I 100% agree with all of this I’m a sofa needle felter and I hate it at times but using a tray and using a v pillow to support my back, thanks and take care! X
Thank you for this Philippa. I was doing a lot of felting before Christmas and started having a lot of pain in my left shoulder which surprised me as I'm right handed. I ended up going to a chiropractor which has helped, and I have also been trying to relax it when I felt instead of holding it tense. I also usually sit on the sofa to felt so may have to try doing it at a desk instead. Thanks for all your videos they're really helpful. I loved the highland cow that was behind you in this one
Hi Nicola, yes, my pain was in the left shoulder first, I'm the same. I thought it would have started in my hand I hold the needle but the tension seems to occur in holding the felt and the constant moving and twisting. The funny exercises have really helped so maybe find a physio RUclips channel for extra tips. That Highland Cow will eventually be a PDF or video, I was so pleased with him I had to keep him! Thanks for watching x
I have a great tip to relax your jaw, it’s very simple just when you notice you are clenching your teeth just put your tongue between your teeth, just slide in and it will relax the entire jaw. You can do all sorts of other things to help like having a chewing gum or a sweet. I learned these tricks from my GP and they work wonders for me. Not sure how to stop clenching all together though that would be the real aim 🤣 Thank you so much for your insightful videos! I’m a beginner at needle felting and I can confidently say 80% of my knowledge so far is from your channel.
That's a great tip, I've just been practicing it, thank you, it works straight away! My videos are what I was looking for when I started so that's great that you have found them so useful, thank you for such a lovely comment 😀 x
Thank you so much for this video! I found it on a facebook group when searching for ideas to make felting less stressful on my shoulder. My physical therapist suggested a drafting table and your idea of a laptop stand is very similar - and I have one of those already to try out. Lots of other great advice for all the other aches and pains that come with needle felting alot too. Thank you! :)
I am so happy I found your channel! i just started getting back into needle felting after losing all my tools and wool a year ago and your channel is so helpful and inspiring. thank you -L
Great advice!! I use the wrist guards when my carpal tunnel flares up. I really work on my posture. My 13 yr old dog helps me get up every 20 mins!! LOL
Thank you so much! Your tips are invaluable. I had noticed your mouth thing on a video in the past but didn't think anything of it because I do the same thing when I am concentrating or preoccupied. My neighbors probably think I am barmy...They can see there is no one there I am talking to!
Hi Philippa, I absolutely love your channel, the way you share everything warts and all. It's so refreshing and presented in a down to earth friendly way. I've yet to see one of your videos that I didn't learn something from 😊 I like great you tell it as it is in an honest and open manner. This particular video answers the question about the pain I'm experiencing in my shoulder, I suspected it was the felting but didn't want to admit it! Thank you so much for sharing what has worked for you, I'll have a go at raising my work and see if that helps. I want to wish you every success. Please keep up the good work, your videos are really useful and I revisit them often. I loved the highland bull one, I had a go at one myself, which I have away as a Christmas gift. My nephews wife was so delighted with it that she gave me my very first commission for another larger one 😃 I have to day adding the ring through his nose was a challenge! Best wishes x
Hi Julie, Wow, thank you so much for such a great message. I do think honesty is the best option and I try not to waffle. I couldn't believe how much my shoulder hurt from sitting and felting. The exercises really are helping the most, maybe a physio channel might have some good videos on advice. Good luck with the shoulder and thank you for supporting my channel and watching my videos, it makes it all worthwhile! Take care, Philippa x
I have a chair that is suppose to have good ergonomics but my back gets sore a lot. I game and craft in that chair so I use it frequently. (Especially in the weeks and months before Christmas) I definitely hunch over but part of the issue is it doesn’t suit my body properly. I folded up a blanket an put that on the seat and it has helped ALOT. Temporary solution but works for now until I can get a better chair. That chair massager would be so nice!! Going to have to look into those!
