"While the rest of them dudes was makin their bread, brother beg your pardon I was losin mine." Corky Laing - Drums, Felix Pappalardi - Bass, Leslie West - Guitar & Vocals, Steve Knight - Keyboards.
Leslie West, The Great Fatsby .... an incredible guitarist, vocalist and songwriter.
Leslie West is the King of Tone due to that awesome guitar sound he developed. He is not a one hit wonder and many guitarist note him as an influence. But yet the Rock Hall of Fame continues their snub. RIP Leslie and Felix. Go Corky!
This hard rock band has been around since the late 60's-70's. They performed at "Woodstock". "Mississippi Queen" is their most famous song using extensive cowbell sounds. Some other songs were "Long Red", "Never In My Life", "To My Friend", "Crossroader", "Nantucket Sleighride" etc.
For early Leslie go find some vagrants music. First band Leslie was in from 64-66. Great stuff!
First off, Britt... I love you and your channel: instant subscriber! Also, I am a recent devotee to Mountain and Leslie West - he won me over immediately as I see he has won you over as well... When you said, "He's feeling it! He's feeling it!" at about 2:40 in this video, that's the same feeling I got when I first saw this video... Does he shred his guitar or what!?!?!?! He's digging so hard for those notes I'm scared he's going to crack his teeth!... and this is to say nothing of his presence... LARGER THAN LIFE! You think when he walked into a room heads turned??? I strongly encourage you to check out the Woodstock footage of Mountain's performance of Beside The Sea; you'll love it GUARANTEED! ... and never a more humble guy than Leslie West. Check out some of his interviews and you'll love him even more. Wish he was still playing - RIP and taken from us too soon!
One of the best rocker anthems of ALL TIME! RIP Leslie West (guitar and vocals).
Shame they aren't in the RNR Hall of Fame
And Felix Pappallardi. Jim
Amen
In my opinion Leslie west is the most underrated major guitarist ever...i am 65 and listened to him since 1971,a giant in more than size.
RIP Leslie West
A mountain of a man.
And Felix..........died way too young - 45 yo.
The legendary Leslie West on guitar and lead vocals here. RIP.....
This album, Climbing, is just a true forgotten classic. Such goodness! Three kickass rockers in Mississippi Queen, Sittin’ On A Rainbow, and Never In My Life, plus the epic, Theme For An Imaginary Western. Add in For Yasgur’s Farm (an ode to Woodstock), Silver Paper, To My Friend, The Laird and Boys In The Band …man, good stuff!
That was Leslie West singing and playing guitar. I still remember when that song came out in 1970 and got a lot of play on FM radio stations. Sadly Leslie passed away in 2020 just before Christmas, he was 75.
I’m 44, and a former Mississipian. When I was 3 or 4 years old I was playing this on the stereo at home. I still play it on a jukebox when I see one. Thanks for the great video!!
Cowbell. You lift a kettle bell, you smash a cowbell.
Rock In Peace Leslie and Felix
Awesome that you’re so into this music. I grew up with this in South Africa
Everything about Leslie West was big gigantic and grand his vioce his guitar and Leslie himself
I don't think that band ever used a fog machine. Everybody there was high as hell. 😂
Another wonderful reaction, Britt. You bring so much sprit to your role. Great, great to have you among the many reactors on RUclips.
♥️👍✌️
Can remember as a kid.. my Dad taking me to a store to buy this cassette!! Cassette w mountain.. circa 1971 or 1972.
The Great Fatsby. They still gimme the chills! All these years later.
Try the album version. Your observation about Leslie’s voice is spot on, and the studio recording captures all the energy of both his vocal performance and Les Paul through a Marshall sound. Would love to see you react to the album cuts of Nantucket Sleigh Ride, and Theme From An Imaginary Western. Two high points in the Mountain catalog.
it was sunn tho
@@theoneandonlyfalafel Was it recorded through a Sunn? I’ve seen him live numerous times back in the day and it was Marshall all day long. Seems like every band I played in, in the early and mid seventies had a bassist and a few guitarists using those Fender line cabs and amps. They actually sounded quite nice. As a drummer, I blew my ears out with EV 18’s and horn cabs used as monitors on each side of me. (There’s a photo of Ted Nugents’ drummer on stage with the same setup.) I have no idea what we were thinking back then, but it had little to do with our health. 👈😉 Good stuff, thanks for the correction. Regards
he enjoyed the sound of the sunn on that specific track. he def was a marshall purist though.@@ronaldelliott4373
@@ronaldelliott4373 - Yeah, the studio version is a Sunn with KT88's. That's what showed up there...
