I would go as far as to say “Should” have failed spectacularly, but you’re right, the writing and (at the time) animation made it work. The writing still holds up today despite the now dated animation. Death of Dinobot episode writing still holds up to me as one of the most well written episodes in all of transformers.
Beast Wars is how you do a follow-up series. Making something new while also not forgetting the roots of the franchise. And Kenner did a bang up job with the toys. Congratulations on 100!
I've always felt that Optimus Primal is the kind of guy I'd want to work for. He can be tough and stern, but he cares about his crew and connects with them on a personal level. He's not just the Maximals' captain, he's their friend.
Happy 100th episode. And if Gary Chalk is okay with reprising his role as Optimus Prime from the Unicron Trilogy after Peter Cullen retires. I think that idea would be just prime.
🎉 Bless your Heart and Soul AKA Spark Rodimus Primal! By having your 100th episode released just right after my 30th Birthday, I now have 2 Transformers related things to celebrate forever at the same time each year. This retrospective, and the first airing of Armada! That along with the very impressive research as usual, I just couldn't thank you anymore! Also I must bless and thank Gary Chalk for making that cameo at the end, because that was just Prime!!! No pun intended. 😊
Personally, I like him, and I think his gorilla form is pretty cool. You'd expect a wolf or lion form for a leader type character, so an ape is kind of a welcome surprise. Also, the fact that his name and title is Primal and he's a primate is creative.
"RodimusPrimal dong a retrospective of Optimus Primal? Now that's surprising. What isn't surprising is how much money Sophie Lents saved by switching to Geico."
Beast Wars was truly peak television, and Optimus Primal was at the centre of it all. A courageous, empathetic and resourceful leader, you could feel that he truly cared about his soldiers, despite how often they would test his patience. And of course, all of this was beautifully portrayed by Gary Chalk, who's honestly my favourite Optimus VA to this day (both Prime and Primal). Thank you for this video returning to munky.
Fantastic episode! Over the years I’ve come to genuinely appreciate Primal for who he is as a character. Once I stopped comparing him to Optimus I really began enjoying him as a personal favorite.
Beast wars was one of the very first cartoons I watched as a kid and to say it had an impact would be an understatement lol Basically I loved 98% of the cast in their own unique way but for me......... Optimus Primal was my role model. He was kind, courageous, wise, resourceful, caring, hilarious and a hero. If there was anybody I wanted to be when I grew up, it was him Fast forward several decades later and I still say that Primal is my hero and I took all the lessons he demonstrated in the show to heart and now I'm a leader in my own way. And that's just prime
Glad to see the Kong refrences, as that is what they were thinking with the ape and t-rex beast modes. Originally Optimus was supposed to be big like kong. of course the show runner went in a wildly and in my opinion superior direction. primal being his own bot helped keep Optimus comparisons down and let people who wanted the truck give the show more of a chance.
I remember Garry Chalk answering quiz in a supernova event (this was years ago) about the BW Optimus, saying he was more human then any other Optimus Prime and was willing to admit he makes mistakes and that's all I can recall.
That is correct. Garry was able to make the character his own instead of mimicking Cullen because as a warm-blooded mammal, Primal’s voice and personality was to be more warm, more emotional instead of robotic, and he was an imperfect, younger, inexperienced leader. Garry will always be the OG Primal just like Cullen is the OG Prime. Two totally different characters and two totally different takes on Optimus.

Dammit man. I used to have the bat Optimus primal and alligator Megatron with the little comic. Lost them to time. And I missed the Power of the Primes Optimal Optimus so I'm really hoping they do another Optimal Optimus figure soon. Having Gary Chalk at the end is awesome. I grew up with beast wars so hearing his voice REALLY takes me back. Especially when he says "MAXIMIZE" or "Well that's just prime" lol. Solid retrospective video.
