    I'm currently reading the book and I have exactly the same feelings about it as you do. It is the first time when the main characters annoy me a lot (mostly Albus and Harry). However, I really like Scorpius and Draco. In my opinion there is no magic atmosphere in this book like in the previous ones. I don't feel like I'm reading a Harry Potter book. For me the real Harry Potter ended with the words "All was well".
    P.S. I kind of ship Albus and Scorpius 😂

      Right? Everytime the two had a scene I was like "and now kiss!"
      I honestly expected them to be gay, maybe that is why the whole script reminded me of the Simon Snow fanfic in fangirl...

    lol there is one thing everybody agrees on with the cursed child and that's that Scorpious was gold like how can you hate or not like him. I personally really loved this book but I agree that the book has some problems. I don't really count it as a part of the original series but it's still hp for me

    This review has earned you a subscriber! Thank you for your honesty. I was beginning to wonder if I was one of the few Harry Potter fans who absolutely despised this script. I agree with everything you said and I really hated what they did with some of our beloved characters. As much as I love Harry Potter, I'm not going to be one of those fans who is so blinded by my love and obsession for this series that I am not able to see the MAJOR flaws in this entire script. The plot was very unrealistic and so overused and there were too many things that made no sense. None of the characters were anything like how they had been portrayed in the first 7 books (it has nothing to do with them being stressed adults). The ONLY things I appreciated about this story is the different side to Malfoy, and his son. Great review and I am simply going to pretend that this book doesn't exist (which really hurts me to say).

    I think the main problem is, is that people are judging a script as if it is a book! of course we aren't going to get the same feels as a full fledged novel, but JK Rowling wanted all to be able to have in sight to this story, incase you can't make it to a play. and personally I don't think you cant judge a character based on a script, the lines are half of what's going on. also to judge the characters we fell in love with against the Harry Potter series to be isn't fair... they are adults now with children we should expect them to no be that same characters we parted with after Deathly Hallows.

      I have to disagree, there are other plays that are often read instead of seen performed (Shakespeare, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest & 12 Angry Men Come to Mind) and you can still get a sense of the characters through reading it. The plot itself also is influenced by what the actors bring to the table, but it's the same regardless of if it's read or seen.

      Your points are valid, it is a script and some people treat it like a book. HOWEVER, I think that plot and writing determine whether a movie, book, play, or anything that involves writing, is good. HP&CC is a script, yes, but the dialog and writing was awful, and the plot had holes in it that I can't see being dismissed just because it's a script. There are many script reads (Shakespeare, did I spell that right? XD), where the plot and writing is creative and really well done, so you feel like you're part of the story, even though you're not seeing it on a stage. Also, in the book (I won't include spoilers incase you haven't read it...), Albus says the line "I wish you weren't my father" and Harry replies with "Sometimes I wish you weren't my son" and that bothers me. They are adults now so they're out of character, but I think HARRy, of all people, would try his hardest to be kind to his children (After the dursleys...), and even if he did feel that way, he wouldn't say it out loud.

    • @SHINeeMacknae
      @SHINeeMacknae 8 лет назад +1

      I haven't read it but wouldn't that taking it out of context, because if you really thought it through...I would understand where they're coming from saying those words to each other...If I was Harry Potter, I'd wish that my kids didn't have the famous Harry Potter for a father either, same as if you were the son or daughter of the famous Harry Potter and people had a lot of expectations for you, I'd want to say "I wish you weren't my father" too. Just my view...I feel kind of bad that people aren't having good reviews, I wasn't expecting it to be written like a book either, they said it would be the script...surely it can't be that bad, since it is a play and they worked hard on it, they wouldn't write like shit; they're professionals. I'll keep my hope up for my copy, I really hope I don't get it and I start to read it and have all these negative comments destroy it...It's really your opinion, honestly but I do feel like they wouldn't write a shit script and then publish it.
      Are we reading them "He said this" and then have an action of the stage actor moving or something... Is it the type of script actors would recieve with their names and stuff... I don't know...I do think that Harry shouldn't be as distant to his children as he appeared to be in the photos on Pottermore...

  • @Scorpiolo
    @Scorpiolo 8 лет назад +1

    No one seems to be remembering that this was not made to be released as a book, it was made to be performed as a play so much of its charm comes from its stage fx. This book was simply released as a consolation to those who couldn't get down to London for the play.

  • @musiclistner94
    @musiclistner94 8 лет назад +4

    I think since it's a play, no one really can go in it thinking that this is the "new Harry Potter book". And it's a script, so it's kinda like the movies, you only get sort of glimpse of the greatness, when in the books you get the deeper meaning behind things. If it had been a book I think it would have been very different, but since it's build for the stage it is kinda weird reading it like a book. don't know if this make any sense. Would have loved to read more of Scorpius and Albus in school though, being the outcast and all that.

