Magnificent. No other composer gets to my soul as Sibelius does, for me the greatest of all time. When I hear his finest works I’m living in another world.

The use of the percussion section is exquisite in this work, as are the woodwinds - what the heck, Sibelius surely knew how to use the whole orchestra in a magnificent, colorful manner. Maybe his palette was darker than that of many other composers, but I don't see it as a weakness at all - on the contrary, it brings the music to life in a highly personal and fascinating way.

It’s almost impossible to have a favourite composer, except when I hear a work such as this and then I know for sure - Jan Sibelius!

Thank you so much! One of my favorite composers is Jean Sibelius.

Love this! It is so well recorded. None of the sections of the orchestra seem lost in the mix, the layers of texture are clearly defined. The pacing is wel judged and not laboured. The sunrise is just gorgeous. Well done to everyone. A production I will listen to again and again. Thank you

I love these triple time dances that Sibelius throws in from time to time, as in the 5th Symphony, the 7th Symphony and this work.

OK, but what this have to do with this performance? It's unfair to the great conductor Paavo Järvi to just mention his father. :(

The connection between the Järvi Dynasty and Sibelius is really strong.

Sibelius straordinario e intenso evocatore di lidi inesplorati e di struggenti lirici sentimenti.

This is the most exciting, thus the most effective and satisfying, performance of this work I've heard yet (and if I'm not mistaken, the fastest)! Its all-important momentum, expressiveness, dynamics, accents and clarity are all here in good measure. It seems to be a very difficult work to conduct or interpret; the recordings I've heard are so different one from the other that it has been hard for me to get to know properly. Now, finally, I think I have. Thank you, Maestro Jarvi, and the FRSO, for bringing it to life for me.

This is a magnificent performance from all concerned from probably the finest Sibelius conductor we have today.

I'm in love with this tone poem but this performance shows lack of consiousness to me, the first movement with that tricky galop was rather unconvincing.

I always find the opening strange and unconvincing, however overall I think that as usual Paavo Jarvi demonstrates his expertise with Sibelius- excellent performance from orchestra and conductor.

The first part has to be relatively faceless and everyday in order to highlight further the uncanny occurrences that follow.

@@oscaraitorp3922 Yes. From 1974. Jochum's from the 1950s was the first I heard (on a DGG Ten Inch vinyl!) and his opening was magical.

Nice performance but that timpanist is shockingly out of tune (sharp) on many of his high notes.

  • @TomboVersta

The key is on the details, small branches and different type of leaves from the great tree. And this performance, in my opinion, is too far from the sonorities that can be reached within Sibelius Universe.