Hey!! You might remember me from a few weeks back, I commented that I really wanted to get into this craft and I had a few questions about it. Well lucky enough for me my birthday was around the corner and I asked for a kit that I found off Amazon, when it arrived I was ecstatic. I got it on February 11th and I’ve made so many cute things already. I made hearts for my family for Valentine’s Day, I made a little chicken ball thingy and many more things!!! Anyway I just wanted to say how much I love your channel and how much you’ve helped me!! Thanks so much❤️❤️ one more thing, when/if you sell your creations, how do you price them. I’ve been meaning to make an Etsy account for my paintings and now for my felt creations but I’ve got no clue where to begin!!! Anyway yeah thanks so much for all the help!!! -Amy
Hi Amy, I'm so pleased you are enjoying needle felting and my channel, thank you for your kind words! If you look under my business playlist I have a video on how to price your items and another on Etsy, hopefully they help, take care and thanks for watching, Philippa x
I would also suggest, like any athletic pursuit, start off slowly and increase gradually. As you gain strength in your hands and arms you can do more. Progressive load, i.e. do only as much as you can handle and increase gradually. And congrats on your marathon! Well done!
Thank you so much for this! I definitely need a lamp or something similar - it’a still dark in the afternoon which makes needle felting harder after my work shift.. I usually stab myself with the needles when I work on the edges or pinch smaller amounts of wool - I just accepted it as a learning process 🤣
Honestly a good light makes all the difference, this one I have does work well but doesn't look great, a good daylight one might work well, thanks for watching x
Great tips! I love the Highland Cow fauxdermy! Will you be making a process video? Also, it's lovely to see all of your pieces on the new shelving unit 😍
Yah! You are the first person to notice! Thank you. The Highland Cow came out really well and I think he will be a PDF, I liked him so much that I've kept him! Thanks so much for watching and commenting 🙂 x
I see a physical therapist every 4-5 weeks (here in the US) it costs me $133 per visit. She called it “craft neck” and gave me a tube to roll out my spine on. 😉 Thanks for the tips! 💜
With gripping objects to reverse overuse of those muscles, lay forearm flat pull hand back to 90 degrees for a minute. It relaxes muscles used to grip. Relax hand and repeat until your muscles stop hurting. To reverse hunching over, stand up and pull arms behind as you pull shoulders back.
I buy regular white carded and use as core, it's from World of wool, I just find it felts so fast. World of wool do have a very cheap core wool too but I haven't tried that yet. I like the carded batts in Jacob or Shetland, hope that helps x
I never move my wrst when felting. I use my elbow as the fulcrum so only my elbow moves when Ifelt. My shoulder is also still. I have had no hand pain.
I should imagine it's a Bulgarian sheep breed, Etsy has some sellers but I've never used it so can't comment on quality, try and get a sample first before spending too much money x
Your exercises look like yoga moves. Ask your doctor about doing some yoga videos or classes when it's safe. I have been going since last summer and haven't caught covid. Only 9 students are allowed in the class. I don't touch anything but my own mat. Yoga helped my through both shoulder and hip bursitis and has strengthened my knees and hands, Not to mention a lot of other parts of my body.
Thank you for the tips. Have a good day and stay safe.💜
Thanks so much Cindy, you too x
I 100% agree with all of this I’m a sofa needle felter and I hate it at times but using a tray and using a v pillow to support my back, thanks and take care! X
Lots of people sofa felt fine, wish I could but I find it so uncomfortable 😕, thanks for watching 👀 x

Yay! I'll look out for the PDF 🙂 I finished Angus yesterday and I'm going to make him a baby next (I found your mini's video) I'll have a herd soon! 🐮
Thank you for your lovely feedback on my shop, just so kind of you and yes, I have quite a few herds! X

Yes, I was recommended a tube, craft neck, that is a perfect name for it! X
@@feltsbyphilippa yes, I got a kick out of it. 😀

Physios are the best 😀
I definitely agree now! X
Hi can needlefelting cause shaky hands
Yes because you will have stressed your hand muscles and tired muscles might shake, build up your felting time slowly and take days off too x