      THANK YOU! I don't understand all the negativity for Cursed Child when it really was a good play about events that happened after the original series. Everyone seems to be judging it the same way they would judge a novel. :/

    I loved this play, but I can totally understand why it wasn't for everyone. I think one thing most positive and negative reviewers can agree on, is that it will probably be phenomenal on stage. I really hope I get to see it sometime as I'm desperate to see how it all comes together on stage. Great review :)

    The mark of a well-written play is when it doesn't need an actor to bring the character to life. So, if you didn't think the characters weren't developed enough and would be better when it is acted out, maybe the writing just isn't good. Maybe the play is lacking, while relying too heavily on someone else to bring the characters to life. The writing should bring a character to life, even in a play, it shouldn't all be left to the actors.

    To be honest I don't think they should have even released it as a book, they should have just made sure to make the play accessible, take it on tour, have shows across the globe, film the play! Most people find reading play difficult, I'm a drama student and I read plays all the time and I struggle. There's no way you can get the same Harry Potter vibe reading a play that watching the magic on stage

    I just have to totally agree. I hoped for something different. Till the last moment I hoped that the spoilers were fake due to all the #keepthesecrets situation. I knew it was meant to be different, but not like that. It really felt like a fan fiction and not because of the lack of description but because of the characters attitude, their motivation and poor interaction. There were just a couple of great things:
    - The space given to Malfoy family (I loved Draco & Scorpius)
    - Snape moments (even though he seemed out of character sometimes)
    - Hagrid moment
    - The possibility to fill the gaps left between the lines thanks to our imagination

  • @olivia1910
    @olivia1910 8 лет назад

    I just finished it and I kind of enjoyed it ! I agree on the points you made about the writing style, of course it doesn't even come close to a HP book. But I think all these issues about the writing were indeed due to the play script format, it really doesn't allow description and info dumps. And yes it was corny at times. But as for the characters, I thought some of it made sense. Maybe Harry wasn't exactly like Harry, but he's like 40 years old here, he's probably changed, and he's struggling with a rebellious kid. I think all parents make wrong decisions when they try to protect their kids. And as he said in the book, he didn't have a father (or a mother), so he really has to learn it all by himself. I enjoyed the plot even if it was a bit predictable, but I would've liked to know more about the different "realities", if you know what I mean. But again, you can't really give a ton of information in a play script. Also I thought it was kind of random that it all started because of Cedric.
    I think I enjoyed because I watched your review first and therefore I went into it without seeing it as "the official 8th book of the series" ! I think it's the only way you can enjoy it because let's be honest, the ending was perfect.
    Few, sorry, had to talk about it xD

    Finally someone who doesn't worship this book! I thought I was the only one.
    I agree with absolutely everything you said. The characters were pretty flat and they didn't act like the characters in the original series. The story was flawed and clichéd and everything was messed up! Over all it just didn't feel like Harry Potter. If there was a way to unread this book/script, I would do it!

  • @Taelove122

    Wonderful review~! To be honest when I first saw people starting to post reviews I thought that just because it's Harry Potter most people would not be completely honest about what they thought about it. I had high expectations for this book and have been waiting to read it since it was first announced. My feelings and opinions are much the same as yours especially in regards to the characters. I feel like this is one of those stories where it's best in it's original format which is on stage. Even though it is a play, it just doesn't translate well on paper. If it was translated into an actual novel then yes it would be just as good as seeing the play, but with just the script book it's a big let down. For me the only redeeming quality is Scorpius. He's so adorable and I'm so happy we now have some one in Slytherin who's not evil and out to destroy the world/murder all muggles.

  • @amity1553

    I personally agree with many of your points, especially about the predictable plot. However, I did like the portrayal of Harry in it. I think showing that parenthood changed Harry, and that he actually does have some flaws as a character really made me see him as more than a one-dimensional character in the book. I also think that the the writers were trying to give some fan service and that is why it comes of as a bit of a fanfiction (especially at the bit where it reveals Delphi's parenthood). But overall, I liked it, possibly because I was so in love with the world before, but I bet it is amazing on stage.

    I really do agree on Ron. His character is way more than the "funny guy", he is kindhearted (something which is seen but I felt it wasn't shown in the right way) and brave. Something that many ppl have said is that Harry didn't fit into his character, personally I think he actually did, whilst some actions were a little bit over the top I wasn't surprised at all by how he evolved as an adult. I also liked how Hermione was really shown as a strong woman.
    There are definitely some bits I didn't like about this, but some that I really did enjoy and that I really wish to see in real.
    Tbh I wasn't really looking forward to reading the actual story and the adventure, I just wanted a glimpse of the magical wizarding world of Hp, and that is what I got :)

    I really enjoyed reading this, but there are so many flaws. I really like wat they did with loads of the characters, but when reading it I just glossed over the plotholes, hoping that it will be glossed over in the play.
    Loads of people complain that the characters where OOC, and I agree, but I also think that the characters have grown up. Harry, Hermione, Draco and Ron aren't the same as when they were 18, so I think that people need to accept that they're not going to be the same.
    I still think though, that if you're going to change the original characters completely they should explain why.
    Like, Harry wouldn't be that mean to his son, it didn't make sense, I would accept it if they gave the reason... but...
    I mean, I still loved it though.

    I enjoyed reading it, it was hard to put down. But the plot, the dialogue, everything... it just felt very off. I'm kind of baffled JK okayed this plot, and if this truly is canon, I hope Fantastic Beasts can undo what people find to be its mistakes. This probably is better left as a play, its nice to get the script and all, but maybe it should have been released in book form after the play found more success worldwide, the timing could be the issue. Different things work better on different mediums.

