Important note about this process!!!! Make sure calipers and pads are fully installed BEFORE putting car into brake maintenance mode!!! If you are doing a brake service, then find out that the pads are worn enough to need replacing, put them back together temporarily. When engaging maintenance mode, the piston will run ALL of the way out till it hits the pads, THEN retract into the caliper. IF the pads/rotor are not in place (ie: caliper removed from the mounting bracket), the piston will move out and not stop till it literally falls out!
I tried doing this and it came up with a message that said parking brake malfunction. Not sure why I can’t get it to go into maintenance mode. Could the piston be broken? First time we tried it did come all the way out.
My 2015 fusion did the same thing. After the second attempt it went into the maintenance mode but still only opened the calipers about 2/3 of the way so had to crack the bleeder and manually screw the calipers in the remainder of the way.
This is the brake rotor/pad kit that I used for the rear: geni.us/c32M (AMAZON LINK) (ad) These are the FRONT brake rotors and pads that I installed a few weeks later: geni.us/Juso (AMAZON LINK) (ad) I've had no issues with them and they were extremely easy to install and came with everything that I needed for my Ford Fusion.
Thanks! Worked perfectly for me. For one caliper I had to use a pry bar to get it to start going back and then I could use my hands to push the piston. The first side I was just able to push the piston.
So sometimes when I’m driving my car it works just fine and then I’ll turn my car on after going somewhere and turn off my parking brake and while I’m driving it it feels like the parking brake is still on but it doesn’t show that my brake is on and it gets bad enough to the point when I get back home it’s smoking from the back tires like the brake was on the whole time. What do you think that is?
Yep, same issue. FF2019 Titanium Hybrid. I put the right axle on the jack and confirmed, the rear wheels spin with resistance. I wonder if it can be fixed with the steps in the video
Couldn’t get it to maintenance mode (mondeo 2015, keyless). Unwound manually placed it back on the disc and the old pads and additionally depressed the cylinder with screwdriver wedged between pad and the caliper. Did not feel like wanting to risk damaging the plastic electric motor case. After service just pumped the brake and lifted parking brake. No error lights or messages after service.
Hey I just changed my brake caliber without putting it in maintenance mode I didn't know. Know the light is flashing like in the video. Can I just follow these steps to get it off ?
I have a ford fusion with the key. I changed the breaks without knowing to put it in maintenance mode. Now the breaks are locked up. I did the process but it’s not working so I need to redo the entire process or did I break something?
You're supposed to do this before changing the brakes and compressing the piston. If they're locked up, then you may have damaged the brakes. Probably time to see a mechanic, or replace something further.
@@ReviewsAndHowTos I own a GM mechanic shop. Was doing a favor for a family member. We don’t work on fords at all so my guys didn’t think anything of it and changed the brakes. The repair went super simple. We have all of the tools. Thanks for your reply. I’ll try doing the correct process and taking all back apart and let you know. If not I’ll just order the electronics for it and replace them. But thanks for your help. The video is good
Yes. Rear pads. You'll likely damage your vehicle if you don't do this first. You'll still need to compress the caliper piston. This just allows it to be compressed.
@@C2cjay Yep. This will work. I did my own and had no issues. Some other vids on RUclips fail to mention this or tell you to compress without doing it, unfortunately.
Wait, so im a bit confused on this. After doing this, do you still need to use a caliper reset tool? Some people are saying it retracts automatically, and you dont have to use anything. Some people are saying you can literally push it in by hand, and others say you still need to use a reset tool. Thanks to anyone who replies to this as Ford wants to charge $400 to do the JUST the rear pads and rotors, so I'd rather just do it myself.
@ReviewsAndHowTos I saw some places recommended this cube-like reset tool that I guess spins the piston back into place, is that what you used or just a standard reset tool?
Do the same process as the people with the keys that’s the right way this video you made doesn’t show how to do shit
I disagree. But, here's your attention.
Thank you so much for this video. Other people don’t tell you that you need to pretty much do all the steps together.
I struggled with it the first time! That's why I included the text on the screen along with my verbal directions. Glad it helped!
The hardest part of the brake job is taking it in and out of maintenance mode. I had a heck of a time. Thanks for your help.
Glad it helped!
Thank You my Friend! Your process is PERFECT. Saved me about $525 doing back brake pads myself! ❤️
Great!
Jesus, I thought I had it bad as the dealer wanted to charge $400 for just the rear pads and rotors.
This video was a life saver. Ty! Thought I messed my car up with all the break lights and warnings going off! Cheers🎉
2019 ford fusion
Thank you very much,I really appreciated.
Great video my good lad, Im about to use your instructions to enable my cars maintenance mode it too has push button start.

