You’re reviews are a breath of fresh air for the people who go all in to buy these sound boxes. Plus you have by far the best name for a synth channel on RUclips.
Hey thanks a lot! So many reviews for me are overly technical, and I'm not really that technical a musician - so I try just. Go from that angle. My name is both a blessing and a curse haha. It means I will never get anything but synth video traffic!!
Great video-as always. But dude, when you dropped that ZX Spectrum reference I was so unexpectedly and instantly thrown back to those days and remembered those rubbery keys! 👾 Nice throwback, thanks 🙌🏻
I love the Spectrum! It was a computer my granda had, while I used the C64 as a kid. I keep thinking about picking one up to do musical things with at some point... but I have so many projects on the go at the moment that it would be overkill.
@@StephenMcLeod No it was good! But I probably won't buy it yet. I'm still paying with the Model D I purchased after watching your Behringer comparison video!
So so tempted by this device, looks like a great way to get into modular although I think i should steer clear. As soon as I start getting into modular I will have no chance at saving for a house 😆Awesome video as usual mate
The Mavis seems like a lil beast man, such a great track to demo this with at the end!! And I love they included green cables and dust cover!! I wish every synth I have came with a dust cover like that, geeeeshzzz!! 😲🐀
All we need now is for them to produce a companion device called SYNTHIA and what a pair made in heaven - grab Mavis and Synthia and let's rock ! Aimed at the ballroom dancing fraternity and their hook could be - " Sequencer covered in sequins,Sir/Madam ? " I'm afraid to say i am from a wee humble background and built a ZX81 'back in the day' so to speak and Spectrums were for the bourgeoisie and i dreamt of owning a Sinclair C5 also but sadly it wasn't to be. Enjoyed the demo gig at the end ( was it titled " I'm in the Moog for love,Mavis " ) ( perhaps not ) but you've made it work nicely and you were so gentle with Mavis it conduces to a deep and meaningful evolving friendship which is music to our ears. Not sure about ' bang for buck ' and i'm drooling over the Roland SH-01A just now with 18% reduction on Amazon it's £328 english pinds - i may have to sell my vinyl collection of Des O'Connor's greatest hits to fund it.We'll see.Cake tare.
@@StephenMcLeod Yes i know - perhaps we could persuade youtube to enable us to register a limit on how many synth ads or youtubes on syths we can watch per week/month/year/lifetime ? At the moment i'm looking at multi track recorders and every time i look at the comments/reviews someone says ' but the X197CP blah blah has better preamps,a built in cigar lighter etc etc ' ....so then i start looking at cigar lighters and before you know it - it's up the wooden hill to Bedford time ! Put my wireless headphones on and did the washing up from breakfast listening to the demo and it's quite hairy - it's growing on me .Working my way through the world tour videos and having a ball !
Glad to see you’re getting free gear! But did you have to calibrate the pitch? I bought a Moog werkstatt and it required calibration for the tuning to hold across octaves.
Hey! I didn't have to calibrate it out of the box, but there are trimmer pots for a couple of sections to let you calibrate it easily if you need to :)
Putting together such an entertaining, heartwarmignly Scottish-sounding and as usual very personal review after distracting events happening proves you can focus on the meaningful things in life 👍 Thanks for this video, lad. In many ways Moog's Mavis reminds me of my recently acquired Behringer CRAVE which I'd also recommend for synth novices and starters in modular. Lots of patching fun included 😉 Did you actually get your hands on one of those yourself yet? If not, don't miss out on CRAVing!
@@StephenMcLeod I’m wondering if people buy an decide they don’t use it may as well sell it.. I’ve got my first hardware which is a Volca sample. Even though I’ve upgraded, there not worth selling on the money you get.
Cheers! As a standalone only synth it seems pricey, but if considered within the modular world it suddenly seems like a bargain. Depends what you are after!!

I appreciate you showing its physical size. It’s irrelevant really, but I was surprised by the size of the micro freak. I’m guessing it’s an American team that thought of the name. Mavis was the feeble negative old lady on coronation street. I’m a little put off by the fact it’s a jigsaw. I can’t justify buying anymore instruments but I’m definitely going to keep my eye on the used market. If non turn up after two years . I’m looking forward to your long term opinions of Mave.
the MicroFreak is definitely a different dimension to what I expected as well! I love the keyboard on it though. It's such a cool thing as a controller.
@@StephenMcLeod yeah the keyboard is genius. But I’m not a pianist. Just didn’t realise how small the whole thing is. Which is good as takes up less space. They all seem to put something together at similar price. This is going to do well because of name. Did you get all the free apps Moog gave away during lockdown.
I recently found your channel and have been enjoying your content even the longer video on production lessons. First Mavis video I’ve watched and it was very good video and addressed a lot of the reasons one would want this synth. A honest take on drawbacks or things to think about and nice thoughts on the value. Mavis is $469 CDN, with a power supply, cover and a built in keyboard. Seems great for an entry level Moog. Besides everyone either is or will be making these mini synths. Won’t they? 🤓
For the price it makes sense to me for folks who want an affordable kind of entry into the world of modular, or the world of Moog... and is probably a sensible business decision to have some lower priced options to combat Behringer dominance.
Good question. I must confess that I don't know enough about the East Beast to comment there. I prefer the Moog design, but that's not really here or there...