    New Subscriber! This was a very critical review of the Cursed Child, which was very similar to my own opinion. But I subscribed because the way you explain it, your personality, and everything else. Can't wait to watch more from your channel. 💛
    Edit: Scorpius was my only favorite character. Draco had some good development and seemed like himself. EVERYONE ELSE WAS OUT OF CHARACTER. Even McGonnagal and some other established characters (I won't say who) that reappeared. That was what probably disappointed me the most.
    Oh and the obvious elephant in the room that made the whole book very underwhelming since it was all going to be changed anyway.
    I would love to see the play since I've heard it is very good. But yeah, this playbook wasn't very fun to read for the most part.

    So many characters were out of character. I hated it when the movies turned Ron into just comic relief, when he's actually so much more than that. But in this play it's not just Ron, but there were so many characters who acted nothing like they would in the books. I agree with what lots of people are saying, it comes across as a very mediocre fanfiction by a writer who has a slight idea of what the characters are like.

    "You need an actor to bring him to life" she says then says how an actual performance would make it better. It was a play before it was a book.

    Personally I loved the script. It was such a throwback to my childhood. I just can't say a bad thing about it. I just think it's a great story about fathers and their sons. I also love how we got to see Draco now that he's not being influenced by his father (and the terrible thing him and Scorpius had to go through)

    The number one thing wrong with it was the 'villain' of the play just wouldn't have existed. It's explained away in an instant if you're a Harry Potter fan. So disappointing

  • @Tinahgirl83
    @Tinahgirl83 8 лет назад

    I enjoyed it for the most part. I think it had several flaws and that it needed to be a novel instead of a play so that things could be explained instead of thrown at us. The bare bones of the story are good, but it needs a lot of development. Also Ron needs more love.

    Thank you for the review and your honesty. I wasn't going to read it anyway, but now I'm certain. I was so glad to see J.K.Rowling develop her capacity and writing style in non-Harry-Potter books, so I don't want to associate her name with this fan fiction,in which I feel she didn't even participate that much

    My personal opinion, while I didn't love the book, I did like it. And I just wanted to throw a few counterarguments against yours. Feel free to counter argue against my counterarguments... Wow that was redundant.. Haha. Firstly, I think Harry's character was represented correctly in this play. Harry, while brave and caring, is no stranger to outbursts that hurt people. While what he said is a bit far fetched, I think it's still plausible being how over emotional Harry can be, which I also can see in Albus Severus. While I personally hated Albus Severus, his character is just like Harry. Very socially awkward, random outbursts of anger, and I feel like he is the main child of Harry and Ginny that actually fits Harry. With Hermione, I agree that her character was a bit... Off. Though, while Hermione is very organized, and plans everything out, there are times that she does things without thinking and it bites here (ex, calling the Werewolf in PoA). Tho I agree about Ron. Haha. He was off

    i really hated this book so much... the trolley witch scene just shows everything that's wrong with it tbh. it makes no sense and really the plot is a bit awful. i thought albus was really irritating and scorpius was the only good thing about reading it. i didn't even want to finish it.

    I agree with everything you said!! the characterisations were so bad and when i read this i had tears streaming down my face i was laughing so hard at how ridiculous the plot was. having said that i did get to see the show and it was honestly one of the most amazing experiences of my life. the plot was still awful but the staging, music and special effects were so amazing that it didnt even matter!!

    I really liked this one. My imagenation works wonders though. And since I had already read plays before, I knew what to expect. I missed descriptions in a couple of places though and there is a huge plothole in the story (to keep it as spoilerfree a possible: it has to do with wands)

    I agree with pretty much all of this! I was so disappointed with how they portrayed the characters. I hated what they did with Ron's character. Scorpius was amazing though, and the only smart character in the whole play. I think on stage this would be great, as a book... no

    Omg best review. I agree with you 100%. You says everything that I thought. Also did everyone else hate what they did to the trolley witch? I thought that was ridiculous. Not in keeping with Harry Potter at all. It was more like from a supernatural tv series (and I love those but I didn't want that done in Harry Potter)

    why the disepointment it wasn't realistic. yhe just like harry killing a basilisk in his 2nd year. it's just a small story. it's like fanficition but then with a nice cover and a lot of fans coming together to talk about it. I loved it because I expected bad writing because it's a play I expected a mhe story because it's a sub story and it wasn't written by Rowling. but because of this I enjoyed to have a new story and some new characters in my harry potter mind. keep up the good work I love your videos and hello from the Netherlands :)

    I loved the book, I loved the feeling of coming home and I loved certain lines which are very quotable. But besides that I cant see the book as the ultimative future, because I have different opinions on character developments (e.g. I ship scorpius with Lily Luna). I see the book as a Fanfiction and JKR just helped out with details anyways. Besides she said a movie wouldn't suit the storyline at all and therefore they wont do a movie out of it and I definitely agree with her. But I would loooove to see the movie in my country (Germany), because I'm not able go to London to see it.
