You probably know this, but I only learnt this very recently that a when a young girl dies, they are considered to be goddesses and for me that scene when the donkey climbs the hill and stands next to his sister made such an impact after that. And throughout that song when the whole village gets ready, I was thinking it meant he was thinking of all the ghosts haunting the village, but in retrospect it's also the people who look after them and that song sung by them makes so much more sense. Anyway after I heard that my brain exploded and that was all I could think about.
The symbolism of the Butterfly when the old men are beaten up in the police station to show oppression and later how CGI butterflies were created to show freedom in the later half. .
Loved the parallels between the donkey's front legs being tied and the villagers being held back. As the donkey keeps struggling to break free, so do the villagers. It all comes to a head when the donkey's feet are untied at the same time that Karnan snaps and destroys the bus.
When Karnan and his friends destroys the police station, you can see a scene where Ambedkar's picture oscillates. This scene symbolises the Tension between Constitutional Morality and Social Morality. Also indicates Like Ambedkar symbolically telling violence is not the answer to each question.

One thing that Mari Selvaraj and Selva RK (editor of the film) have beautifully captured is the 'lifestyle' aspect of this movie (he mentioned it in some interviews) because in our homes or neighbourhoods, things never happen one after the other, they happen simultaneously. Which means the scenes play out in parallel (instead of scene 1, scene 2, scene 3; it goes scene 1-2-3). This style is taken to its zenith in the interval, with the donkey being set free, Karnan's rage being unleashed on the bus, the goddess watching it with the donkey and yeman helping the lady get another vehicle to reach the hospital. This is a truly special tamil film, and I'm just so grateful that it has translated so well outside the tamil circles as well. Great review. 👍🏻😄
Not just symbolisms, Sucharitha, this masterpiece is wrapped with powerful metaphors as well. The little girl dying on the street symbolizes - how the oppression on the lower community village is made obvious; Karnan cutting the fish into two to a Mahabharatha scene where Arjun was asked to hit a fish looking at its reflection on well. Eagle preying on the chicken symbolizes - how a day in day out their community is oppressed by officials and the upper community folks. The bus stand symbolizing the effort of higher community villagers keeping Karnan's villagers confined to it.
Loved the movie and the review Sucharitha! If you notice the film is an ode to radical protest movements. Often the oppressor class conveniently shrugs off radical movements by branding them as 'violent mobs' or 'trouble-makers'. The images of breaking buses, self-immolation, blocking traffic, damaging public offices like police stations, stone pelting, etc are looked with disgust by privileged classes and cited as reasons to discredit these movements. Director Selvaraj flips this coin and shows the frustration and suffocation that results in these violence. That until oppressor is inconvenienced and violently shook, change barely seems to happen. That these are legitimate forms of protest when institutions meant to protect/help/save you rather fails and harms you. We cheer and back the oppressed dalits as we see the desperation from which this violence is stemming from. Mari Selvaraj creates such a passionate image that even the viewer wishes to join them, root for their victory against the police. But all this said, the privileged UC's would still get back to cribbing and be back to gaslighting next time buses break and roads are blocked. P.s: Coughs in farmers protests and delhi riots.
Also, just adding smthng my prof once said. That it is the violence of the likes of Bose and bhagat Singh that made Gandhi more palatable to the British. I came to see the review of the film after seeing it. But I have to tip my hat to you. What an extraordinary review! Your review made me mentally "re-view" the movie in a different light. There is real depth in the way in which you have seen the movie and deconstructed here. This is the kind of review, that goes beyond mere description, and literally opens the eyes of the viewers to appreciate the sensibility behind the movie. Brava!
