  • After two weeks of encasement, it's time for the larvae, now adult hornets, to leave their silk cocoons. Get an intimate look at the moment one hatches and begins to experience life in its shiny new form.

To all the people saying how "evil" hornets are, it's their role in the food chain. Without predators, there would be no balance. That's why there are so many humans, we have no predators. God made hornets to control other insect population. Their not evil, they just are meat eaters needing to survive. They're just insects anyways, they don't think about what they're about to do, they just need to survive.

This species is Vespa mandarinia. The photography is excellent, but there are a few problems with the commentary:
    1) Adult insects EMERGE from their cocoons; HATCHING is what the larvae do to escape from eggs.
    2) The hornet emerging from the cocoon is a "he" rather than a "she"--the very long antennae make it apparent that this is a male (which does no work other than mate with new queens, and has no sting). However, the insect shown at 1:17 is actually a female, probably a new queen, and this is evident from the pointed terminal segment of the abdomen (males have a blunt terminal segment). The camera switches to the male again at 1:23. Another, more mature, female is seen at 1:53.
    3) Hornets DON"T gather pollen (mentioned at 1:40) to feed their brood--they capture other insects (and occasionally small vertebrates, such as lizards) to feed their brood. They occasionally take nectar from flowers and this may result in pollination, but to the hornet the pollen is simply useless dust to be brushed off.