2:13 lol I never knew that. Azrael is my favorite comic book character. 8:58 I wish we got a repaint of Kingdom Optimus Primal in Universe colors. Woot, Gary Chalk himself at the end
I know there are many factors against it bird I still would love a short movie with Optimus prime and primal, the actual versions from the original cartoons, voiced by Peter Cullen and Garry Chalk respectfully, tying up the original G1 cartoon (final defeat of Galvatron and Zarak), the time between the original cartoon up to beast wars, etc. Or at least just a team up of the original voice actors as their characters in a random adventure, or something. Nothing too long or involved or anything. Just at least a chance to see Cullen and Chalk interact together in one thing at least once as their characters. I know there are many many things that is getting in the way of that. But a fan can dream can't they? Lol
It’s shocking we NEVER ONCE has Gary Chalk Optimus Primal and David Kaye Megatron interact with Peter Cullen Optimus Prime and Frank Welker Megatron with their respective original voices (we did kind of get that in Japanese media but I mean in the U.S. and not in comics)
Primal was always an honorable and respected leader, imo. I enjoyed Beast Wars very much and am pleased it renewed interest in The Transformers franchise. This retrospective was certainly a great testament to the character, but Gary Chalk sitting in a kitchen wearing his Christmas onsie.....well, that's just Prime.
This was so wonderful. I loved watching beast wars when I would get ready for school. Also I love it so much I know the episodes by heat that to help me sleep I say the first few lines of either the spark or aftermath & i hear the episode in my head and it helps me sleep. I hope when you get around to doing Rat Trap’s retrospective you hopefully use the clip from the episode “the low road” when rat trap & dinobot go to get the counter virus for rhinox with the conversation starting with “are you sure about this chopper face” & ending with “right now I don’t really care which” plus we get a “shut up rat trap” in that
I knew you’d do a retrospective on the big ape last time you did a livestream and gave a hint at the next retrospective. When you said it had something to do with how you got your name, and I called it!
I would love to see a Unicron retrospective, as well as a deep dive into the Binaltech stories, comparing the comic adaptations of the movie to the movie itself, and some more info on the Diaclone toyline. Like, coloring hiccups, quirkiness in character designs, etc. I know most of these videos mention them, but I'd like to see them all compiled in one spot.
BW is my G1, through re-runs. I was super happy Hasbro gave us quite accurate chug Primal figure as part of Kingdom line. Even happier we got almost all cartoon characters - we're missing some TM & TMII versions, Rampage, Depthcharge (Kingdom Cyclonus could be retooled into one), Quickstrike and proper Transmutate...
This was an Incredible Masterpiece for Optimus Prime’s Descendant Optimus Primal. My Ranking of Optimus Primal in The Transformers Franchise 1: Transformers Beast Era (Gary Chalk) 2: Tranaformers Rebooted Film Series (Ron Perlman) 3: Transformers Prime Wars Trilogy (Ron Perlman) 4: Transformers War For Cybertron Trilogy (Justin Pierce)
Like Optimus Prime, Optimus Primal always comes back. 0:33 Interesting fact, sense Batman's back is not fit sense Bane broke it, Michael become Batman and his character Azrial and also cool by Kenner. 2:13 We all his role as Optimus Primal, Garry Chalk. 3:48 and this. 4:20 Thank you, Rhinox. 5:42 Optimus's father keeps his business in shape, his employees, and buys toys for his son. Being a good father. 12:28 Even the show is bad, but Ron Perlman did it as well as OP. 14:38 Hopefully, Hasbro makes Nyx into a cool Transformers toy, she carry Primal's original beast form. She is awesome. 15:55 Nice origin story and good voicing him. 17:13 Agree. 18:17 Good fact and I like that part. 18:32 He is the ancestor of Optimus Prime, but is Optimus Primal. Hello our friend. 18:57 Awesome work and great history of Commander of the Maximals, I enjoy, now Maximus.
I always thought that the Optimal Optimus form was a result of the Matrix upgrading him when he temporarily held it and Prime's spark, similar to Hot Rod to Rodimus.
Now that's just Prime! Optimus Primal as a gorilla will always be iconic, but I'd love to see Hasbro/Takara revisit Bat-timus Primal, even just a figure somewhere in the Legacy line. Also, I know Garry Chalk voiced Optimus Prime in Armada, but I didn't know he voiced Guts Man in Ruby Sphere's Mega Man series. P.S. MONKE (Sorry I couldn't help it)
Awesome Optimus Primal is my top favorite characters from not only Transformers Beasts Wars but also the Transformers franchise as a whole , I like his gorilla alt mode and for being slightly different than Optimus Prime
So, we've reached the Boss Monkey himself. Well, that's just Prime. Optimus Primal is my favourite of all the Maximals. And Garry Chalk and Ron Perlman are my favourite voice actors. I was so happy when he got his big screen debut in Rise of the Beasts.