I havent watched the movie yet. I am waiting for a big screen TV cos that's where I want to watch the movie. But I remember an interview by Mari Selvaraj and Pa Ranjith where they talked about how a character like Karnan in Mahabharata rises to be a hero "despite" being brought up by "lower caste" parents. This is explained away always using "upper caste" appropriation where the backstory alleges he was born a kshatriya to Kunti and hence the implication that you need to have "upper" caste blood to succeed and become a hero. Like how the oppressed castes aren't even given their own hero when he rises from those ranks. When Karna was first announced, it was very clear Mari S. wanted to retake that narrative and place the hero, karna, squarely in a dalit village. He is not secretly born a prince. He is the ostracized and yet he rises to challenge every prince in the kingdom including Krishna himself. The only way Krishna can defeat him (in mahabharata and in the movie I presume) is using unfair practices. BOth you and BR kind of missed this point and I wonder if because the director didn't repeat this motivation in promotin and this part of the story's backbone got lost. SO wanted to write it down somewhere, since you asked :) I am so glad you got to see Mari Selvaraj's work!!
I don't know how many people noticed this tiny detail but the portrait that eventually becomes Yeman's (Lal's character named after Yamraj) as a tribute for his sacrifice starts out as one of Che Guevara's. Other than that there's also the very stark parallels with King Arthur and the sword.
WHAT a detailed, highly descriptive review!! 👍👏 Was also hoping to hear some pauda talk, as the plants in the back were quietly whispering, "zarra dhyaan idhar bhi!!!". Maybe next time?
Name of the character behaved ironically than the original character.. Eg: karnan in mahabharata he is the giver. Here he is taking the rights or fighting for the rights of the people Yema.. God of death.. He takes the lives of people others instead he is taking his own life to save people Kanabiran. The police charater.. The meaning of the name is krishna.. Cos of him. Karnan dies..(original) But in the movie Karnan kills kannabiran.. (krishna)
We south Indians movies only portrays caste oppression ..all north media focus the creamy layers and fantasy..you need decades to decode this movie or either get a translator and decode it and make new review sister...
FYI All you surprised no use of mobile in the movie. I will clarify that. I watched the movie on First day in the screen. It was mentioned in the movie at the beginning "the movie based on the incidents before 1997". Due to political interference it was removed.
This is the sheer and unquestionable beauty of filmmaking. One of the best movies of 2021.Besides the fantastic music and the breathtaking performances, I loved the screenplay and how intelligently Selvaraj has inserted the symbols and metaphors into it, Specially the butterfly in the police station, perhaps the best in recent times. The tradition of slaughtering the fish in the midair can be a retold version of Mahabharata where Karna aims at the fish with his bow but later got rejected because of his caste.Such innovative and deeply layered narratives are very rare in present day Hindi cinema which hurts a lot. But being a huge admirer of South Film industry I am happier to see films like Karnan, Aarkkariyam, Nayattu, Irul.Your dedication is so very inspiring. Please keep up the great work.
Even the shirt of rajni sir that karna wear is from mani ratnam's Thalapathi which again was a unofficial biopic of Karna. I think u know that but still i mentioned in case :)
One of my friend who knows Hindu mythology said that, the symbolism where karnan and droupadi love story. In the actual Mahabharata, Draupadi rejects karna because he is a bastard. In the movie , karnan is able to aquire Draupathi which is not the case in the actual Mahabharata. And similarly every character represents a real story happened between them in the Mahabharata and what happens between them in the movie. In the actual Mahabharata, karna is not able use his weapon because of the word given to his mother, in this movie, karnan is able to use his sword and get on the horse. Where’s in the actual Mahabharata karna’s vehicle gets struck in the sand and when he was repairing his vehicle karna gets killed but in the movie karnan finally gets on his horse which is seen as a upper class vehicle in many parts of India and finally lives. Every scene has a normal meaning and also a contrary mythological meaning. I thought @baddy would discuss this but he didn’t go this deep in his review/talk. It’s Amazing to see this kind of Art @Sucharita P.S. I don’t know Mahabharata.
