marner was 0.90.
But sure... Marner is the problem. The basic truth, we kept 75% of a core that couldn't win and all underperformed.
Marner was a convenient scapegoat. I can predict this season: We lose in the first round because literally nothing was changed. We just log a good regular season player. Which might sound like nothing... but then you realize that you need to make the playoffs before winning them.

I’m writing this as a habs fan. Ultimately there are three parties all at fault here. Marner didnt play up to the standards he set for himself in regular season and with his contract. The fans are also at fault. I think as fans we are always harder on local players than others. Habs fan did it to Richer and Brisebois. I havent heard the same level of critisism for matthews who was just as invisible as marner in the playoffs. And the third party involved was the team. From babcock playing mindgames with him, the team overly sticking to a plan that wasnt working (core 4) and not changing coach earlier… this breakup was written in the stars and gets worse because it happened a couple years too late
