Lyrics composed by Toti and Francis West
    KUPU
    E ua e te ua
Tāheke i runga (i) aku parekawakawa
    Kei whea rā he whakamamahutanga
    Mō tōku ngākau marū, e
Ko te roimata taku kai i te ao, i te pō e
    Auē
I ngā roimata e puke ana i aku kamo
Waipuke ana te riri i taku ate
    Mate pukupuku! Ūpokokōhua!
    He kōkopurangi
Ko te ora tāngata hei kai māu e
    Mate pukupuku! Ūpokokōhua!
I haramai koe i te toto pirau o te pākehā
    Pākehakeha, urutā mate pukupuku
    Ūpokokōhua e!
    Hā!
    E, Roi, e 2
    He kirikawa ki te riri
Nāu rā tō ope tauā wāhine
    Wāhine toa
    Wāhine haka
    Wāhine Māori mana motuhake
Ko koe te manu taki e
O te kawau mārō o te motu!
    Ākina!
Ākina te riri ki te mate pukupuku
Ko ngā mata tini tō hikuroa e
    Rū ana te whenua
    Tutū te puehu
    Ka riro koe
    Hei ika i te ati
    Ki te pae whakarauora wāhine
    Āhāhā!
He ngaki mate te haere ake nei!
    Tukitukia!
    Werowerohia!
    Tukitukia!
    Werowerohia!
    Mātua mā!
Hikina tō rau ki a Mate Pukupuku
Tiakina tō mea! He oranga wāhine!
Tiakina tō mea! Ko te whare tangata!
Tiakina tō mea! He oranga whakapapa!
Kei moumou, kei moumou te hinganga
    o te huia tū rae
Tēnei te rau-o-Roi e tū nei
Mō te whakarauora wāhine te take
    Mate pukupuku! Ūpokokōhua e!
    Hī!
    LYRICS
    May the rain fall
    On my wreath of kawakawa
Where is a place of shelter/healing
    For my bruised heart
For my tears (like the rain) shall be food for
    me, day and night
As tears well-up in my eyes
Anger floods my heart of hearts
    Cancer! Ūpokokōhua!
    You are a leech
And the life force of man is your food
    Cancer! Ūpokokōhua!
You came here on the rotten blood of Pākehā
Pākehā, the cause of the plague cancer
    Ūpokokōhua!
    Dear Talei
    A veteran warrior
You are responsible for a war party of women
    Strong women
    Women of haka
    Māori women of mana motuhake
    You are the leader
Of the kawau mārō of the country
    Advance!
    Into the battle against cancer
    The multitudes follow you!
    The earth shakes
    And dust of war rises
    You are taken
    As the first slain
On the battle field of womens health
    Āhāhā!
    We shall avenge your death!
    Attack!
    Stab repeatedly!
    Attack!
    Penetrate!
    Dear parents!
Raise your blade of war against Cancer
Smear your mea! For life of women!
Smear your mea! The birthplace of man!
Smear your mea! To perpetuate whakapapa!
Lest our leaders life be wasted without
    purpose
These are the hundred blades of Talei
    Fighting for womens health!
    Cancer! Ūpokokōhua e!
    Hī!

This is one of the best things I’ve ever seen in my life, I actually got a little emotional watching it. I know I’m just some white American dude, but I absolutely LOVE hakas and to see it done in tribute to someone makes it so much more special. I’m really glad I found this video. Thank you for posting it!

Talei Morrison was one of the top female performers in the maori performing arts realm and she developed cervical cancer a few years ago. Rather than sitting back and allowing herself to be overcome by it, she started a campaign called smear your mea, a campaign that reached great heights in new zealand before her passing. Her work while suffering her own cancer has helped raise awareness and no doubt saved multiple lives due to it as well

Her son also performed in this item for us, so it was a special item to dedicate to not only his mum, but a wahine toa for Māori communities all over the nation.