@@Xx-xd3zo Yep, Sunn equipment. Now that brings back some memories of some good times. Not surprised. 🤔🍻
Haha...you are freaking adorable...I saw Leslie West with Jack Bruce (world's greatest bassist) at the Palladium back in about 1971 0r so...just great, so so good.
Mountain had a huge hit with Theme For An Imaginary Western, a song written by Jack Bruce. Jack of course was the bassist joining Eric Clapton lead guitar, and Ginger Baker drums in the legendary trio Cream. All this great music before you were a twinkling in dads eyes.
I didn't get to catch the original lineup back in the day, but I did get to see Corky Laing (the drummer) and Leslie West (guitarist) at the Bull Run in Central Massachusetts back late 90's early 2000's time period. Pretty darn good show and Leslie's tone was still on point. The song Nantucket Sleighride (actually the whole album) is worthy of reacting to for sure.
Chris Stapleton needs to cover this
I owned this album in 1971 and it almost got me killed. I was 19 yo and was in my last year of prep school. I was living in a dorm and the football coach and family lived above us. I came home after school and forgot he lived there and put on Mississippi Queen on volume 10. About 2 minutes later, he burst into my room screaming to turn it off that it woke up his baby. From the look on his face and in his eyes, I thought I was dead. Luckily, he just turned around and walked out as I turned off the record player. I have loved this song all my life.
Thanks britt for the funny reaction of mountain Mississippi queen and his ginormous afro.lol they are awsome.god bless.peace
One of my favorite reactors. Our party is still going. Rockin 50 year Olds. Hello
These people were not about clothes or glamour they were about the music
Raunchy sound that burns into your brain and gets stuck there for life, and you'll love how it jus' stank in your brain case forever.
The song is a classic and you're beautiful.
Used to love playing this one. As a drummer I love starting out with a cowbell. :) It just sets the tone.
Awesome I need more right now
smile on my face.
One of my favorites!!! He put some STANK ON IT!!! I grew up, listening to this..... Black girl HERE, who was adopted by hippies in the 70s, I'm glad you're hearing this.
If your liking this, teddy swims is another big dude with an amazing voice. His rendition of "I can't make you love me" gets every reactor shook!
what a voice...three members don't need anything else...congratulations....
Check out their “Nantucket Sleighride” from the album of the same name…awesome
They even sound like a mountain. For teenage boys learning to play guitar in the late 70s and early 80s, this was one of the songs we'd try to learn.
I Jam that Leslie West really kicks it on is "Whole lotta Shakin goin on " and also " Satisfaction off the Avalanche album that whole album cranks it big time,I delivered catalog cards to JCPenney in Vicksburg Mississippi from Memphis, Tennessee with this song on my mind hoping to pick up and deliver to my own Mississippi Queen, Oh by the way are you from Mississippi 😘😊
my first concert was Mountain in 1974 at George Mason University. was a fantastic show.
Leslie West and Mountain are dope, this is just the tip of the iceberg, try Nantucket Sleighride sometime, it is a studio classic but takes on a life of it's own in concert, it often went 10 to 30 minutes depending on what they were feeling. Awesome band, I saw Mountain at least 10 times and Leslie solo almost as much. Always a great show, he never mailed in. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎶
Philly. 1974 along with argent and richie blackmores rainbow 🤘❤️
Yessss Britt!, your head movements went in sync with the guitar solo 4:06 to 4:10 , the devil is in the details.
Saw these guys New Year's Eve 1973. Insane.
I saw Mountain with Triumph in Indianapolis in the 80s while I was stationed at Grissom AFB. It was one of the greatest shows I ever saw because both bands had three members with the guitar player singing.
The drummer earned his paycheck.
Leslie West was a Force Of Nature! Everything he did was gold!