My favorite Boss Monke of all time (among one of my favorite Transformers to) BIG BOT!!! His ancestor would be proud of him, like when he lets Tankor/Rhinox choose to go his own way rather than force him to be on the side of the Maximals again. "Megatron wants a harmonious Cybertron, but harmony without freewill isn't harmony at all."
Roddy, my man! Congratulations on your 100th Retrospective! Keep up the awesome content coming for the next 100 more🤘 Side note, I pre-ordered Agent Knight and oh my what a long long wait it is going to be for me as the delivery date is mid-February 2025.
Primal is my favorite Prime. I always use his catchphrase "That's just Prime." Mostly because I'd like to see who recognizes it. I was so disappointed that Primal didn't say the line the the Rise of the Beast movie.
Finally! I have been waiting for this one!. I love Primal! But I must say... Megatron was my favorite on beast wars! Can't wait for his retrospective as well!
A down to earth (or cybertron) Leader making the most of his sometimes dysfunctional team on a hostile world, transforming into a mighty silverback gorilla
Ya know I've done a lot of new videos this past year too, right? Wheelie, Perceptor, Beachcomber, Hoist, Warpath, Scourge, and more. When I do make a re-make it's with good reason.
Optimus Prime is my "guy," but Primal is not far behind. I loved the fact that he was inexperienced as a leader during war, having been an explorer by nature. It is interesting that later versions of Prime took on this trait, as well (notably, Animated, but Prime not being a natural leader has been seen in other media, as well). I do think Primal is Rodimus Prime done right. There was so much potential with Rodimus that was squandered during Season 3. But the young hero having leadership thrust on them is an interesting story beat, that the Beast Wars writers did so much better. I can definitely see why you are Rodimus Primal, given the similarities between the two.
I know everyone thinks Optimus Prime is the greatest and I love him. But Optimus Primal was my Optimus as a kid and still my third favorite Transformer (2 being Predacon Megatron, and 1 being Dinobot)
Don’t know why, but while I was watching this, I kept hearing some menacing baritone voice saying “Yes, ‘Tis only a matter of time before I make my grand return, YES!” Followed immediately by the whirring of a chain-gun, a gruff voice saying “I don’t think so.” and a second more snarly voice saying “And I REALLY DON’T THINK SO!”
"That...was...PRIME! I always loved how Primal was a hotheaded drill sergeant at the beginning of the Beast Wars, but then tempered his actions with patience and wisdom throughout the series. Far from being a pale imitation of Optimus Prime, Primal definitely came into his own. I never finished Beast Machines (and probably never will), so I only HEARD how it ended. Interesting to learn that Primal sacrificed himself. Must HE always die like his namesake? Hmm... Primal looked great in Rise Of The Beasts, but I felt the Maximals should have had their OWN movie with Megs and his Predacons so we could have gotten to know them all---THEN be integrated with the Bots and Cons later. Ah, well. HAPPY ONE HUNDREDTH, RODIMUS! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE! Whoops! Wrong catchphrase!
'A leader who struggles on despite bickering teammates, cunning adversaries, and an increasingly bad situation, yet remains calm and caring towards those in his care, is well deserving of praise.' --Zach Baringer, TFW2005 While I respect Optimus Prime's place in the mythology I do wish more Transformers media would experiment more with different heroic leaders, different Primes.
If you read the pack in comic, it in fact does NOT suggest they are Optimus Prime and Galvatron in new forms, but instead clearly suggests that they are brand new characters, Optimus Primal and (a new) Megatron.
Been waiting for this since Rise of the Beasts, can you do thunderwing episode I’ve been really curious about his history ever since the Matrix episode.

Excellent!
Well this look at Optimus Primal was just prime!!
Very cool closing
BW is my G1, through re-runs. I was super happy Hasbro gave us quite accurate chug Primal figure as part of Kingdom line. Even happier we got almost all cartoon characters - we're missing some TM & TMII versions, Rampage, Depthcharge (Kingdom Cyclonus could be retooled into one), Quickstrike and proper Transmutate...
I always liked his Optimal Optimus form the best! It's the coolest version!
Agreed. All of his Beast Wars forms were great but that took the cake.
