My question at 57:03 made the cut! Thanks, Louis and Justin! Small correction, the current version of Standout's CF3 (14 and 16mm) uses 8mm cells. I've confirmed that with Lu over there. So, still not sure what the "narrow cell" is denoting, but there is definitely a unique feel to it. However, I'm pretty sure you're right about the Ballista but haven't gotten it confirmed. I do know Phantom Pickleball uses 6mm cells in some of their paddles. Super curious if any others pop on your guys' radar. I think it's an area ripe for experimentation and would love to see Mark Pickleball dabble into it!

A fun new thought experiment floating around the other podcasts/pro interviews that seems to be gaining traction is capping power (MPH ceiling), but uncapping spin.
It seems like the converging opinion being arrived at is that while extra power can be dangerous with less skill, more spin actually raises the skill ceiling of the sport with no impact on injury risk. Daescu specifically mentioned in an interview that extra spin is just another word for more options, and the common opinion that dink battles in doubles are boring to watch as a spectator can be solved by giving players more options with shot selection by giving access to skill-based shot making via access to spin. At the end of the day, it seems like a total win win - increased skill ceiling and a better public viewership relationship.
Curious if you guys want to touch on that subject in your next podcast!

Justin, do you design the paddles to exploit certain facets of the game? For example, You said the return of serve is a cheat code, so how would you design a paddle to accentuate that?
Thinking out loud here, but if you could cram a bunch of power into a standard shape preserving maneuverability, wouldn’t that be the way to exploit this?

I just got the j2k a couple of weeks ago. Loving it.
Put 3g in the MIDDLE of the throats (at each side). Love it more.
Then raised the weights to the top of the throats, and it "feels" Much "heavier".
So probably this small adjustment have raised the balanse point and the swing weight!
I don't have any way to test the numbers.
So could you do this experiment and tell us how much those number will change?

gk … I have found a good way to do initial weight addition experimentation is to use the pre-cut 3g strips and duct tape. Don’t peel off the 3g strip backing, cut duct tape strips a little longer than the 3g strips and tape the 3g strips to edge guard. You can even move them around in a play session. I’ve done this for a while, and had always peeled off 3 gram strip backing and stuck them to paddle once I had settled on permanent location. I go by how that paddle feels and plays … so don’t need things like exact swing weight.
Interestingly … at the 3-4 week mark with new Apollo, I realized I have never gone back and glued them down permanently. It occurs to me I don’t need to. With the duct tape, and making sure to press down around the edges of the 3g strips, they don’t budge. (not even sure if a little movement might be an advantage … think ProKennex tennis racquets with their moving beads ;). I use black duct tape on the black edge guard, so don’t even notice it.
btw … none of it matters without an overgrip. Sorry … was that out loud … I keep hitting players paddles for a few minutes in open play, and I can’t get that greasy slimefest out of my hand fast enough. I won’t even try a paddle anymore with a Hesacore grip … SO WRONG. ;)
Edit: I find it helpful to know where the balance point is so you can place weight from that point depending on your goal (below balance point to not add to swing weight, above to add to swing weight). I use a thin dowel rod and just push from handle end and mark place with painters tape where paddle toppled forward.
Good luck with your experimentations … we are all mad paddle scientists now.

Q: instead of cores being cut out of huge sheets, I think I’ve heard electrum forms their cores so no cut edges. Could doing this allow a company to either have smaller cells in the sweet spot and wider cells around the edges or something like firmer edges and softer sweet spot (or vice versa)? Maybe even one type of PP in the sweet spot and another type around the edges? How far can this be taken?

USAP's new testing was initially called the "BS" test- which of course, stands for "Ball Speed" test. Realizing, 3 months later, that the new Proton "Nuk'em" powered by a small fission reactor in the paddle might not pass anymore, they allowed content creators to directly e-mail them with suggestions on which paddles should be legal, with the exception of Pickleball Pursuit- the official reason being "they're not cool enough." USAP received feedback from dozens of notable content creators like "Blane Abirtwil", "Tennisball Shill" and "Fry-Day Pickleball." Following the receipt of feedback from thousands of podcasters, brand ambassadors, and definitely not AI generated ads, USAPA approved the Zane Navatil Pro-XR, the Six Zero Triple Black Diamond, Friday Pickleball paddles and any paddle purchased on Temu. Commenting on the anticipated success of the new rules, USAP announced "random rule changes based on the whims of content creators are fun, so expect to see more of them....or don't, ooooh", as a puff of smoke burst from the podium.