Can't go wrong with anything they did. Jim
I Don't Want to Discuss It (Live) · Delaney & Bonnie & Friends
MORE COW BELL!! You have southern rock, then you have hard southern rock like these guys. This was their greatest hit, but contrary to popular belief, they were not a one-hit wonder and seem to be underrated at times. This is one of those songs that as soon as you hear the intro you turn the volume up to 11.
I heard, when cowbells in songs were prevalent, that a cymbal’s sound didn’t come over AM radio as well. Thus, the cowbell started being used more. I never knew if that was true or not, but it seemed reasonable.
@@halweiss8671 AM radio was not in stereo so that might have something to do with it. As someone who has ran sound boards, it depends on the recording equipment is set up also. It was hard to set up each percussion piece, so one might override the other back then.
Except they were from Long Island, NY
@@sukie584 maybe the southern end of Long Island.
@@halweiss8671 😂😂
One of the best Jam ever, Im old enough to know when I bought the Flowers of Evil, when it was new
LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS
Ozzy Osbourne did a cover of this song.😎🎶🎸
But even more....Britt gets it!!!! Kudos!!!
Awesome
Lesie was literally " Mountain". Musicians said his pinkie was bigger than others thumbs.
An absolute banger of a song! Mountain was good band and most folks are suprised they're from Long Island, NY. This embodied a real soulful southern rock vibe! They captured it!
What a beautiful woman!!!
The beginnings of metal.
Somewhere Down That Crazy River you might find the Mississipi Queen ask Robbie Robertson ha ha
I can tell, you're a talented person...
One of the unanswered enigmatic questions of all time in the music world is which was bigger his voice or his hair?🤔🧐🤔
Damn you're 🔥 and your reaction was on point
Yes! I saw them play this live all those years ago. Made loud to be played loud!
I'm a huge fan of your Elvis Preskey reactions -- and now this!? Leslie West is one of the greatest rock guitarists and blues hard rock vocalists of them all!
He passed away. His name is Leslie West.
Saw Mountain in concert in '73, great concert. The Fat Man could really play !
You too cool! 😎
Leslie West was a larger than life performer. So fun to watch
Britt, please listen to the Mountain "Roll Over Beethoven" Live, there is really Mountain ( Leslie West) guitar playing.
I promise you you never have heard a Roll Over Beethoven like that ever before or after.
immortalised in the film vanishing point
I liked the chick on the motorcycle
This song is so important because of what it was in the time it was released. Revolutionary in it's day. And it's become an anthem for rockers around the world. One of the best cover's, I humbly believe, is done by Zakk Wylde (guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne). He sat in at little club with the house band and made a masterpiece. Eight minutes of Zakk taking you to church. Such an amazing guitar player (and a solid dude, too) ------> ruclips.net/video/mjKXtM79IWc/видео.html
The crowd would have been asked to sit quiet during the live recording session. Otherwise, you can bet there would have been some fancy shimmyin' and shakin' going on. 😁
Leslie West was a force of nature. RIP
Leslie West lost a ton of weight..He did a great performance of this song on the Dennis Miller show in the 90's
Now we need some Canned Heat to go with this!!!
Man I miss the music of my childhood.this kinda talent nolonger exsist
Leslie West😊 RIP
And he's from New Jersey.
Leslie West was a great player. Great feel, unreal tone, quite a wild guy too supposedly. World was a more interesting place when he was here. RIP.
I have the exact same pair of Sennheiser headphones...
Yo Britt, you are the cutest thing girl... Love ya...
Couple years too late to see him. He was a a big boy. Saw him live. He was great and louder than a fast car.
I was there in1970 at eight years of age . Your not too late to the party
Speaking of GRAND... you should try some Grand Funk Railroad.
Check out the gnarly but refined studio version..
The crowd musta been stoned outa their freakin minds to just sit there.
When I woke up from open heart surgery I thought of this song for a strange reason. When the surgeon came in I asked if he had played this song during surgery - he said yes
You're adorable !
breakin out the bass for this one🤓
It seems to me if you like this, you would like Black Betty by Ram Jam
Love your reactions britt, zakk wylde does an incredible version of this same song which is really worth a listen! Another great song I'd love to see you react to is "life without you "at the capital theater by Stevie ray Vaughan thank you ♥
Zack Wylde's version is 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Listen to Black Oak Arkansas and Jackle
Zombie audience. Loved your reaction.
