    Watched this video last night and went to Fort Street Cafe today. Got the garlic chicken & panang curry combo. I love thai curry but usually get the green one because I love eggplant. This combo was delish! Garlicky & coconutty goodness! I've seen other videos on this place but yours is what enticed me. Thanks for sharing!

    My auntie used to work at Medeiros Optical Service (where our family got our glasses) on Fort St. Mall when I was a kid, and I have many memories of walking around with my mom and shopping at Woolworth, Kress, the comic book shop, etc. How things have changed since then! I also worked at Hawai'i Pacific University one semester in the 1990s, so I ate at many places on Fort St. Mall. A lot has changed since then, too, but I like to eat there when I'm downtown, and my favorite thing to get is still the garlic chicken at Fort St. Cafe! Thanks for sharing the other 'ono grinds we can get there. Always reasonable prices and satisfying!

      @FoodFiend  10 месяцев назад +2

      Wow. What a throwback. I do remember the Woolworths and I liked looking at the arts and crafts section as a kid. I remember Marugame was a Jack In The Box and also was a Wendy's for a short while. It was much dirtier then. Now it's surprisingly clean and more business like. Mahalo again for commenting and watching!

    When I was a boy, my dad had a shop on Fort Street Mall, and I had my favorites back then. There are a lot of mediocre places around there, but it's great that you seem to have picked some of the best. I still miss the Eagle Cafe at the Blaisdell Hotel (George, the owner, died, and his son took over, then moved to Nimitz. I think that there's no relation to the "New Eagle Cafe" of nowadays). It's also nice to know there's a Marugame down there so we don't have to brave the lines in Waikiki for that.! Great work!

    • @FoodFiend
      @FoodFiend  10 месяцев назад +1

      Ah what wonderful memories. Did you know the old Blaisdell Hotel sign is still up? Doesn't look like the lights function but they didn't take it down. Interesting to see they were the ones who moved to Nimitz. I think they're definitely owned by someone else now as they offer more Filipino food. Miss the old biscuits with strawberry jam there. That's off the menu now.

    Great video Misty! Brings back memories of pre-retirement days. Fridays were usually reserved for Fort Street Cafe. That sweet little lady, would come outside to take orders if the line was long. I've had a few pirosckis from Rada's. From the crispy garlic chicken, to the the curry, to the tonkatsu, to the Filipino food, pierogi, and everything else….😋 Doner’s controversy doesn’t seem like a deal breaker to us so would love to try it too since we love Greek flavors. Hello Misty I was Googleing Food Fiend purchase products, I searched RUclips, Instagram, then lo and behold, there it was 😂 . It was on this feature segment Hole In The Wall On A Pier. Description: Logo artwork by Matt Maeda of Imagine Hawaii. I'm going to be 73 this coming March 17th. Growing up in Honolulu in the 50's , we neva have internet , I would like to thank you 😅, for that post!❤ Your show has gotten much more locally local style! If you know what I mean 😊. And you have gotten slimmer and fitter. I was wondering if you would team up with another favorite channel, simply called "Cari". I think the two of you would make a good show. It's just a suggestion 😊

      Aloha Glenn! I'm not sure why it took you to that video as I don't have any interest in making any products or merchandise to sell. Matt was nice enough to donate the artwork for the intro. I also decline any promotional products people try to have me do. 😊 Happy upcoming birthday and wishes for many more 🥳 For me the internet started in college and it would probably take 1000 years to download an MP3 song off AOL. LOL. Thank you about the slimmer thing. I don't feel that way as I am the same weight but I try to walk and run about 10k steps a day or work out in the gym for health reasons. I do enjoy Cari's channel if that is the same Cari you're talking about. I am open to collaborating but they would have to be interested as well. Plus my schedule is so jam packed I rarely have time to meet my own friends and barely get the videos out on time. Maybe one day! Have a great week! 🤙 and Mahalo for your support.

      I'm not sure how clean it is as I haven't been there in years, but there is a restroom at McDonald's? Not sure if you need a code. If really desperate you can go to any floor of the Alakea Courthouse. They have clean bathrooms on every floor. Just have to go through the metal detection machine. They don't ask why you're there. Too bad Walmart is not there anymore. I'm sure they had bathrooms.

    Politics aside, Doner shack is terrible. The place is so dirty and one time my wife found a whole dead roach on her food. Like straight up a whole dead roach. All your other recs are spot on!

      @FoodFiend  10 месяцев назад +2

      It happens. It is an open kitchen and doesn't appear dirty. I've had hair in my food and my friend even had maggots in his prime rib at Ray's. Mistakes are made. But I respect your opinion. 🤙

      Made by Filipino's now at Vicki's restaurant near the McDonald's. The piroscki's are smaller now than what it used to be. Rada's used to be located near the Fort Street Cafe. Don't know if the original owner went back to her home country. I recall her saying she was from Ukraine. Her fried squid is good too.

    Never occurred to me to question why it's called Fort St. Always like when you share historical facts 👍. But i wonder what fur the Russian fur traders were looking for? We only get rat, bat, and mongoose if you can catch em...."Ooo gurl, whatchu wearing?" "Dis one mongoose stole wit matching rat lined boots and bat hat." 🤔😅. The area is definitely a hub for food, everything looked ono!

    • @FoodFiend
      @FoodFiend  10 месяцев назад +2

      🤣🤣🤣 yeah I don't know what they were catching. Unless they were just trading fur already caught somewhere else. Makes me sing "Apple bottom jeans. Mongoose boots with da fur...🎶🎵" mongoose is my spirit animal. Small but angry. Or a sloth...if I had my way I'd eat and sleep all day.

    Chinese Dates can be found in most Oriental Markets and some Crack Seed Store.., definitely at Longs Drugs in the Oriental Food aisle.. if you can remember those little chocolate footballs given out during Halloween and can be had for Longs Drugs also or other department stores Walmart, Target, etc.... their foil covered and reminiscent of tiny Foot Ball shape.., Chinese Date are comparable in size , bright Red in color and about 6-8 in a package innocuous in looks or smell.... However it adds a.... distinct flavor and taste that cause one to think "what is that"...? Don't forget the Parsley..., google the Dinners Drive-Ins - and Dives version and watch the local chef work his magic... Then holo-holo on down to Peral City Bowl for a taste...! You'll never be the same, pricey now I bet, but larger Ox Tail and Broke Da Mouth at least for me..... OH by the way there are certain secrets technics some cooks perform before throwing them all together... Guarrens ball bearings going change your mind proper authentic Chinese style OX Tail Soup.... take a friend

      It used to be. Now it is surprisingly not bad and cleaner than it used to be and has security guards everywhere. The homeless people are more Ewa of Bethel Street...Fort Street Mall is very long and extends all the way to Ala Moana Blvd...so you're just talking about the part between Beretania and Hotel Street. 🤷‍♀