If it falls out, will I be able to out back in
@wingdreamer59 I'm already at the point where I got the caliper off, the piston is not retracted enough, and I don't know what to do.
Thanks. Job done in 1.5hrs.
Knocked out my front brakes this evening!

NOT WORKING FOR ME.
My piston came all the way out. there is little springs and ball bearing on the ground. Deffinetly did not work for me
Zack, read my reply above for more info.
Is valable for the ford Europe
I have tried but it release parking break and keep giving a notification with beep. How to fix it ?
It should be releasing the brake along with a notification. Could you explain further?
Put it in mantnince mode fixed brakes now a malfunction code
Now this is the video that saved me from a massive headache! Thank you mate!

Once in Maintenance Mode, do you have to leave it in Accessary while replacing brake pads?
Doesn’t matter you can turn it off. Just has to be in accessory mode to take it in or out of maintenance mode
@@rathax1 Makes sense. Thank you. Awesome video!
@@rathax1 This is correct.
Thank you, very much. I was a bit reluctant, but your steps were perfect. 2019 Ford Fusion SE.
Glad it helped!
Thanks man ford tech here still a newbie but we’re learning
Glad it helped! RUclips is a great place to learn.
Is this the same for fusion hybrid or is that different step because of regen braking?
Doing brakes this weekend
Thank you 👍🇺🇸
Sweet! I'm doing my front brakes this weekend!
Clear and concise. Great video. Thanks
I didn't see this video before I started the brake job and now I can't get the piston to retract enough to get it back together. What do I do?😓
You should be able to put it in maintenance mode and then compress the piston. You'll likely still need a compressor tool to do so.

Thank you! Super helpful video. I'm a gm dealership tech and had to do a 4 wheel brake job on one of these for a customer who brought it to us.

Hey I just changed my brake caliber without putting it in maintenance mode I didn't know. Know the light is flashing like in the video. Can I just follow these steps to get it off ?
You may need to have it serviced by a mechanic. Compressing the piston without it being in maintenance mode can cause damage.
When you’re cycling thru the push start, is the brake button being pushed(activate) and or pulled (deactivate) the entire time?
Yes, you'll have to keep pulling/pushing it depending on if you're deactivating or resetting the maintenance mode.
What if I changed the rear pads without putting it in maintenance mode already? Do I need to cycle it? Whoops
If you compressed the caliper piston without it being in maintenance mode, then you may have caused damage.

I have a problem my 2016 f-150 won’t start and it just says check brake system but I did everything you said?and it tries to crack up but it doesn’t
The only thing this does is disengage the system. You'll still need to compress the piston.
@@ReviewsAndHowTos I appreciate you
Thanks my guy! Saved me a headache
Glad it helped!
I've tried a million times and that won't work
It works
What do you mean cycle the push button?
Push it, and then within five seconds push it again.
Do you have yo put on neutral?
No.
@RUclipsrDude this is only for rear brakes correct
This is to change the brake pads right ?
Yes. Rear pads. You'll likely damage your vehicle if you don't do this first. You'll still need to compress the caliper piston. This just allows it to be compressed.
