I think Dwade fits the bill for this conversation. Sure, he went 5th in a draft class with LeBron, Carmelo, and Bosh, but who was really looking at him before he balled out in the tournament when he was at Marquette? And even though he went 5th overall, I don't think anyone thought he would be fighting for best player in the league against a prime LeBron and Kobe. There were even times when he looked better than them. Dwade was definitely a case of a person working really hard and as a result becoming great.

Lebron's stats in the 2014 finals were guady but advance analytics show that most of his numbers were obtained in "garbage" time when Spurs were up by 15 or more. He also has much lower stats whenever Kawhi guarded him so yes Kawhi did contain him. When the game was within 15 points or less, Kawhi outplayed Lebron in Games 3-5 when Pop "unleashed" Kawhi. So he truly deserved the MVP cause no one else on the Spurs team could have guarded Lebron the way he did and that was key to shutting down Miami.

Kawaii was raw when he first came into the league but in no way was this a total suprise. He wasnt trash. As a rookie he was delegated to mainly defense and corner threes but he was early in his career when the spurs ran a pick and roll/ motion offense. Around year 2 or 3 spurs fans could see he was goin to develop into a special player because of his build and his progression. He stood out as a spur cause his long and athletic build was something the spurs rarely had in that era. Spurs teams consisted of skilled and intelligent players with system oriented offense by pop and you could tell Kawaii was pure athlete. That along with his personality type matched well with the spurs identity and abilty to develop players. It wasntvlong before spurs fans realized that he was goin to develop into a special player. It wasnt a crazy suprise revelation like skip makes itbout to be. He acts like the truth just cause he thinks everyone is ignorant to the spurs but im a lifelong spurs fan from Texas an skip is always flavoring his arguments with bias. And chris and shannon are spot on about his role, his 3 point efficiency, and what was asked of him early in his career and what transpired once he was given more then a piece of the offense.

Now that kawhi is challenging LeBron in the western conference skip has to pick which of the two he's going to hate on.
