Utah Transit bought up to 30 Comet l low platform slider cars for Frontrunner commuter service in the 2000s. Couple years ago 25 cars were auctioned off. 13 ready to run, 4 needing major work, 8 fit only to be scrapped on site. The 13 in good condition were bought by an excursion line in Abilene, Kansas and moved there. Amtrak got its first material handling cars in 1986 and another batch in 1990. The so called boxcars you showed were actually mail and express cars with HEP pass through. Later Amtrak freight type cars were several hundred box cars, over 100 refrigerator cars and several hundred RoadRailers. Amtrak ended all express service 2003-05 including even mail carrying.
Now that’s a history lesson right there! I hope these two comets get saved from further destruction one day by C&O, but the Amtrak Mail cars I’ve never even seen or heard of before seeing them and researching them, was so cool to see them
Its so sad to see these beautiful cars in this condition! I remember not only riding in them when i was kid, but seeing nothing but Geeps and F40s pulling 1's and 2's through places like Ridgewood and Glen Rock. I hope they save these cars soon
@@JerseyRailProductions It hit a downed tree on the M&E. Yea, my heart sank when i saw what had happned, but it can be repaired, question is, will NJ Transit repair it. And we still have 4119.
@@FreedomtowerStudios yes i heard, hopefully they actually take the f40 scrap sitting in MMC and use it to repair the twin and keep her alive, a shame to go down cus of a dent on the nose
The Comet 1s are the low door only version. They were retired from NJT by 2005. I'm not sure which lines as I think every line had at least 1 station a high level platform by then. They've been abandoned for 20 years now. The high door version remained in NJT service until 2009.
They ran quite late on the Pascack Valley line for sure. It had no high level platforms until Secaucus Junction opened - only some handicap boarding platforms - which were served by the modified Comet 1 cab cars that had been modified with high level doors. Pretty common on Main/Bergen county too - the stations with high level platforms were mid 2000s or later rebuilds (like Ridgewood) or new (like Ramsey Rt 17)
they also run on the RVL stations that are High Level were Newark Penn Union Roselle Park Cranford Plainfield Somerville stations like High Bridge Annandale North Branch Bridgewater were low platforms
Nope those cars are scrap. The whippany railway museum took a bunch of spare parts to keep their feet running and all the copper was stolen so they are basically shells
@@seantoris1763 they shouldve forseen the vandalism before storing them there so they maybe couldve had a chance but i didnt know whippany took parts so i guess they really are destined for scrap now 😞
Why do they do this to trains & treat them like this ? That's messed up look at how the vandals have gotten to them with the Ugly graffiti. This is horrible! My Uncle Al was an engineer for Erie-Lackawanna. I remember he was furious when ConRail was proposing the merger back in the '70s
Everyone seems to be against the con rail era 😭 😆

pretty cool stuff, i bet it was peaceful being out there with those abandoned railcars
It was definitely peaceful but a historical sight to see
Nothing beats the comet's and the blue birds. They were good looking and sounding trains!
Thats for sure!!!!
What a shame to see them like that. NJT should donate them to one of many grateful museums out there.
Indeed they should, i know whippany musuem would love restoring them to EL or DOT schemes
Whippany Railway Museum and Southern California Railway Museum already have some.
@@davidng2336 these should be restored as well! Bringem back to former glory for excursions

I'm sure C&D has something planned for them. Maybe for Operation Toy Train or an excursion service
I sure hope so, that would actually be a Great idea for them and I would love to see that excursion roll around here, would be sick to see