Man beast wars was so far ahead of it's time.
Well That’s just Prime!
You actually got Primal's actor for this video. That's awsome!
I still kept my Power Of The Primes Optimal Optimus toy figure all these years now, but it was still one of my favorite upgraded Maximal character.
😅😂😊 love the ending.
This was an Incredible Masterpiece for Optimus Prime’s Descendant Optimus Primal.
My Ranking of Optimus Primal in The Transformers Franchise
1: Transformers Beast Era (Gary Chalk)
2: Tranaformers Rebooted Film Series (Ron Perlman)
3: Transformers Prime Wars Trilogy (Ron Perlman)
4: Transformers War For Cybertron Trilogy (Justin Pierce)
Thank you Gary Chalk and Ron Perlman
Optimus Primal *handshake* Rodimus Prime
Being hated at first before slowly becoming fan favorites
I always thought that the Optimal Optimus form was a result of the Matrix upgrading him when he temporarily held it and Prime's spark, similar to Hot Rod to Rodimus.
Well, that's just PRIME!!
P.S. MONKE (Sorry I couldn't help it)
Stellar retrospective my friend, I had eagerly waited for this one. He's a great leader, probably one of the best in animation. Great work Joe!
Thanks! I put a lot of effort into this one! I was thrilled to have Garry make a cameo appearance for it too!
@RodimusPrimal He's such a great man, that's always a pleasure
Thanks for sharing this!
This is the one right here.
Primal has been my childhood Optimus, and always will. Nothing against Prime, though.
10:30 And the best part is that Primal’s Japanese voice is the same man who voices DIO from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure AND Jin Kazama from Tekken
Yare Yare Daze!
My favorite Boss Monke of all time (among one of my favorite Transformers to)
BIG BOT!!!
Keep up the awesome content coming for the next 100 more🤘
Side note, I pre-ordered Agent Knight and oh my what a long long wait it is going to be for me as the delivery date is mid-February 2025.
Can't wait for Agent Knight. Thanks! Here's to 100 more indeed!
Primal is my favorite Prime. I always use his catchphrase "That's just Prime." Mostly because I'd like to see who recognizes it. I was so disappointed that Primal didn't say the line the the Rise of the Beast movie.
Ok this video was fantastic
Thanks! Till all are one!
@@RodimusPrimal Till all are one
Finally! I have been waiting for this one!. I love Primal! But I must say... Megatron was my favorite on beast wars! Can't wait for his retrospective as well!
Love the love for Bert the stormtrooper.
A down to earth (or cybertron) Leader making the most of his sometimes dysfunctional team on a hostile world, transforming into a mighty silverback gorilla
Not the BM OP toy saying, “ the seeds of the future lie buried in the past” 😂
Yep. My toy. I cannot find where the battery compartment is.
@@RodimusPrimal that’s awesome!
Finally a new Retrospective episode on a Maximal. Not just a repeat of an existing video. Of Rodimus primal’s
Ya know I've done a lot of new videos this past year too, right? Wheelie, Perceptor, Beachcomber, Hoist, Warpath, Scourge, and more. When I do make a re-make it's with good reason.
@@RodimusPrimal ok
On the same day the Beast Wars Album OST is released no less, they’re rocking bangers!
Big bot Primal deserves a spotlight in transformers.
A gorilla is such a cool decision for a leader, instead of a lion like Leo Prime.
I know everyone thinks Optimus Prime is the greatest and I love him.
But Optimus Primal was my Optimus as a kid and still my third favorite Transformer (2 being Predacon Megatron, and 1 being Dinobot)
Don’t know why, but while I was watching this, I kept hearing some menacing baritone voice saying “Yes, ‘Tis only a matter of time before I make my grand return, YES!”
Followed immediately by the whirring of a chain-gun, a gruff voice saying “I don’t think so.” and a second more snarly voice saying “And I REALLY DON’T THINK SO!”
Great video.
'A leader who struggles on despite bickering teammates, cunning adversaries, and an increasingly bad situation, yet remains calm and caring towards those in his care, is well deserving of praise.' --Zach Baringer, TFW2005
While I respect Optimus Prime's place in the mythology I do wish more Transformers media would experiment more with different heroic leaders, different Primes.
Optimus primal a true successor to Optimus prime and a powerful transformer for both Autobots & Maximals
