The Altar of Chrysolite.
Chrysolite is another name for the gemstone, Peridot. Peridot can be found within meteorites from outer space, and is seafoam/cosmic green in color. A small and clever detail by H.P. Lovecraft.
thanks for the clarification.
@@goncaloferreira6429 You're welcome!
God this man was such a good writer
I see a lot of George R R Martin’s inspiration from Lovecraft pulled specifically from this wonderful story.
Sarnath sounds like Bravos pretty much
By far my favourite Lovecraft story. It is beautiful, haunting and whispers of a greater narrative.
Did the fish that was served to the king and his court turn them into Ibians?...
that was a collection of words I never thought I'd utter
So far this is my favorite story I have heard in my initial Lovecraft binge. The universe he created is by far phenomenal and mirrors the timeless fate of nations and kingdoms that go against divine authority and ultimately seal their own fates. The "Arabian Nights" influence in this tale is fantastic and based on Lovecraft's gripping descriptions, it is clear to see how the text had a deep impact on his work.
I think I’ll end my Horrorbabble evening drifting off to sleep with a Dream cycle story. Thank you Ian.
You know you've made it as a society when you can be "derided by dancers and lutanists".
Lovecraft is amazing!
A society built entirely on *ROYALLY PISSING OFF A GOD* cannot last forever.
Also, am I the only person who feels bad for the beings of Ib? They were slaughtered just because the people of Mnar thought they were icky. I'm glad they got some justice in the end.
Oddly it lasted a 1000 years, longer than almost all realms known to exist. Only the Roman Empire and perhaps a few non-European civilizations (of which I’m not well versed in their history) lasted longer. Pretty good run I’d say.
@@heathenpride7931 Yeah, a pretty good run until *BOKRUG FINALLY DECIDED TO WRECK THEIR SHIT.* Then it was wiped off the map. So I believe my point of "don't piss off a God" stands.
@@mongothecouldntcareless1353 BOKRUG ACKBAR!
Can see where RR Martin got his ideas from.
icky creatures deserve to die
This is likely the best RUclips channel.
Or is it ?
I completely agree with you
I like that you kept it open, just in case another comes along. Rhetorically brilliant.
Yes. Other horror channels try to create horror by being dramatic with the reading. This channel is perfect.
I put these stories on to go to sleep to. The most beautiful voice.
This is a great story and teaches many lessons. I always like to read and listen to it.
As always, your narration is amazing!
Its been so long since I've read this , I'd forgotten it...TY IAN !! YOU'RE SO ENJOYABLE.😸👍
Wonderful tale and flawlessly narrated as always. Thank you very much!
This is some prime Dunsanian storytelling.
I've read this a couple of times before, but only now I noticed this bit: "On a pair of golden crouching lions rested the throne, many steps above the gleaming floor. And it was wrought of one piece of ivory, though no man lives who knows whence so vast a piece could have come." Compare it with this bit from Dunsany's Idle Days on the Yann: "...but as I came to the outer wall of the city I suddenly saw in it a huge ivory gate. For a while I paused and admired it, then I came nearer and perceived the dreadful truth. The gate was carved out of one solid piece!"
I read this many years ago. An excellent reading as always!
Always excellently done
Revisiting the dream cycle and what better way than via Horrorbabble!
Keep up the good work fella and stay safe. Would love an audio adaptation of these stories like you’ve been doing with some of your other older readings.
Wonderful.
Wholeness and balanced vibrations thanks for the upload
The Thuum'ha of Ib are now enemies you can fight in the Isle of Siptah DLC for Conan Exiles.
Yay and WE love you!!
There is a line in the song of my countryman: "...don't grab from other's, it is damned!"
Sarnath. At ib ....classic history repeating itself ha !
The moon was gibbous. Brilliant
Just discovered this channel! I love classic horror! Subscribed!
Thank you kind sir!
Restyn Martin welcome !!
@@HorrorBabble blessings of akatosh upon ye!
Amazing!
Have given/read this story to several people over the years. They all thought they had heard it before or a story like it. Someone thought it was from that scary book the bible. I
It is as if lovecraft was able to tap into poetry that was allways there.
Oh, oh oh! OH!
Not another lizard job 🤔😂
I'm playing a dnd story where their get to destination has been sarnath but they ran into some Migo on a shipwreck.
❤🔥
These type of fantasy setting for small core ideas are always just a long list of funky names for environs. Sort of lame but I always like the foreboding horror of Lovecraft and all he inspired.
A classical tale warning against the hubrys of mankind, as well as denoucing several of our flaws, violence, racism.
the 50 millions inhabitants mentioned at the end matches the over the top feel of the tale but otherwise sounds ridiculous.
Great narration as always.
Thanks for listening!
Thra? Are there skesis or gelfling visiting the city?
🍯
6:47 Did he just say Thra?
Skeksis do look like Lovecraftian penguins...
Pretty sure he said Thraa.
Thousandth! 😂
Seriously, who the fuck comes on here and dislikes any of these videos?! Utter buffoonery. I mean honestly, there are so many people putting their book readings on here and not one other person I’ve heard puts any effort into mixing and mastering the unwanted frequencies out of their recordings. SMH 🤦♂️