Name politics was/is there, since upper caste people always had/have royal names while lower caste people had given names by some upper caste person whether Village Head or Pandit. You will not found any absurd names of any upper caste person but of lower caste person. In this movie Name played important roles, Duryodhanan who was village head supported karnan while villagers got divided between whether revolt or endure, exactly like in mahabharata, duryodhan supported karna. YamaRaja is God of death and justice acc to hindu mythologies and so actor lal's character with his death awakens the system and bring justice to his village.
You cannot justify this film if you have not watched Pariyerum Perumal, the directorial debut of Mari Selvaraj. Not going to spoil anything. Pariyerum Perumal is a matured take on how to deal with this barbarism in the name of caste. Karnan was a bit of a letdown when you compare with it. P.S. - It is streaming on Amazon Prime.

People we have forgotten or are deliberately looking away from as carnage unfolds.
Can’t help but notice how well you said ‘Tamizh throughout this video :)
Thank you :)
@@SucharitaTyagi karnan . Not karn.
Brava!
Socha Tha Lockdown mein Feel Good movies Dekhunga.
Par ek ke baad ek depressing movie dekhe ja raha hu.
Sorry, haven't seen the movie, But still watched ur Review🙏
Its a true story happend in the village in tamil nadu
I believe its Immanuvel Sekaran not Che.
WHAT a detailed, highly descriptive review!! 👍👏
Was also hoping to hear some pauda talk, as the plants in the back were quietly whispering, "zarra dhyaan idhar bhi!!!".
Maybe next time?
Name of the character behaved ironically than the original character..
Eg: karnan in mahabharata he is the giver. Here he is taking the rights or fighting for the rights of the people
Yema.. God of death.. He takes the lives of people others instead he is taking his own life to save people
Kanabiran. The police charater.. The meaning of the name is krishna.. Cos of him. Karnan dies..(original) But in the movie Karnan kills kannabiran.. (krishna)
If u love karnan, also watch Asuran, Pariyerum Perumal and Mandela
Please watch and review Pareyarum perumal , mari Selvaraj 1st movie, I highly recommend on Amazon prime
We south Indians movies only portrays caste oppression ..all north media focus the creamy layers and fantasy..you need decades to decode this movie or either get a translator and decode it and make new review sister...
Relation mein recommendation ya.. was waiting for that🥲
Akka love from tamilnadu, make a combo video with baradwaj rangan sir in your channel.
Thank god for being a Dhanush fan which landed me to this gem.
FYI
All you surprised no use of mobile in the movie. I will clarify that.
I watched the movie on First day in the screen.
It was mentioned in the movie at the beginning "the movie based on the incidents before 1997".
Due to political interference it was removed.
U could have explained still elaborate... This particular type of movies are rare of its kind...
The Rosa Parks' reference is just.. chef's kiss
She avoids the word caste?? Saw her review about Paava Kadhaigal she couldn't understand that too
A Mari selvaraj magic❤
Love how tyagi ji is saying 'TAMIZH NADDDD' 😏
In orignal police destroyed all the documents and all the electronic items and destroyed the village
Real true story in. Tamil village-- karnan. Hit movie. In two states. Tamilnadu & keralam
Infact the whole mahabharata is seen in different perspectives.. A different view..
It’s Amazing to see this kind of Art @Sucharita
P.S. I don’t know Mahabharata.
Watched it yesterday, amazing movie 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
If u r not ble to understand symbolim in the movie ,then u r good reviewer🙉
when will you anglicized geniuses learn the difference between "Va" and "Wa"?
it's "Euphemism" not symbolism as many mentioned here. There is a subtle difference between these two.
Please watch BROCHEVAREVARURA on Prime
0:40 she pronounced TAMIZH NAAD perfeclty ❤️❤️
It's about caste system about in double meaning... And this is about dalit peoples too love this film😍😘👌

I 😂 feel when Hinduwalas watch South India movies struggle too much to review. Just like delhi Politicians who struggle for sharing due share in taxes, resources, rights and freedoms. I call South India not southern India. So don't drop Gyan.
